How can I land this management job with no management experience?

I've been out of work for 4 months. I'm in the running for a management job. I don't have any management experience except a senior position in which I led the team for 5 months because my manager left her job. And that was 8 years ago. How can I pitch myself as the right person for the job? [more inside]

I can quit my miserable job — but should I?

I started a new job a little over a year ago. After starting I realized the job (and company culture) was not for me, but it is very "prestigious," I liked my coworkers and found it tolerable, at least, so decided to stay. After a series of management shakeups and horrendous treatment of my department, all of my coworkers have left... leaving only me. I can quit, but should I? [more inside]

Good online free or cheap courses in project management and Excel?

I recently started a new job as a Project Manager for an educational travel company and would like to beef up my Excel and project management skills. I was previously managing academic research studies. While a lot of that experience is relevant, my new responsibilities are more in line with those of a formally trained/certified Project Manager and so I’d like to do some self-study outside of work. Any recommendations out there for good online coursework? [more inside]

How to review my manager?

I am in a post-grad school rotational program at a widely known tech firm. At the end of every rotation we are interviewed by HR and talk about what works and doesn't work for the program. The objective is to make to make the program better and to improve the experience of our future peers. My current manager is far from optimal and I'd like to deliver a review that is not overly negative but at the same time addresses present and future concerns. Gift etiquette: Boss's children, holiday edition

My direct manager is having an open house / work-related party tonight (the 30th) and he has invited me and most of the department. We are planning on bringing a small 'host' gift, i.e. flowers or chocolates. Since it is so close to Christmas my wife thinks that we should also bring a small gift for each of my manager's two children (~6 and ~2 years old). I'm unsure whether this would be seen as 'sucking up' or if this is a good idea. [more inside]

Online listings for academic education technology jobs in North America

A UK colleague, who has worked for about a decade at various management and director levels in the UK academic sector (Education technology projects and services) is starting to consider moving abroad, but continuing the same line of work. His contact network in the education/academic sector outside of the UK is weak, and he doesn't know where to start looking online for positions in USA or Canadian Universities, Colleges, and Education Technology services and businesses that serve academia. Which are the good websites, and online listings, for these kinds of positions?

Advice on how to manage without authority

I'm the junior member of a 2-person legal team for a government agency. I routinely have to ask people wholly outside my chain of command to do things for me or, more rarely, correct work when it's not compliant with law/policy/practice. I've successfully won over the majority of the staff in my year with the agency, but one staff member is routinely argumentative with me. How do I fix this? [more inside]
