My 77-year-old mother still likes to dress up and wear makeup (as she says, the vanity is the last thing to go), but her makeup skills leave something to be desired. I would like to get her a how to book on makeup for Christmas. What's the best personal makeup book on the market for an elderly woman who just wants to know how to apply a natural, classic look to best effect? This book should includes tips on how to work with aging skin, as I understand that's a skill in itself.
I'm a grown-ass woman (48 in a couple of weeks) and I have no idea how to wear make-up. I just never really learned. I don't like wearing it and only do it for rare special occasions, maybe twice a year or so, and whenever I do I realize that I don't really know what I'm doing. I have decided that this is unacceptable at my age, and so I turn to the sage wisdom of AskMe. [more inside]
Can anyone recommend a replacement for Clinique's discontinued lip liner pencils? [more inside]
I've always wanted to wear red lipstick. However, as a redhead with very pale, golden tone skin (see profile pic), I have yet to find one that doesn't make me look like a corpse made up by a third-rate mortician. Redheads of MeFi, have you managed to rock a particular shade of red lipstick, and if so, what is it? Someone told me to try Max Factor's Ruby Woo because it's supposed to be universally flattering... does anyone have any other suggestions?
I'm a guy starting to get serious about online video, including YouTube. It's well known that pretty much all the big, successful male YouTubers use some makeup to help them look better for the camera. How can I learn to do this? [more inside]

I’m a difficult to match color and slightly picky - what powder foundation (or BB cream if I absolutely must switch) should I look into? I am overwhelmed by options. Neutral (ish) pale shade snowflakes inside. [more inside]
My birth hair color was bright coppery red, think the color of a new penny. My eyebrows were always much lighter, and in summer, bleached by the sun to almost blonde. Fast forward to 2016. My hair is now mostly a warmish platinum, around my face and on the crown. [more inside]
I've been thinking a lot about my relationship. Maybe it was a mistake asking a question before, but now I can't stop thinking and debating, feeling guilty and exhausted about my relationship. Please advise for hopefully the last time I bring this up. The snowflakes are falling inside and it's a long post, sorry. [more inside]

I have the kind of eyes that really benefit from a dark line on the upper outer lid. I've gotten sick of even the best eyeliner smudging by the end of the day, though, and I've started considering permanent eyeliner. I'm aware that it only lasts for 5-7 years, but the question is: what happens then? [more inside]
Makeup wearers of Metafilter- what can you recommend for a foundation that is both sheer AND mattifying for a person with naturally "dewy" skin? [more inside]
I have large, round, protruding eyes. I love eye makeup! Can you point me to some eye makeup how-tos or styles that match the shape of my eyes? [more inside]
My little bottle of foundation is four years old and barely used. I put on full makeup maybe five times a year. What specific type and brand of makeup will stay stable for multiple years, or barring that, is sold in tiny enough amounts that I will use it up and feel like the cost was justified? [more inside]
In an attempt to use more of my makeup stash and get out of my rut, I have set up a list of quick "makeup challenges". I've put them in an randomiser app so the idea is that in the morning I will pick a challenge at random and try to take it on. I've already put in a few things around specific products I need to use more frequently, but I'd like suggestions on other things to add to my list. [more inside]
I have a sense of what I need to do to initially get makeup on my face in the morning. But I want to know what people do to keep it looking good all day. [more inside]

I'm finding I can't wear most mascaras at all these days – my eyes start watering like crazy as soon as I put it on, and just keep doing that for hours, so I'm looking for recommendations from folks with similar problems, and perhaps comments about a couple of products in particular... [more inside]
I'd like to get better at this not-rolling-out-of-bed-and-grabbing-the-first-clean-outfit thing, especially when it comes to remembering to put on makeup and doing my hair. Snowflakes inside. [more inside]

I have been using Femme Couture hazel eye shadow as a liner, and I am really happy with it. The problem is, I don't think they make it anymore, or it's just ridiculously hard to find if they do. I'd like to find another matte, "khaki" green shadow to replace this. [more inside]
I'll be in NYC from Jan 22 - Jan 24 and am overwhelmed with excitement and also panic about What To Do and What To Eat. Can you tell me what you love to do and eat given my wide range of interests? [more inside]
I already know of Makeup Alley and Temptalia, do you know of any others? I am looking for makeup/beauty focused community websites or apps. Not a blog with one person's view and people talk to each other in the comments, but communities where members have their own profiles and participate.
I'm about to start a work-from-home lifestyle and I want to 1) be productive and 2) not feel like a slob. Help? [more inside]
Because of the nature of our wedding venue, I will be going solo on my wedding hair and makeup. Fortunately, I have loads of time to practice. Unfortunately, given my current skill and knowledge level, an eternity may not afford enough practice time to get me where I need to be. What are the best resources for the absolute beginner to learn techniques and how-tos for wedding hair and makeup? [more inside]
I have a subscription to a couple of monthly beauty sample boxes (Birchbox for example). Most of the stuff I use, but I am rapidly gaining a surplus of some things I'll never be able to use up. What can I do with this excess beauty supply inventory? [more inside]

