Sometime during the mid or late 1980s, I remember my parents discussing a news report of a marathon run held in Australia during the height of summer. I currently use Runkeeper on my iPhone to log runs and races (mostly 10k’s). Next year I’m doing a half-marathon and marathon. Is it worth getting a GPS watch & heart rate monitor? (Considering the Garmin 220 or 620.) I’m thinking about the convenience/functionality of a watch versus a phone, and the training benefits of a HRM. I’d rather not get another device unless it’s a marked improvement.

I saw my sports therapist doctor who is a respected doctor in his field. i told him that i wanted to run a marathon someday but he said that marathons are unsafe for hearts/muscles/bones and encouraged me to stick to shorter races. He also said 12-20 miles a week is the sweet spot for running and anything over that loses health benefits. he said he wrote a paper on it. 2 years ago my husband got all huffy and insulted that I hadn't seen all the James Bond movies and instated "Bondathon" where we watched one Bond movie, in order, every sunday every week until we got through them all. I would never personally actually bandit a marathon (to bandit is to run a race without having paid the fee to register). Please no comments on whether it's good, bad, or immoral. But for curiosity sake, according to this article in the wall street journal, it's not illegal at all. And if it's not illegal, how can the "bandit catchers" force a bandit off the course? Are there really that many bandits at most marathons? What if a bandit only ran from mile 2 to mile 24? I find everything about this topic interesting. Experiences, and tips are appreciated.

I have to be in Paris for an academic conference on May 31 to June 1st. On June 2nd, there's a marathon in Sauternes, which appears to be about 6-7 hours south-west of Paris by car. My question is (1) having never been to France, and never traveled around Europe except by train and since college, can I get from Paris to Sauternes in time to run the race at 8:30am the next morning realistically?
