Coffee meeting with a potential employer... the aftermath?

Following a coffee meeting with a potential employer at a major company, I've been asked to complete a research proposal. I've also been asked to submit a vendor registration and will be filing a nondisclosure agreement. If the proposal goes through, it looks as though I'll be completing this project through the company's market research department, but not necessarily as an employee. I'm just wondering if any others have had a similar experience, and if it's a common pre-hiring process. [more inside]

How to track the sources a website pulls news from?

I'm wondering if anyone could suggest a tool or website that allows me to see a list of sites that a particular website is pulling news from. I know I can do this manually by looking at articles and noting the sites that are sourced, but I'm wondering if there is an easier way to do it. Any ideas? Thanks, - Michael

You’re a market researcher. What do you do all day?

How do you market researchers do what you do? I’m curious about the profession and I’d like some information on how researchers actually spend time. Special projects at my design service firm often include an element of conjecture about potential audience. When we work on projects that might be legitimately useful or tool-like, I’d like to introduce some rigor into our process and know better when to think about hiring a contractor or outside vendor for research. Please help me research consumer demographics.

I'm looking to research consumer demographics for a couple of specific businesses. For instance, Who goes to Disney World or Cirque du Soleil (age, race, income, city/state of origin, etc.)? I realize this is pretty basic stuff, but it is not anything I've done before and I'm coming up empty. [more inside]

How do I market what my small company does?

I own a very small company, and I feel that my product is the best in its category. If I can just get my message to the masses, my company will be a success (otherwise I'll have to go back to work for "the man"). What's the best way to ge the message out? I realize that everyone is advertising-averse, and I don't want to consider anything that might irritate people.
