I've been into fashion for awhile, but I have yet to really learn much about makeup outside of bb cream, bold lips, and cateye eyeliner. I want to develop a more versatile daytime look for my (soft autumn) coloring/look. (Blonde hair, hazel eyes, warm + fair skintone.) [more inside]
I used to use Neutrogena's solid foundation makeup that contained salicylic acid, but they've discontinued it. Is there anything like it on the market now? [more inside]
A few of the mainstay items in my beauty regimen aren't cruelty free and I'm having a hard time finding replacements that don't give me acne or allergies. Can you recommend alternatives to these products/brands so I can stay true to my desire to be a cruelty free consumer? [more inside]
Help me find right foundation for cool skin tone with pink undertones? And any other make-up you recommend for this complexion? [more inside]
I'm looking for a product I bought at Sephora within the last four years that is no longer there or on the website (or any website, apparently) and I don't remember the name of it, only the brand: Fresh. [more inside]
I need a bright light for when I put on makeup and deal with my eyebrows and stuff. I live in a rental, and I can't put holes in the walls or install light fixtures. Can you recommend something? [more inside]
I'm in my late 40s and almost never wear makeup. Yet for the last month I've been obsessing over trying a bright red lipstick. (This happened when I saw another mom at my kid's school, dressed in totally casual clothes, casual hair, yet absolutely ROCKING a bright red mouth.) How to accomplish this without looking like a fool and/or spending a fortune? [more inside]
I want to read/learn/discover more about make-up as part of the fashion industry, as a feminist act, as a weapon of patriarchy, personal stories of make-up - not the how to do it or what to buy, but the whys of make-up. Tumblrs, videos, articles, books - where are people interrogating and discussing and celebrating make-up? I'm mostly interested in the feminist take, but I'm also interested in other aspects, and from commercial make-up to theatrical fantasy stuff.
The best lip product I've ever had was Urban Decay's Lube in a Tube. It was a tinted lipgloss that was extremely cooling (minty? mentholated?) and had a bit of exfoliating grit in it. Putting it on chapped lips was like sweet relief. But, now that I'm finally using up my last tube, I'm discovering that this product was discontinued years ago. [more inside]
Does anyone know of a few good brands that do a customizable travel make up palette that includes not only eye shadow but liner, as well as foundation, bronzer etc? I can't seem to find anything online except for a few hits on the big "mature" skin companies like Estee Lauder.... Thanks ladies!
So I'm aware that MeFi is probably the wrong place to ask this but you amazing people have surprised me before! I'm looking for the best-of-the-best fashion agencies in Paris, Milan, L.A., and London. Requirement: must represent talent, like hairdressers, stylists, etc. I am not looking for a modelling agency. More over the fold. [more inside]
I've been wearing makeup more regularly than before, but I can't seem to get my foundation to look consistent from my home (where I apply it) to work/elsewhere. I think this is because the lighting in my house is mostly incandescent and at work it's fluorescent. What techniques (or technology, do I need a lighted mirror?) can I use to make my makeup look decent at work? [more inside]
Does anyone have a lead on where I could buy non-traditional lipstick colors in Seattle? Preferably downtown or at a mall. I'm looking for a blue, purple, and/or teal, and I'm obsessed with this mint green color from Lime Crime. Thanks!
Middle-aged and older women of Metafilter, what foundation do you recommend? [more inside]
I would like to figure out what the hell well dressed women of my age wear to look stylish, classy, and even if possible sexy! Please help me find what to wear, from inside out, like I am your own personal midthirties professional, casual, and formal doll. [more inside]
For my birthday (many moons ago) I said I wanted to go buy some makeup as everything I have is ancient and from the drugstore. Now my husband wants to take me makeup shopping tomorrow and I don't know how or where. I think some professional advice is in order, but I'm also a bit leary of the hard sell. Do I go to, like, a counter at Macy's? Which one? A different department store? A makeup store? Which store? I am in the Chicago northwest suburbs and looking for someplace between roughly Evanston and Woodfield Mall. [more inside]
I think a MeFite once linked to an awesome website that sold all my favorite brands (Smashbox, NARS, MAC, Urban Decay) at a discount, and it was reputable. Does anyone know which one it is or any reputable website that you've used, sells at a discount and is reliable?
