As a working artist for shy of a decade, I'm starting to feel like I'm hitting walls most of the time I make, which is making artmaking frustrating. Suggestions for how to rekindle love and patience for the process and start climbing up the next hill? [more inside]
I want to paint my Sculpy before baking it. That's because I want to paint designs on a rolled-out strip, let it dry, then roll it into beads, and then bake it. If I bake the beads first, it will be hell to paint the kind of itiny designs on the beads that I want to be there. (And I don't want to make the designs out of different colors of Sculpy - that's too difficult for me and not the look I'm going for.)
I haven't, in my research, found any way to do this. Help?!
(alternatively there is a product that is not exactly Sculpy that I can paint and then roll into beads and then either bake or get it to harden in some way other than baking?)
For a long time I've thought that it would be a fun project to put together an electric bicycle. However I've been stymied by the cost and questionable quality of the existing kits, and the complications and compromises of the various DIY methods that are out there online. I have some ideas for how to go about making a cheap and simple electric bike, but I'll be the first to admit that I'm nobody's idea of an engineer so I thought I'd run some things by y'all and see what insights you have. Before anyone asks, my purpose is not to save money, or time, or anything practical of any sort. Clothing is something we all use everyday, I appreciate style and fashion, and I'd like to learn how to make clothing in an attempt not to take it for granted. And I think it would be fun.
Assume I am a complete beginner (don't even know how to sew, but I do know how to knit, though I'm not a pro at that). What should I do? Books? Online tutorials? What is the progression of items of various difficulty to practice on?

In the past few weeks, MetaFilter has introduced me to Beate Sirota Gordon
and Aaron Swartz
, each of whom made the world a better place to live. I'm so happy to know of them and their work, but sad that I'm only learning of them via obituary; I celebrate them, and I want to celebrate the living, too. So help me out: who are the people I may not have heard of who, still here and still fighting, have worked or are working to make the world a better place?

How do you make friends in DC? My friend is a cool 23 year old woman in DC who doesn't know how to make friends in the city. She basically has her roommates, and that's it. Any idea of where the nice, normal, people in DC hang out, the people who aren't obsessed with themselves?

I'm an American guy in my mid-late twenties living in Melbourne, Australia for (at least) the next eight months. My social life was quite exciting when I first moved here during late summer, but lately it feels a bit stagnant at times. I'm looking for ideas of activities to get involved with, to make use of my free time and help me connect with new people (friends of both sexes, plus THE LADIES). [more inside]
I have a long rectangular cushion/pillow I'm in the process of making, probably about 20cm by 60cm. When I sew it up, should I just sew the cushion pad into it (which means it would have to be opened up to be washed, which would annoy me) or should I make an envelope-type fastening - and if the latter, should it go width or lengthways?
