What does a marketing director do?

My firm is trying to decide whether to hire a marketing/sales director. I have been tasked with gathering information about marketing and sales in general and presenting that information to the team, so that we can make a decision. So, what are the key responsibilities and duties of a marketing/sales director? What will such a person bring to our team? What's a good way to go about finding the right person for the position? What qualities should we look for in the hiring process? I am particularly interested in service marketing, for small consulting firms. My firm has about 100 employees, with several branch offices. We provide environmental consulting services to government agencies and private industry. Currently, our technical project managers develop clients and close sales, and most people within the firm think of these activities as being all that marketing and sales encompass. Many people are wary of hiring non-technical people in marketing and sales, because they are afraid of the stereotypical phony used car salesman types. Bonus points for helping me figure out ways to move past these fears and stereotypes.

Looking for quality Executive Recruiters in Atlanta...

Can you help me find a high-quality Headhunter/executive recruiter in Atlanta? Been disappointed with the two that I have contacted to date. Looking for a Marketing Director level job in Atlanta, and hoping that there are folks on AskMeFi who may have had experience with specific executive recruiters/organizations in Atlanta.

The two that I have contacted thus far have been disappointing, with few questions about what I am looking for and little more than (based on conversations) a cursory glance at my resume.

Likewise, recommendations/suggestions I've received have been for jobs that are not appropriate for me (due to either function, company type, salary, or a combination of the three).

Looking for someone who understands the Atlanta professional job market and the type of position I am looking for.

Thanks!