I am appended to a cosmetics nerd, who is daily engrossed in the theory, history, and practice of makeup in Europe and the US. This is someone who has shelf space devoted to books on, like, the material culture of powder compacts between the great wars. [more inside]
I just found out I'm going to be interviewed for a PR thing for my workplace tomorrow, and it will air on local news. Exciting! But I'm so worried I will look bloated/saggy/dull/sleepy or talk with a lisp or a weird accent or completely lose my mind and stare blankly at the camera, sweating. What are some tips to help me look, feel, and speak at my best? [more inside]
How do I touch up makeup? I've been experimenting with wearing make-up more regularly and I've got some morning routines down, but I need to know how to do a midday touchup for dry skin. [more inside]
So, my kid wants to be a zombie for Halloween. Fine. But stuff that is too scary gives him nightmares. I do not think he can deal with most of the zombie masks you can find in costume stores. And also I don't want to scare the little kids that will be at the places we are going. [more inside]
I'm officiating my little brother's beach wedding tomorrow, and I discovered WAY too late that my rarely-used makeup collection was a lot more, uh, congealed and icky than I realized. The only place I'll be able to stop to refresh it, though, is a Rite Aid. I'm not great at picking makeup to begin with, and the additional deadline is cranking the pressure up to 11! Makeup gurus of AskMe, I could really use your help... [more inside]
Can you recommend a mascara that will actually wash off my face? [more inside]
What products - types of products, not specific brands - should I purchase to create a 'starter makeup kit' for a young professional? [more inside]
I would like to wear make up. I'm 39 and a professional and I would like to look put together and not like I fell out of bed in the morning (even when I did). This question is a bit of a mess of insecurities, please help me get started? I read this question and found it useful in general, but would like an answer for specific questions: [more inside]
Looking for websites and books for guidance and encouragement, not just techniques, in professional dress. I am entering a field where the top echelon of business casual seems to be the default setting. [more inside]
I have, at conservative estimate, a TON of makeup. Not a lot of big, oversized palettes (2? maybe?), mostly individual eyeshadows, lipsticks, blushes, pencils, mascaras, glosses. I cull through often for expired stuff, old stuff, stuff I don't use, but it still kind of takes over bathroom counter space. I have a couple sets of plastic drawers on the bathroom counter, and a segmented acrylic cup thing (for pencils and brushes), but it's still just a hot mess and I can't find things. I need advice and inspiration - how do *you* do it?
