How can I handle a web designer working for our competitors?

I'd like to hire a web design and marketing company that is specialized in my industry. They provide the best product out there -- great sites, great logos, great marketing with super industry knowledge. I noticed that our #1 competitor in the local area has a website "under construction" and a new site coming soon from this same marketing company. How can I handle this situation? [more inside]

Confusing website - what do they want?

Last week I saw an ad for what appeared to be a search engine in the London Evening Standard. I presumed it was viral marketing as the ad was pretty opaque - but the website doesn't seem to be advertising anything or indeed make sense. What's going on? [more inside]

Interview driving traffic to a website?

I have a two part question. I've just interviewed well known performer who has just released his first solo CD. He owns all of the rights to the lyrics and music, and his own company published the CD. A radio station I'm associated with plans to put the interview online, as well as broadcast it within the week. If the musician is OK with me putting it on my own website, how might it drive traffic to his site and my site? And is there anything extra I can to make it attract listeners and drive that traffic? How do I convince our marketing department that pop-ups are a bad idea?

The marketing department wants to put a pop-up on our company website to ask people how they found their way there. I think this will alienate users. Can you point me towards any evidence, research, or articles that suggest this is the case?

Community Media Website Design

Suggest a model for a money-making, or at least self-sufficient, website dedicated to a region or small city something like "Mayberry Online." Probably advertising driven, dedicated to news, events, listings, but with active forums for 'consumer gripes,' local politics, advice columns, restaurant reviews, arts, sports, health, pets & wildlife. Think 'city paper' or alternative press but online, with an active Craigslist component. Any thing like that out there? Suggestions on website design/creation/start-up consultants would be an added bonus. Links please to worthy existing sites that fit the bill. And, TIA

Marketing a great website before it's copied

Recently I've thought of a great idea for a website which I'm planning on developing soon. I believe the site has the potential of something like YouTube or Facebook. Due to my paranoia and low budget, I've decided to develop the site myself. I believe no one has the capacity or resources to copy the site for at least a fortnight. Due to the low budget Im having to resort to spreading the word over the net. Unfortunetly I cannot reveal what the site is about :( I was just wondering if anyone knows of any descent sites or forums that are pretty general, where I could post my idea? so i can reach as many people as possible within a fortnight. P.S. Please don't say Youtube or Facebook... lol

Where can I advertise an improv comedy show?

My improv troupe is looking for ways to publicize our shows, beyond the word-of-mouth and email lists we've been working with so far. As part of this effort, I'm looking for websites with listings and schedules for comedy shows--particularly improv comedy--in the Los Angeles area. Specifically, of course, I'm looking for sites that allow you to post your own listing, or submit it for posting. Any suggestions?
