I.T. Ninjas

How do great I.T. Managers run their departments? I am looking for a playbook on how to run a steamlined I.T. department for an organization of 500-1000 people. McDonalds has a handbook on running a restaurant from soup-to-nuts. I want the same for an I.T. Department. I have searched the Web and Amazon and cannot practical, tactical information on managing an I.T. department. I can easily find literature on high-level concepts like ITIL, SOA, and 'Runnng I.T. Like a Business', but nothing practical like 'How to run a helpdesk', 'How To Keep Track of Software Licenses' or even 'What does an I.T. Manager really do?'. What are the things that your I.T. department does that make them great? How do I get a blackbelt in I.T. Management?

Why can't my friend move to a new job?

A friend of mine (really) recently found an opportunity to move to a different team within our company—certainly a promotion for him. Word got down to his existing management, and they said they would "block" him from moving, because they need him for an event later this year. Is that legal, and what can he do? [more inside]

Track my Assets

I have been tasked with creating a I.T. Asset Management / Inventory Process for my company. We are a relatively small shop so investing in a big framework / system would be overkill. We have maybe 200+ nodes, 20 Servers, 20 laptops, 20 Blackberrys, 15 Network Printers. Essentially I would like to track inventory from procurement to disposal. Anyone have a good approach, methodology, or system that I could follow? Do I need a label maker, a spreadsheet, a WMI script? I have no clue where to start and how to do this following some best practice.

Books on Startup Management?

I'm now managing my third startup, having successfully built and sold the first two. Nonetheless, despite my supposed expertise, I often have the sense that I'm totally faking it, completely flying blind. Are there any good books on startup company management? All the entrepreneurship books I've found are exceedingly basic, and focus only on business plan writing / fundraising; conversely, all the standard management books seem tailored only to Fortune 500s. Anything in between? A good book on how to manage a fast-growing (and, this time, non-tech) startup company day to day?

Management: means do not meet ends

I'm looking for a term for (and famous/interesting examples of) the crisis situation that occurs in an organization when the standards to which employees are held for "success" become separated (by management policies) from the ends that the organization is actually trying to achieve. In other words: Employee X "succeeds" when completing Y task, even though Y does not contribute to the effectiveness of the overall mission. For instance, Enron. Is there a term for this? Something dissonance? Other famous examples?

How to organize piles upon piles of paper.

I currently just finished my second year of college. As a electrical engineering major I find that I sometimes go back to look at course notes and material from past semesters. Thus, I have a lot of paper and not a whole lot of room to put it. Currently each class I have taken is in its own manilla folder and in a file caddy I have. This is less than ideal as most classes don't really fit in a single folder yet I do it anyway so I can keep track of them. I am looking for a creative and space saving way to store them for semi-easy access and more importantly organization. I have thought about 3 hole punching everything, but I would probably end up spending a day or so doing that. Any suggestions.