I made it through most of my 37 years without wearing make-up. I also made it through most of my 37 years without ever getting a stye. [more inside]
In a couple of weeks, my sister wil be running a charity face painting booth at her small town fair. I am too busy with work to help but want to contribute in some way. I'm wondering if somebody here has any "hacks" or tips that might boost her facepaint throughput rate. [more inside]
I'm interested in learning about applying makeup, starting from zero knowledge. [more inside]
I went from dirty blonde hair and pale skin to jet black hair and tan skin... now what do I do with my makeup? Silly snowflake details inside. [more inside]
I wrote a story for an online women's magazine, and it was picked up for a Canadian television network. They'll tape me as I'm telling my story, and then they'll re-enact it with actors. If you've ever seen Investigation Discovery episodes, it'll be like that, but funny. How do I get through this? [more inside]
I'm southeast Asian (Filipino), with deep yellow undertones and a very shiny T-zone. I need help finding a liquid-based foundation that both matches my skin tone, and helps control oil. I do not like using BareMinerals, because the powder gets all over the place, and I have no patience for cleaning brushes. What are the brands that I should be looking at? [more inside]
I bought the L'Oreal Double Extend mascara based on its many recommendations here, but am having a heck of a time removing it. What am I doing wrong, and how are you doing it right? [more inside]
I use MAC Studio Fix. I want to switch to Nars Sheer Glow. I would much prefer to buy online (not at a makeup counter), but colour-matching is a problem. Any advice? [more inside]
How can I get the most out of a portrait session at a department store studio? I am looking for a "professional" portrait to be used in bios and marketing stuff, and am looking for advice on specifics to ask for (or avoid), both from the photographer and from the makeup counter beforehand. [more inside]
I want to learn how to apply makeup. For fun, for the art of it, and so that I will have the ability to enhance my natural beauty when I choose to. But I'm a little worried that I'll end up feeling like I should wear makeup all the time. I'm also worried that I'll end up feeling ugly instead of beautiful - that I'll be taught to closely examine my face for all sorts of "flaws" that I never saw before and won't be able to unsee. I want to feel pretty, not the opposite! Do you have any suggestions for a "how to apply makeup" website/tutorial/resource that is fairly positive, down-to-earth, and not hypercritical? Any related advice?
So I'm having a recurrent pink eye issue that has been going on for months. Obviously eye make-up is a no go, but considering this has been going on for so long, I feel I should probably just work around it instead of waiting it out. Does anyone have any techniques for putting on mascara without touching the brush? [more inside]
TV shows and movies frequently feature characters with five o'clock shadows or a day or so worth of beard growth. Given that production schedules often require long shooting days, how do they keep a five o'clock shadow from looking like 8 am the next morning? How are actor's beards kept at the couple of days growth look when a sixteen hour shooting day could easily have them well on their way to looking like one of the Boston Red Sox? [more inside]
My current mascara (Cover Girl Professional) leaves residue that collects in my tear duct area and beneath my lower eyelid. I apply the mascara carefully, and remove it thoroughly at the end of the day, but the gunk nevertheless manages to surface, sometimes the following morning. I've tried both the waterproof and non-waterproof formulas without success. While this doesn't irritate my eyes (yet), I can't imagine it's good for them. I'm seeking recommendations for mascara that won't leave gunk behind. Bonus if it's also effective at making your lashes long and full.
I am trying to learn how to do make-up. All the advice for contouring requires you to have some bronzer a shade darker than your skin. The thing is, I'm super pale, and I don't have much of an interest in looking more tanned than I am. Are there any other colour options for shading my face?
So, every time I go looking for recommendations for makeup, etc. (here, and Makeup Alley, mostly), the majority of highly rated items are US products that are usually impossible or expensive for me to get, which is why I'd like your tips for your top-rated favorite bath and beauty items made-locally / available in Europe at reasonable cost. Maybe I can replace a few things, and find some new gems. [more inside]
I start the day looking and feeling bright and bushy-tailed-- I put on my makeup in my well-lit bathroom, and feel pretty perky and great in the morning. At some point mid or late-aftenroon, when I check the mirror in the bathroom at work, I leap back in horror. Somehow, over the course of the day, I have gone from looking gorgeous and fresh to tired, droopy, and ICK. What happened? It could be partially that my eye makeup has started to bleed into my under-eye area... but is that all? How can I make this not happen?
My partner got an eyeliner tattoo today and it didn't go well. Needless to say she hates it, refuses to go out in public, and is edging pretty close to depression over this. It doesn't look that bad to me, but I'm the first to admit I'm fashion blind. Basically, the technician overdid it on one side resulting in the liner extending past the eye with a slight curl up, it's not a style that's unheard of, but it's not my partner's style at all. My dance troupe wants to perform at a Day of the Dead wedding. We want to do some form of Day of the Dead makeup/sugar skull makeup. However, I am a white girl from the suburbs. Is there some non-cultural appropriation way to do this? [more inside]
