I'm in Toronto and I'd like to learn to drive a manual transmission. I don't want to ask anyone to lend me their manual-tranmission car because of the wear and tear I might inflict on it, and you can't rent stick-shift cars (as far as I know) for exactly that reason. So I'm considering paying for lessons. My question: does it make sense to spend more money for lessons from a dedicated learn-to-drive-manual outfit like Shifters, or should I inquire with a regular driving school like CSS about individual lessons? Or, alternatively, do you have any other suggestions?

Given, for example, a table and a deck of cards or numbered sheets or whatever, what's a good way to put them in order? I feel like this is the sort of knowledge that would be passed around as tricks of the trade among secretaries, but, more generally, is there any field that makes systematic study of algorithms for humans instead of computers?

I've been drooling over the Leica Digilux 2 but it seems to be very expensive for what you get. I'm particularly keen though, on the manual shutter speed selector knob and the focusing ring... are there any other digital cameras (SLR or compact) out there that I could use in a similar way (the set the speed, set the focus then turn it on then take the shot kind of way).

For many years, I have been using different versions of Windows as my primary operating system - dabbling now and then with different distributions of Linux. For graduate school, I have switched to an iBook and, while I find OS X to be quite a good operating system so far, I find elements of it confusing. I am looking for a book that introduces OS X to the non-computer idiot in a comprehensible and comprehensive way. Are there any such volumes endorsed by former Windows users who have crossed over? I'm interested in buying a car with a manual transmission. Unfortunately, while I've driven with a manual a couple of times in the past, I'm still very inexperienced. What's the best way to practice prior to getting the new car or without ruining the gears on my new car (or causing traffic problems)? And is it even worthwhile to get a manual these days if I don't already know how to drive one? Keep in mind this car would be used for daily commutes through moderate to heavy traffic. [more inside]

I own a digital point-and-shoot camera, and was looking to upgrade to a "nicer" camera for some more ambitious photography. But I was wondering if it makes sense to spend a lot on a digital camera, as it seemingly will be a bit archaic, if not outright obsolete, in a few years. E.g., old Leicas or even manual Nikons still fetch fair amounts on Ebay, while digital cameras a few years old sell for a fraction of their original value. I know digital cameras are supposed to making analog obsolete, but I'm just wondering about the obsolescence factor of digital. In other words, should I buy the new digital Leica or a vintage analog Leica? Any thoughts?

I was stop and go driving for about an hour today (hanging flyers for my job; the car's a manual transmission '95 Saturn) and after I finished I was heading back to the store when I hear a pop and my stick shift is just wobbling around. I still have to hold the clutch to start the car but it is stuck in second gear so I can get it going but only drive 10-15mph. What in the hell just happened?

Since I can't get through at Cartalk, here I am: '94 Geo Metro (no power steering), manual trans. When making a turn, an unbearable grinding noise ovetakes my senses and absconds with my driving pleasure. It continues for a few seconds after the turn. Thanks in advance, and be brutally honest if you think it's a pricey fix.

Every manual transmission car I've ever driven makes a strange high pitched whining noise when going in reverse at more than about ten miles an hour. They don't make the same noise at the same revs in any forward gear. So why the difference? These are UK / European transmissions if that makes any difference.

I'm thinking about getting into photography - something I have always wanted to do, but never seemed to have the time to fit it in. I would like to go "manual" - anyone have any suggestions on what camera I should try and find? I would like to have a big clunky metal manual monster that I can learn the basics on..... There are lots of sites out there claiming that this camera is the best, or this camera is the best, or this camera.... you know. What do you suggest?