If one has a fair amount of lid space, and space between the crease and eyebrow, is there a way to balance out eye makeup so it doesn't look like all the makeup is on the lid (therefore making eyes appear almost proportionally smaller)? Further, is there a way to do this with a minimal amount of makeup? Thanks!
Most of my makeup is old, and I really need to replace it. I've not done a lot with purchasing new makeup recently, so I feel a bit out of touch and overwhelmed with products that are out there. I have a bunch of points at Walgreens (hey, at least there is some benefit to having too many expensive prescriptions, right?) somewhere around $100 that I can use in $50 increments. Need some suggestions with special snowflake details inside. [more inside]
I'm not sure if I'm putting my foundation on incorrectly or maybe using the wrong products. But my foundation always looks cakey and I have no idea how to fix it. [more inside]
I can just about get a handle on special occasion make-up, but I have no idea what to do with my face on a regular workday basis that makes me look better than normal but also doesn't involve a dozen different steps and expensive products. I think the best way of doing this would be to tell me a little about your daily, workday make-up routines. [more inside]
I bought a tube of silver cream makeup for my halloween costume weeks ago! I thought I was so prepared, but now I'm realizing when I apply it to my face, it doesn't really seem to dry. I'm not close to any costume stores, unfortunately, but I do have a pretty well stocked drug store nearby, what should I be putting on on top of this to ensure that my face is not wet all night? Or alternatively, have I just not been waiting long enough-- how long should this stuff take to dry?
My Halloween costume is just a regular old undead sort of demon: black eyes, horns, and a very white face. My intent is to have a scary pale, almost paper-white visage, but I want it to look less thick/flat and more 'natural' than standard clown grease paint. I have no makeup application experience whatsoever. Can you help me figure it out? [more inside]
I have the Anastasia Beverly Hills Cream Contour Palette. What makeup brushes do I use? [more inside]
What "finishing touches" really pull together your look? What do you do (and what resources do you use) when you start to feel bored with your wardrobe, makeup or hair, and just need some inspiration? And what do you do to seal the deal and look "put together" if not "polished"? [more inside]

My 7-year-old daughter is intensely into makeup. She went as Cleo De Nile (A mummy queen with gold lame sandals) last Halloween, and as a Vampire Princess the year before. I think she'd like to learn about special effects makeup. I recently saw a young girl's work who had done some amazing things, including a great looking third eye on her forehead. Is there a particular set of books, or kits, or websites you can recommend?
I've been into fashion for awhile, but I have yet to really learn much about makeup outside of bb cream, bold lips, and cateye eyeliner. I want to develop a more versatile daytime look for my (soft autumn) coloring/look. (Blonde hair, hazel eyes, warm + fair skintone.) [more inside]
I used to use Neutrogena's solid foundation makeup that contained salicylic acid, but they've discontinued it. Is there anything like it on the market now? [more inside]

I'm looking for a product I bought at Sephora within the last four years that is no longer there or on the website (or any website, apparently) and I don't remember the name of it, only the brand: Fresh. [more inside]
I need a bright light for when I put on makeup and deal with my eyebrows and stuff. I live in a rental, and I can't put holes in the walls or install light fixtures. Can you recommend something? [more inside]
I'm in my late 40s and almost never wear makeup. Yet for the last month I've been obsessing over trying a bright red lipstick. (This happened when I saw another mom at my kid's school, dressed in totally casual clothes, casual hair, yet absolutely ROCKING a bright red mouth.) How to accomplish this without looking like a fool and/or spending a fortune? [more inside]
I want to read/learn/discover more about make-up as part of the fashion industry, as a feminist act, as a weapon of patriarchy, personal stories of make-up - not the how to do it or what to buy, but the whys of make-up. Tumblrs, videos, articles, books - where are people interrogating and discussing and celebrating make-up? I'm mostly interested in the feminist take, but I'm also interested in other aspects, and from commercial make-up to theatrical fantasy stuff.
The best lip product I've ever had was Urban Decay's Lube in a Tube. It was a tinted lipgloss that was extremely cooling (minty? mentholated?) and had a bit of exfoliating grit in it. Putting it on chapped lips was like sweet relief. But, now that I'm finally using up my last tube, I'm discovering that this product was discontinued years ago. [more inside]
Does anyone know of a few good brands that do a customizable travel make up palette that includes not only eye shadow but liner, as well as foundation, bronzer etc? I can't seem to find anything online except for a few hits on the big "mature" skin companies like Estee Lauder.... Thanks ladies!
So I'm aware that MeFi is probably the wrong place to ask this but you amazing people have surprised me before! I'm looking for the best-of-the-best fashion agencies in Paris, Milan, L.A., and London. Requirement: must represent talent, like hairdressers, stylists, etc. I am not looking for a modelling agency. More over the fold. [more inside]
