Create Map with Numbered placemarks

I want to create an interactive (zoomable map that I can embed in website with roads, etc, but with a list located below (I can create the list in another program) and icons/labels indicating the locations of landmarks. I would have used ESRI but my license expired. This is an example of a map I'd like to create.

Where can I find free NYC street maps for a for-profit travel book?

I'm trying to create a travel book and website for tourists to NYC. Are there any resources I can use for free or very low cost in regards to the street maps in the printed version, especially those including subway and/or bus stops (nice, but not required).

Mapping real-time points to a spreadsheet

I'm looking for a tool that will let me have a map interface open (Google Maps, OSM, Bing, I don't mind), click on a location, enter a brief comment, then have that data (lat/long, comment, timestamp) stored for later retrieval - something like a Google Docs spreadsheet would be ideal. Home buying tools, maps, data crunching etc.

Glorious SO and I plan to buy a home in the next 18-30 months. I'd like to line up all the best tools, maps, and data to keep track of homes we've seen, neighborhoods and towns we'd consider, flood maps, commute times, train lines--really anything and everything that could inform this decision. Yes, yes, friends, colleagues and a good agent are great resources--but we want tools at this point! [more inside]

Map Tool to Create an Area based on Commute Times

Are there any online mapping tools that given a starting address and a starting time and a maximum time spent commuting will draw a border enclosing the area you could drive to in typical traffic at that time? The idea is if I want to live within 45 minutes of work I would give it my work address, the time I normally leave work to go home at night, and the maximum time I'm willing to spend on my typical commute and it would draw a boarder the encloses the area in which I'd be looking to find a home, knowing any other neighborhood/address would be outside my maximum commute time. How to display 300+ GPX cycling routes over a Google Maps base layer

GPX Visualization on Google Maps: I have 300+ GPX files of bike rides that I'd like to be able to link to somehow over a Google Maps base layer, visually approximating this. This is related to my previous AskMe about cycling every road in a town; I need to visualize what roads I have/haven't ridden, and link that progress to a blog. Would like it to be as low-weight as possible; the 300 (uncompressed) GPX files amount to 100+mb currently (route+track+waypoints) and is only getting larger -- vanilla GMaps doesn't play nice with that many files. Much more information inside... [more inside]

How to get voter records for small towns in Massachusetts

I'm working on a personal project mapping political signage across two small towns in Massachusetts. I'd like to compare my personally gathered data with voter records over at least the last few years. Is there any chance that this data is publicly available? Seeing as the project is quite local, I'd like to get data on the scale of households. [more inside]

Where should I put the prime meridian?

So I've just sent a probe to map a new Earth-like planet, and I'd like to establish a latitude-longitude standard for the planet. The poles are pretty easy to spot since the planet is rotating, so I plop down the equator halfway between them and boom, I've got my latitude lines laid out. But now it's time to lay out the longitude lines and I need to find somewhere to put the prime meridian. How do I decide where to put it? [more inside]

Great, free, 2d mapping software (CAD style?)

Howdy Mefites, I'm currently trying to map my property, for landscape design purposes, and I'm seeking a software solution to creating the map. I'd like something free (or almost free...), something that allows me to input measured distances, something with layers, and something fairly intuitive. Pipe dream? I've tried to use Sketchup, and the ability to input line distance directly is brilliant! However, being a 3D rendering product, Sketchup lacks functionality for 2D landscape mapping and design. I've used Campaign Cartographer for years when creating RPG maps, however, it seems to lack the ability to easily create real world maps, and input measured distances (unless I'm missing something). Is there any software that I can use to accurately and intuitively map (for landscape design purposes) my 5 acre property, with layers, various symbols... and which won't cost hundreds of dollars?

Endgame tools for a cyclist trying to bike down every street in a city?

For the past year I've been trying to bike down every street in St Louis. In the beginning this was easy and wide-open and fun. The middle has been less so. Now, sitting at ≈65% completion [map: zoomable | 1.5mb png | GPX] my current approach has become overwhelming and tedious, and is no longer working; I need to get way smarter about this. How would a programmer, a mathematician, or a GIS/transit specialist approach this endgame, and what tools/software would he/she use? [more inside]

Can new technology help me map my underwater fieldsite?

I need to make relatively precise measurements, to the nearest half meter, of locations on my field site, which is on the floor of a Mediterranean cove (not more than 10m deep). One possibility is to swim on the surface above my locations and use a GPS to record the points - but so far my older-model GPS's have not been accurate enough for this. I'm leaving in about a week, and just recently I was reminded that technology may have advanced to meet my needs, even since last year! Can anyone update me on the latest and greatest (waterproof) mapping instruments out there?

Is there an online map of visual art?

There's this for literature and this for word meanings. Is there such a site that connects related visual artists? For example, if I were to type in "Egon Schiele" I could expect "Gustav Klimt" and "Oskar Kokoshka" to float around.
