Mac users: Can somebody please tell me how to set up a keyboard shortcut or script that allows me to toggle between U.S. keyboard and International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) keyboard layouts? I switch these on and off a LOT when I'm using my iMac and Macbook, but am tired of constantly going up to the little flag dropdown menu in the Finder (which I have to do repeatedly as I switch from program to program, since the drop-down window change doesn't seem to apply globally, but rather only within the current program you have up top). I know there's an easier way, I just haven't gotten around to figuring it out or setting it up. Thanks!

I found an archive of old mail I got in the late 90's using Outlook Express 4 (OE4). The files are in .mbx format, not in .dbx (and certainly not in standard mbox). Opening the files in an hex editor allows me to view the content of those mailboxes. Is there anyway to convert that mail archive into something more usable for Mac OS X (or Linux)?

Why is the POP3 mail protocol so slow and why hasn't a new version of POP been developed that fixes the speed problem? I'm pretty sure that it would be far faster to just download a compressed file containing all the messages and then unzip it and parse it locally. POP3 is fine when you keep up with your mail, but leave for a week and come back and I end up waiting quite a while to get all the mail downloaded.

I have discovered that someone I don't like very much made a mistake: he sent a large quantity of individually personalized mail at bulk mail rates via USPS. I believe this is a no-no, but ultimately I would guess it is a pretty minor no-no. What are the consequences of this? Are there civil or criminal penalties when this is discovered?

I have a CD with mail archived from Outlook Express in .dbx files (
misc.dbx, work.dbx, personal.dbx, inbox.dbx, etc.). It contains old reviews and resumes that I need details from. I now have a Mac (with Mail.app only) and I can't figure out how to open or convert them. I don't even need to import them into Mail--having them export to simple individual text files would be fine. I just want to be able to read the content.

I have in my hand a "Past Due Notice" for my stay in-- and I quote-- "the hospital." It claims to be from Texas Medicine Resources, which is a real company, but the address they want me to mail my $250 to is of course different from the one Google gives me, and besides that there is not a lick of specific information anywhere that would convince me they have any connection to my medical history. Assuming I'm right that justice needs to be served,
how can I help that happen? [more inside]
