Over the last couple of weeks, I have started to receive mail (US, snail) addressed to people who do not live at my address. We are the third owners of our house, and the names appearing on the envelopes are not previous residents. The names are not local neighbors either. I have not yet received a duplicate name. I suppose this could be some odd coincidence, but in the entire time we've lived here, apart from the odd mail to previous residents, I haven't had mail like this. The stuff I'm getting ranges from marketing junk to forms that someone must have requested from the IRS. Its not a flood of mail- I've seen three pieces in the last two weeks, but the IRS piece has me a little spooked, and has set off alarm bells. This smells a bit like someone laying the groundwork for ID theft- either mine, or someone elses. Should I be concerned?

Have you ever tried to send a piece of mail at the post office certified or signed? Yesterday I tried and the lady went into all this strange ins and outs to justify why I should pay $5 for priority mail envelop instead of the $2.50 (or so) I could pay to just track it (if I skipped the mailed receipt option). This included telling me I'd have to pay for the envelope (which is fine), but insinuating it would be expensive and deflecting how much an envelope would actually be (finally admitting it's only 10 cents).

I'm planning to add a feature to my website that will allow users to request periodic updates by email. I've cobbled together a little PHP script that uses the mail() function. It works perfectly when I test it myself, but I have no idea how this will work when released to a signficant number of users.

Is there an alternative to Pitney Bowes? My office uses Pitney Bowes for mailings and I CAN'T STAND THEM. They have the worst customer service, a horribly rigid billing service and the most aggressive fees and finance charge racket of any vendor I've ever worked with in my life. Nobody I talk to knows of any resonable alternatives. Is there something out there that will save me from the misery of working with those SOBs?

I have relatives in Japan who want me to mail them some over-the-counter medicines--specifically, extra-strength Tylenol and Sudafed (the new kind, without pseudoephedrine.) Both are legal in Japan and would be for their personal use only. So how do I find out how much of each I can mail them at once?

Sometimes my Entourage allows outgoing messages on a new network, sometimes it doesn't (in which case I use the web based client, which is a pain). Just wondering if there's an easy way to fix this, or do you have to tweak something with every new network you use?

I have a curbside mailbox and mail theft is common in Utah (http://deseretnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,600129714,00.html). Big Credit Card Company (BCCC) sends me convenience checks that can be stolen and cashed by anybody. The post office won’t let me move my mailbox to my house. Local politicians sided with the Postmaster. A rental box or a new security mailbox are impractical.

Leopard, Apple Mail & IMAP issues: Since upgrading to Leopard, Apple Mail seems sluggish and unresponsive. The application is effectively unusable. It's gotten to the point where I'm using webmail access on all of my machines. Is this an issue with Apple Mail or have I misconfigured something (I use Dreamhost for my personal email accounts).

I sent out my taxes (for the first time MONTHS early) and sent them Certified Mail (upon the recommendation of an accountant) for the first time as well. I got the little green card back for the State Taxes but I never got one for my Federal Taxes. Does this mean that my Federal Tax return was lost in the mail? How do I go about verifying if my tax return was lost? Can I send them a copy? What do I do?

What is the cheapest way to mail a single pencil to someone? I'm talking US domestic to US domestic address. An ideal solution wouldn't require a trip to the post office (although the first one I send probably would be through a desk clerk to make sure it's ok). I want something I could stick in my mail box as the need arises. Looking for suggestions for packaging material as well as postage.
