My boyfriend and I are madly in love. We want to spend the rest of our lives together. He is my best friend, my lover, my confidant, my conscience, and a continuous source of strength and love. The problem is that he is leaving for the Marines in August and I have been seriously questioning my ability to survive his enlistment term. I am absolutely terrified of what is to come. I feel as though there is no possible way I can survive being away from him for so long. How do I find the emotional strength to deal with his absence?

Military Brat Filter: Explain a military brat childhood to someone who grew up in a touchy-feely liberal household that never moved once. I’m looking for either long-form articles or personal stories. How often did you move? What were the things you learned? Did you have coping mechanisms? What were the bases like? How has it affected you as an adult?

How do I help my little brother get out of the Marines?
My little brother (well, not so little anymore) recently graduated from Marines' boot camp and is now in infantry training (I think, I'm woefully ignorant of military terminology). He recently expressed to me online that he's basically had enough with the Marines and wants to go home. Is there any way he can do that simply and legally? Would he have to get a dishonorable discharge. Seriously, I know nothing about the military having come from a long line of cowards. Can he just leave or is there some special process? Is there some kind of hotline or something he can call to be counseled on this stuff?

I have a (self-described) Republican, Bush-loving friend whom I've known for about 13 years now, who's willingly signed up for the Marines and
wants to be stationed in Iraq. He leaves for basic training next weekend.

My brother is seriously considering enlisting in either the Navy or the Marines. Can anyone point me to good, fairly unbiased sources for the information he needs to make his decision? I’ve read the older posts, but found nothing dead on point.
