Recently, a friend celebrated her birthday with a "learning to Batik" party. We all went to a Batik shop, created a design, Batik'd that design onto a product of our choosing, and then had lunch together. I really enjoyed that we got to learn something new to all of us, were all working on the same type of thing but out own separate versions, and there was an end product for each person. I'd like to something similar to celebrate my birthday and would love more Maker/geeky-esque ideas. Any suggestions for what the skill/end product could be? More specifics inside. [more inside]
Experiments with MakeyMakey have led me to dive deep into the Maker World. I'm trying to develop a completely wireless version of a project I developed and I'm not sure if I'm going in the right direction. [more inside]
I want to get a Father's Day gift for my dad. He makes stuff. I'm looking for a tool that 1) is for making stuff out of atoms, not bits, 2) is sui generis, supremely better than competing stuff and 3) not something that a woodworker and machinist with 4+ decades of experience already has in his shop. We're hosting a Maker Fair later this summer. This is my first crack at organizing such an event, so everything is new, exciting, and freaking me out. Our theme is "City of Makers", and we'd like to include a collaborative installation that builds into a big piece of art over the course of the day. In this way, people will see that it's not hard to be part of making something awesome. Key to this is that the end result is awesome, and not a giant pile of crap (unless that too is awesome). Looking for general and specific recommendations for outer space and astronomy themed merchandise, collectible, and other vendors, for a maker / science fair being held in the Los Angeles area. For example, a local comic book/toy shop that has vintage Space 1999 and Star Trek collectibles, a hobby store that specializes in Estes and other rocket sets, or even maybe some random dude looking to sell of his collection of used spacesuits. I'm looking to dip my toe into fiddling with electronics, robotics and similar stuff and wanted to know if there's a place that is better for beginners than others. It's hard to tell without spending many days lurking on the many sites that turn up from a quick google search and I'd prefer to just seek your wisdom first before I go down that route. Thanks!
We're looking into building a desktop 3d printer with our just-teen sons. What's a suitable 3d printer building process/kit, with good instruction chapters, for a sub-$1K investment, in a OSX/iOS, not-extreme-tinkering household? (Any recommendations from this recent list of entry-level 3d printers, some of which have kits?) [more inside]
My ice maker makes ice (yeah) and the auger will turn when depressing the plate on the front of the refrig door. But the little trap door will not open to let the ice drop down. Do I have to replace the whole ice maker or is there any trick to fixing this myself? [more inside]
I am desperately seeking a reliable coffee maker that makes a decent cup. What are your suggestions? [more inside]
Hi, simple question here. My friends and I are designing logos on photoshop. We'd like to put the finished logos on some shirts what we'll probably wear for a marathon. I'd love to hear some recommendations on what reputable online sites you might have used - I found a a decent bunch of choices on google, but can't seem to find reviews so It'd be nice to have some anecdata.
One of the first issues of Maker Magazine had a project to build a backyard modern shed/office with simple materials bought at any home improvement store. I've been Googling all morning but can't seem to find the plans online or any references to the project since the magazine has launched Maker Shed as their store for buying stuff, which muddies the results. Can anyone help me find this project?
I need to take masters credit worthy classes, I already have a Masters degree so want to take a greater range of courses. What classes would you put in a Masters degree for someone as part of the "Maker" community? [more inside]
I'm much of the way through building a TRS Drawbot robotic arm thingy, and I need to buy cable organizer / management clips more or less like this that are large enough to hold a sharpie (or similar-sized) marker. The Make Magazine project was sponsored by a US retailer that doesn't exist in Canada, and I'm having trouble locating an equivalent or serviceable substitute on short notice here. If you've seen these or something that you think would work in a pinch around - at a national chain, or somwhere in the downtown/East end Toronto areas - I'd really appreciate your help! I'm trying to find more about a pair of jumping stilts that I saw at maker faire (2013 Bay Area) that are substantially different form any I've seen online. Does anyone know anything about these - they had a glossy metallic-red (almost Ironman-like?) nearly-knee-high boot instead of the usual clamps, and the spring power seemed to come from a lot of black rubber cording bunched in the rear as if a calf muscle (I don't recall the mechanism, but bungie cording suggests it's different to the blade-spring traditional design). Are these something that can be purchased, or were they a maker-crafted one-off?

So I started a little maker-project,but I am new to all this and don't know the correct vocabulary to get what I need. What I need is a screw-nut with a little threaded hole in it's side so I can secure it with a little screw on the threaded rod I screw the srew-nut onto. It looks like this. Bonus points if you can tell me the german word for it. My second question is for a nice Forum where I can ask those beginners questions about mechanical problems. Maybe a nice Maker forum where all kinds of stuff like this and Arduino, 3D printing etc. question can be asked. Thanks!
I've been building guitar pedal kits from buildyourownclone, and it's been great fun. I'm running out of pedals I want to make for myself, and am looking for other projects, like this stereo tube amp, and maybe this sous vide. Can you recommend more electronics projects (preferably kits, so I don't have to scrounge for parts) that are cool and look good at the end? [more inside]

Hello Austin, Where are my people? I recently moved to Austin, TX from Fargo, ND (of all places). I've quickly discovered that this place is flooded with awesomeness, to a point of being mildly overwhelming. Thus, I am asking for help with finding things and people with similar tastes. I am, a maker crafts person type, I mostly sew and knit but I have a background in sculpture and some interest in learning electronics. I am also a cyclist, who loves chill coffee houses and a sense of community. I'm looking for: 1. a place to consign/wholesale goods I make, mainly plush toy monsters, before the holiday season. also craft fairs 2. a couch, or a place to find a couch (secondhand); thrift stores dont seem to have much in the way of furniture. 3. a good, non-chain, hardware/surplus store. 4. a good fabric store 5. a job 6. fellow makers

Soon, I'm going to have a nice cash bonus at work and about two weeks of vacation time. I don't have enough money for a travel-vacation, so I figured I'd turn it into a learning-vacation: I'm going to focus on playing guitar, but also, I'd like to learn some 101-DIY electronics projects. I adored Lego Mindstorms as a kid, then kind of gave it up for awhile. Now I'm looking for something similar. More inside! [more inside]
