My mother is under the impression that a wedding ring (ie the band that you add in addition to the engagement ring) is the only way to "consummate the marriage in the eyes of God" ... where is she getting this from? I've never heard such a thing. [more inside]

Can you buy a girlfriend a ring without asking her to marry you, when the relationship is already going on for 5 years? Not that I don't want to marry her, but we're just not there yet.
