How Do You Deal With The Difficult Different?

Sandwich rage: what the 3@$!! do I pack for my lunch???

Can anyone point me to a source of packed/brown-bag lunch recipes that genuinely take no more than 5 minutes to prepare, and aren't overreliant on peanut-butter-and-banana sandwiches? Bonus points if it isn't all mimsy about low-fat mayonnaise and such. Also I only have an English freezer, so batch pre-prep is out. [more inside]

What is my management philosophy?

Employability Filter: Management Philosophy? Huh? I have an interview next week for a job I would really like to be offered...and they've told me they're going to ask me to articulate my management philosophy. I have never been in an official "management" position before and as such I've never had to articulate a philosophy about it. I have sort of a set of rules that I go by in the manage-y stuff that I do every day (keep people informed, set reasonable and clear goals, make people understand that there are consequences to actions, etc.), but I'm not entirely sure what the accepted way is of articulating these as a philosophy. Can someone who knows more about this sort of thing help a gal out?

Open-source alternatives to SharePoint for small/medium businesses?

I'm looking for an open-source alternative to SharePoint for a small workgroup. The main thing we need is reasonably robust document management/distribution, but other features (workgroup calendaring, etc.) would be useful. We're using a wiki now to distribute docs and we need better metadata, version control, etc. The solution needs to run on Linux (ideally). The obvious candidates seem to be Alfresco Community Edition or Liferay, but I have zero practical experience using or administering either. Thanks in advance, hive mind, for any tips or advice you can offer.

But will you do windows?

We find it exceptionally hard to find and hire people who are not only good at management, strategy and planning, but who are also exceptional at the hands-on tasks that are in their field of expertise. Most people we speak with, or even hire, tend to only be good at one or the other, or are only willing to do one or the other. How do we figure out if someone that we want to hire will truly be decent at both? [more inside]

Corporate Cultural

Tell me about cultural differences in your workplace. How do German, English, Chinese, Nigerian, or Tazmanian workers differ when attacking a problem, reporting status, dealing with subordinates or drinking on the job? Use this infographic as inspiration. Are certain cultures more effective than others on a shop floor versus a trading floor? I understand this question flirts with stereotypes and baked-in cultural bias. I get it, but that is what makes organizational dynamics so......dynamic. Pointing to a study that says Latin American's have a higher power distance than Germans is a great answer. Saying that the French aren't productive because they take all of August off is probably not as good. [more inside]

Nothing is certain but death, taxes, and heartless corporations

How can we get into the apartment where my mother-in-law lived? My mother-in-law, Phyllis, was found dead of a heart attack in her apartment a week ago today. We live across town. There is no known will. We do not have a key to the apartment, nor does anyone else except the apartment management. We would like to enter the apartment to see if there's a will and to start going through her belongings. The manager says she can't let us in because the "management corporation" won't let her. We've tried calling the people above her, but they won't return our calls. We hired a lawyer. He has stressed the urgency of the situation to the apartment management, but they don't seem to be in a hurry to resolve this. What can we do? [more inside]

Document Management for Small Company

Document Management Software? I work in a small (less than 10 ppl) company. We all save documents to a common drive. Of late, this has become a problem because we have multiple people working on different versions of the same document. So for Example person A may save a document to the common drive and also send copies of the document to persons B and C to review. B and C will make their edits save the edited documents to the common drive. It's gotten to the point where no one can locate the latest version of a document or find the copy of the document they were working on. When it's time to present a document, no one knows which document is the latest version. We've tried saving documents with initials and the date, but that hasn't worked. Any software or system recommendations to solve this problem would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Looking for Decisonmaking Style Selection tool

I am looking for a leadership tool I used to use back in the late nineties, but can't find anymore. It was a flowchart intended to help a person determine which decisionmaking style to use in a particular set of circumstances. Essentially it takes the D1-D5 framework (where D1 is highly directive and D5 is highly collaborative), and sets up a flowchart process that helps the person determine which to use. So for example it would ask “Will other people be affected by the decision” (yes argues for collaboration) and “Will other people's acceptance of the decision be required for implementation” (yes argues for collaboration). Need software that does project management, email marketing and advanced analytics

I am looking for an email management program (like campaign monitor) that also includes email analytics (like google analytics) and project management tools (like basecamp). I am in a small marketing department at a non-profit that relies heavily on email (100K+/month messages sent). My google-fu has failed me so far, I can't find anything that has all three components. Does anyone know of a one stop shop that does this? Also open to a using several programs as long as we can get them to work with each other.
