Thriving as a small brick and mortar/e-commerce B2C retailer?

How can a small (3-5 employees) brick and mortar/e-commerce B2C retailer survive and thrive in an increasingly competitive market (outdoors/sports products) when it cannot compete on price? Any good examples of small companies doing just that? [more inside]

well known examples of power corrupts

Help me with my ten year old sons school project ! I'd like to find people - as well known as possible - to whom the adage "power tends to corrupt, absolute power corrupts absolutely" . So an ideal example would be someone who started off with good intentions and then on gaining power started behaving poorly . Also ideally once they'd turned nasty their actions would not be so despicable that you wouldn't mind explaining them to a ten year old Thanks

Is Motel Manager a Decent Job for Me Based on my Goals??

Through a friend I have been offered the opportunity to work at a "mom and pop" 60 bed motel that has a fitness center, pool, and serves meals. It averages decent ratings from guests. I'm up for the challenge but I'm no spring chicken. I lost a good paying position in the recession in 208 and subsequently had to drop out of a Ph.D program just before comps- and it looks like I won't be finishing that degree any time soon, because I currently work in a call center and can't even afford a car. Advice for new manager

Hello...I'm thinking of applying for a manager position but hesitate because not sure I'm ready or that my skin is thick enough. Anyway, I'm interested in finding resources for new managers that might help me determine whether I am willing to take on this new challenge now. I saw a similar thread but it was back in 2007 so I am wondering if there have been any recent resources in particular that you would recommend.

How much time do you spend budgeting and tracking spending?

How much time do you spend each week or month budgeting, tracking spending, thinking about your money, paying bills, etc.? These are tasks that I hate, and I , therefore, do not dedicate enough time to do them. Right now money comes in (paychecks are automatically deposited into my checking and savings accounts) and money goes out (bills are paid automatically by my banks and I spend cash and use my debit card). However, I'm not tracking everything I spend (I know that I should be), and I'm not budgeting for the future. I have a (very) small savings, but basically live paycheck to paycheck. I know that tracking spending and budgeting are the way out of this trap, but I'm loathe to get started (again--I've tried before), because of how much time I anticipate it will take. If you are tracking spending and budgeting on a regular (weekly?) basis, how much time does this activity take in order to have a clear picture of your finances and adequately plan for the future? Thanks in advance for your replies.

It's our responsibility to authoritatively negotiate market-driven technology so that we may conveniently build low-risk high-yield opportunities to stay competitive in tomorrow's world.

I'm a details-oriented guy. It seems that most people in management positions (who I assume are the ones making the big bucks) mostly talk in vague generalities. Can I, the details guy, move up make the big bucks too? Will that require rewiring myself not to sweat the details? [more inside]
