I’ve just signed up to run a marathon with 5,000ft of ascent in February. I’m excited! If you’re an experienced hill runner, what tips and tricks can you short-cut me to, to help make this step-up to happy hill marathoner go smoothly? [more inside]
How do I maintain energy, steam, inspiration, and enthusiasm while undertaking a LONG project-- writing a nonfiction book? I've been at it for 4 months already, and I've got at least another month of proposal writing, and then will have many months of book writing. It's a marathon, and I've never done a marathon. I'm running the Reykjavik Marathon next month. I'm a proper runner, but slow and steady. I'm looking to do the mara in under 6 hours. Have you experienced the Reykjavik Marathon (recently) as a spectator or runner and do you have specific knowledge as to whether they pack up the food stations early or run out of the powerade and bananas they say they supply. Runners can provide a pack for themselves to be available at 20k and 30k but will this just get thrown away before I get to it? [more inside]
I just started treadmill running for the first time in my life about 3 months ago. I've had no plan in mind and my schedule and progress has been fairly random. Running 3-ish miles 2-3 nights a week. The other night after work I ran 7 miles and now I'm wondering how to train for a half marathon. [more inside]
Are there any tricks to getting a bib transfer into the Marine Corps Marathon? [more inside]
I am a lifelong runner in my early 40s who’s having trouble getting to the next level. I have a pair of friends who are the same age as me, have been running as long as I have, and train about as much as I do, but they are much faster. One thing I’ve noticed from their Strava files is that they’re able to sustain a much higher HR for longer amounts of time than I can. [more inside]
I've just received a group email from a relative telling us that she is pulling out of the London Marathon on Saturday due to injury. [more inside]

Sometime during the mid or late 1980s, I remember my parents discussing a news report of a marathon run held in Australia during the height of summer. One runner, the focus of the report, had apparently run so long (without rehydrating? maintaining electrolyte balance? resting?) that their leg muscles denatured or "cooked" and parts of leg needed to be surgically removed. Is this real? Can anyone guide me to a news report or similar evidence? Case study? Exhibit of medical curios?
Is there a route alongside the San Francisco marathon I could take that would allow me to get back to the designated viewing locations? Bikes are not allowed in the race of course, but I'd like to know if anyone else has tried to follow the race and support a participant by riding ahead and cheering them on at each viewing location. I have two more long runs before the actual race in March and I'd like to break in everything I plan to wear/take in the next week or so. Can you MeFi runners suggest some good gear? List of what I think I need inside. [more inside]
I have a backyard that has been troubled ever since we moved in. It was clear at that time that lawn of some sort was not doing very well. We tried adding new good soil and starting grass from seed that supposedly was the right kind for our area and the fact that the back gets little direct sunlight. [more inside]
I just finished my 9+1 to get entry to next year's NYC marathon. If I had time to do one thing in addition to my running program, what should I add to my training? [more inside]
The organizers of this Sunday's NYC Marathon have a pretty shitty map; is there a better one available? I'm hoping for something overlaid on Google Maps or some such equivalent. Bonus question: how do I gauge what time the elite runners would be running by a given spot?
I currently use Runkeeper on my iPhone to log runs and races (mostly 10k’s). Next year I’m doing a half-marathon and marathon. Is it worth getting a GPS watch & heart rate monitor? (Considering the Garmin 220 or 620.) I’m thinking about the convenience/functionality of a watch versus a phone, and the training benefits of a HRM. I’d rather not get another device unless it’s a marked improvement.
Marathon runners, what are some ways that you love your friends and family to show you support? My friend is running a marathon, and as a non-runner, I would love some ideas to cheer him on during, or congratulate him at the end. [more inside]
I am planning on running a marathon sometime between spring 2015 and August 2016 with lots of flexibility in time frame. I need to choose a marathon and it must be ithin driving distance of Seattle. This will be my first marathon so I do want some support - I want a timing chip - and I want a photographer. I'm not sure what else I want in terms of crowds, etc. If you have experience with marathons in this area that you can share, please do.
I saw my sports therapist doctor who is a respected doctor in his field. i told him that i wanted to run a marathon someday but he said that marathons are unsafe for hearts/muscles/bones and encouraged me to stick to shorter races. He also said 12-20 miles a week is the sweet spot for running and anything over that loses health benefits. he said he wrote a paper on it. Does anyone on this site who has experience in sports medicine know what race is the upper limit for avoiding undue health risks? [more inside]
I'm registered for the Chicago Marathon this October (in 11 weeks) . It'll be my first race running this far. I also bruised the hell out of my heel 2 weeks ago. Now that I can run again, how do I adjust my training plan? [more inside]

2 years ago my husband got all huffy and insulted that I hadn't seen all the James Bond movies and instated "Bondathon" where we watched one Bond movie, in order, every sunday every week until we got through them all. He had it all timed out so that the final week coincided with the release of Skyfall. I may not have liked all the movies (Oh my god, "You Only Live Twice" is utter crap!) but I really liked the experience otherwise. Give me some suggestions for other movie -athons that we can have. I'm running my first marathon in a few months and need your advices! [more inside]
I would never personally actually bandit a marathon (to bandit is to run a race without having paid the fee to register). Please no comments on whether it's good, bad, or immoral. But for curiosity sake, according to this article in the wall street journal, it's not illegal at all. And if it's not illegal, how can the "bandit catchers" force a bandit off the course? Are there really that many bandits at most marathons? What if a bandit only ran from mile 2 to mile 24? I find everything about this topic interesting. Experiences, and tips are appreciated.
I want to run my first marathon. I live in Africa. Where on this content can I find a marathon well-suited to a decent novice runner? [more inside]
My GF is running her first-ever marathon next weekend in Philadelphia. I'm looking for creative or interesting suggestions for either a gift or something I can do that she might like (beyond flowers at the finish and a massage, both of which are a done deal). Any runners out there have a specific suggestion--maybe something sweet or thoughtful that was done for you after you finished? Thanks!

I am running a fall marathon with a charity bib. I am about 50% of the way to my goal, but my husband is upset that I've been using social media to raise money. My partner is in a position of power at a large corporation, and some of his colleagues are personal friends of mine. He thinks that it comes off as tacky if I try to raise money as a general ask to my (more than a thousand) Facebook friends because he thinks it reflects badly on him. [more inside]

I have to be in Paris for an academic conference on May 31 to June 1st. On June 2nd, there's a marathon in Sauternes, which appears to be about 6-7 hours south-west of Paris by car. My question is (1) having never been to France, and never traveled around Europe except by train and since college, can I get from Paris to Sauternes in time to run the race at 8:30am the next morning realistically? And (2) can you help me logistically plan this ahead of time so that it minimizes risk of getting lost, missing the race, and spending a lot of money? I will be flying out of Paris, fyi, and haven't booked any flights yet.
Help me be ok with not giving 100% to running every day. [more inside]

Asking for a friend: "Our flight leaves from JFK at 5:55 PM. We're currently in Northern New Jersey, near Morristown. My father has offered to drive us to the airport, but we're concerned about whether this will be physically/emotionally possible due to the marathon. Our plan was to head south and take the Verrazano Bridge. Will this take us around the road closures / traffic hell, or should we just take the train?"
