Successfully promoting great software engineers to leadership roles

I've noticed a pattern at the software company I work for: our best engineers (not just in terms of engineering but also in terms of their social skills, collaboration, coaching and working well with others) are promoted to engineering leadership roles and given direct reports. This reduces the time they spend actually making things by at least 50% due to the time they spend in management. They often don't make great managers (at least at first) and in some cases they eventually ask to return to being an individual contributor. How can we make this work better? What patterns of success have you seen for this in your own workplaces? [more inside]

Seeking more diverse resources on management and professional leadership

I am a new manager, and most of the resources (books, blogs, and podcasts) on management and professional leadership that have been recommended to me or that I've found through my own research are written or curated by white men. I'd like recommendations for leadership and management resources from a much more diverse set of people. [more inside]

I have to lay people off (while hiring). Help me be a good human.

I am a new boss at a small company and our business model recently changed. I have to hire about 10 new people — and layoff about 10 current staffers. The moves are to bring on the new skills we need for this new era. How can I do this kindly, respectfully, and in a way that sets up the team members who are staying with us for success after this rough period? [more inside]

Corporate Cultural

Tell me about cultural differences in your workplace. How do German, English, Chinese, Nigerian, or Tazmanian workers differ when attacking a problem, reporting status, dealing with subordinates or drinking on the job? Use this infographic as inspiration. Are certain cultures more effective than others on a shop floor versus a trading floor? I understand this question flirts with stereotypes and baked-in cultural bias. I get it, but that is what makes organizational dynamics so......dynamic. Pointing to a study that says Latin American's have a higher power distance than Germans is a great answer. Saying that the French aren't productive because they take all of August off is probably not as good. [more inside]

Natural leadership

I've noticed that some people have what I'm going to call "natural leadership"--that is, even if they're put into a situation where everyone is formally equal, they're the ones everyone looks to. I've been in countless such situations, and there's almost always been one person who was the one everyone else said to check with. I want to be that guy. What do I need to do to be that guy? Looking for Decisonmaking Style Selection tool

I am looking for a leadership tool I used to use back in the late nineties, but can't find anymore. It was a flowchart intended to help a person determine which decisionmaking style to use in a particular set of circumstances. Essentially it takes the D1-D5 framework (where D1 is highly directive and D5 is highly collaborative), and sets up a flowchart process that helps the person determine which to use. So for example it would ask “Will other people be affected by the decision” (yes argues for collaboration) and “Will other people's acceptance of the decision be required for implementation” (yes argues for collaboration).
