What's the best way to experience Sydney's Mardi Gras parade on March 5th? When does the parade start, where should I watch it from, and what associated events are worth going to?

Coming down the New Orleans for Mardi Gras and was looking for recommendations on the best option for a group of 6-8+ on where to stay. I've been to Mardi Gras in the past, but always stayed local with friends - while this is clearly an optimal/cheaper option, it's not available to me for the coming Carnival season.

I'm marching in a Mardi Gras parade for the first time and I'm a bit nervous. If you've ever been in a parade I'd appreciate some advice and anecdotes!

I'm going to New Orleans in a couple of weeks, and I'm excited to get to attend the
2010 Krewe du Vieux parade - I hear it's pretty crazy and that spectators really get into it with costumes, etc.
Have you ever been? What's it like? Do people really dress up?
Thanks!

Speaking of New Orleans, I am going to Mardi Gras with some friends but would like some off-the-beaten-path suggestions for things to do. Stuff like jazz, cemeteries, unique cuisine, etc. (with no major budgetary concerns).
From my memory of MG 2000, Bourbon Street gets pretty old pretty quickly.
