THE PROBLEM: Let's say you have a large store spread across several floors of a building, with many many aisles and sections. There are information kiosks located at various rooms in the store, oriented different directions. Each information kiosk has a map of the store on it, with the aisles and sections numbered and labeled, and the map rearranged and the text rotated to the viewpoint of the customer standing at the information desk. What is the most efficient way to create and update that map as sections change? [more inside]

I did something stupid today and 'updated' my iPhone 4 to iOS 6.0. The new Maps app doesn't include public transportation options (as Google Maps did previously) which I use extensively here in San Francisco. What are my options? Will anything be as seamless as the Google Maps app was?
I have an iPhone 4S with iOS 5. If I download iOS 6 tomorrow, will Google maps be replaced with Apple maps? Meaning, will the upgrade REMOVE Google maps from my phone? If so, will I be able to download a Google maps app? I already have other 3rd party map apps; I want the one that's actually from Google. [more inside]

I need a little inspiration for a project: I'm looking for unorthodox, interesting and engaging global political maps. All types of projections welcome, just looking for interesting ways of representing country boundaries in the context of a global map.
A researcher at my workplace has asked for help finding examples of his topic, early examples of "GIS (Geographic Information Systems) or GPS (Global Positioning Systems) technologies in film and TV", "examples of early precursors to map related technologies". I found someone else's Ask from earlier this year that hits on some likely ones, but he's on the lookout for older and more diverse instances if you can think of any. More details and examples below the fold! [more inside]

I'm helping someone with their local political campaign and I've been given a voter list with about 2500 records - I'm estimating that it probably has around 1500 unique addresses. I've been asked to map them and produce street by street maps, identifying the address and which side of the street it's on to make it easier to go door to door. Some questions: [more inside]

I want to create a "crime map" of a city over time. I know the dates of the crimes, and I know the physical address. I'd like for the crime map to be something that I could show a crowd in a presentation such that the audience members could witness for themselves how a particular part of the city changed as time went on. I was thinking of Gapminder as the ideal, but spatially and dynamic instead of simply numbers. I suppose it'd be possible to get something up and going with GIS, but I was wanting to do it in a way that was idiot-proof as this is only valuable to me if I can do it easily without a ton of time learning some new program.
What I want to do seems simple enough. But, it turns out, I may be too simple to do it! Or something. I have a dataset of survey responses. There are approximately 80K observations, which include response zipcode. What I want to do is make a map depicting which areas had the heaviest/lightest response rate. I have the following software at my disposal: GoogleEarth (but not pro) -- this did not seem to be up to the task; MapPoint (the very current 2004 version); and SAS [more inside]
