I work for a local, city-wide nonprofit and would like to create a map that displays our client density by zip code. I have never made a map and have only enough knowledge of ArcGIS to know that I don't know what the hell I'm doing. Please point me to resources on how to accomplish this, or alternately, tell me that I'm simply out of my element. [more inside]
Hi there, I am interested in balloon mapping an area of London. I want to host the resulting map online but I also want to contextualise it by placing it on top of for instance, a Google satellite map like this. I also want to be able to annotate it with text and photographs taken from the ground. Are there any programmes or online editors that will let me do this? Thanks.
Trying to buy a classy map for my wife's christmas present. Are there any places online that are a bit more than simply a "poster print shop"? [more inside]

For the past year I've been trying to bike down every street in St Louis. In the beginning this was easy and wide-open and fun. The middle has been less so. Now, sitting at ≈65% completion [map: zoomable | 1.5mb png | GPX] my current approach has become overwhelming and tedious, and is no longer working; I need to get way smarter about this. How would a programmer, a mathematician, or a GIS/transit specialist approach this endgame, and what tools/software would he/she use? [more inside]

A researcher at my workplace has asked for help finding examples of his topic, early examples of "GIS (Geographic Information Systems) or GPS (Global Positioning Systems) technologies in film and TV", "examples of early precursors to map related technologies". I found someone else's Ask from earlier this year that hits on some likely ones, but he's on the lookout for older and more diverse instances if you can think of any. More details and examples below the fold! [more inside]

How can I create a trail map using a GPS? [more inside]
Basically, I want to build mapping system, similar to google maps, using something like Map server & open layers. Take in my own image, such as a building map, define roads or “hallways”, and import points via a XML or RSS feed. I want an interface that I can take the xml feed and run it under the map in a box, displaying it under the map, allowing users to click on the event, and being able to see where they need to go, and using a current fixed position, being able to see how to get there.
What kind of career can I pursue that involves maps, apart from the obvious (cartography, GIS, geography teacher)? [more inside]
