Did my insurance company give me a BS answer regarding a rate increase?

I recently received my renewal notice in the mail for my auto insurance policy. The premium (for the entire year) increased by almost $100. I called my insurance company to find out why, and my BS detector is going off. [more inside]

Is there a connection between Maryland and the Autobots?

I feel like I keep seeing the Transformers logo every time I go to Maryland. It's on people's bumpers, T-shirts, etc. Is this just confirmation bias, or is there some significance to this logo that is somehow connected to the state of Maryland? Is there a similar logo used for something that's local to MD?

Family-friendly northern DC dining?

A friend and his family are driving from North Carolina to Washington, DC. I'm going to drive down from Baltimore to meet them for dinner on Friday evening, but I hate going into central DC, so we've agreed to meet in a more northerly region: perhaps Bethesda, Silver Spring or College Park. Unfortunately I'm not too familiar with that area, so AskMe, where should we have dinner? It'll be a party of four adults and three small children at about eight-ish on a Friday night. It should be someplace we can relax and have a leisurely conversation. Easy driving and parking is important. Thanks for the suggestions!

Statute of limitations is up on a medical product-liability lawsuit?

Hi all, When I was 10, I took stomach drug called Propulcid, which gave me permanent Epilepsy. I am now 26 and want to sue the makers, but the statute of limitations in Maryland ended at age 21 (I'm 26 now). I want to sue, but given these limitations, no contingency-based lawyer will take my case. What can I do? Thanks!

Aluminum wiring! Asbestos! Termites! Are they a big deal? What to do?

First-time homebuyers under contract for a 60-year-old house-- how serious/expensive are these problems: aluminum wiring, friable asbestos insulation, termites, undisclosed window leak causing water damage? Along with original plumbing and an old HVAC, is this a pretty standard situation that falls under the umbrella of "all houses are going to have some problems, no house is perfect" and is this the kind of stuff they mean when they say you'll be spending 1%-ish of your home value on this kind of stuff every year? Or are these costs and issues on the high side, and this is probably on top of another 1%-ish every year on other repairs and maintenance? Help us put this in perspective! (We need to decide whether to give the sellers' relocation company the right to cancel our contract by requesting repairs. And we need to figure out what we should fix and how much it'll cost if we go ahead and buy the house without repairs.) [more inside]

Alternative newspaper history

I am interested in speaking with people involved with the underground newspaper Dragonseed (or Dragon Seed), published in Baltimore and/or Timonium, MD, around 1972-1973. (No, I am not looking for folks involved with Dragonseed Harry.) Most of the contributors used only first names or pseudonyms. What would be the best way to get the word out about this? I was thinking about an ad in the City Paper, but I'm not sure people actually read ads like that.

Old Country Wedding in the New World

Looking for a rustic wedding venue in the DC/Virginia/MD (and potentially WV) region where the soon-to-be Mrs. Oneironaut and I can take over for the whole weekend, roast whole lambs, have a county fair atmosphere, and have the music and dancing go all night. We want to be able to control the space, have a house and potentially a few cabins available, and be within 30 minutes of a town with hotels. Any leads appreciated! And, this question is similar to this one, but we're anticipating more like 150 people, and don't need to be within an hour of the airport.

Seeking clinic and urgent care recommendations in southern Baltimore suburbs

Just moved to Baltimore (working in Columbia), haven't had time to unpack let alone find a new PCP, and wouldn't you know it, i'm sick. Does anyone have any recommendations for a drop-in clinic or urgent care facility in the Laurel-Ellicott City-Columbia area that (a) won't charge ER rates and (b) has decent staff? I found several when I googled, but have no way to evaluate them other than google recommendations. Bonus points if you can ALSO recommend other good practitioners (I need a primary care physician, an endocrinologist and a dermatologist) in that area or the south side of Baltimore for when I have time to set up appointments for initial visits.

What was this book about Maryland?

At the end of August I heard an author being interviewed on the Baltimore NPR about her book on the history of Maryland. I was in the car and couldn't write down her name or the name of the book, and I can't seem to find it listed on Amazon. Does anyone know what this book might be? In the part I heard she was talking about Maryland's history as a Catholic/Royalist haven, and the tensions this caused with neighboring Virginia. Inspired by this post on the blue.
