I have an idea for yet another hairbrained social networking website (which paradoxically might hit it big :-) ). I've coded most of it up on a linux server using apache, php, mysql at softlayer.com. The hostname is registered at godaddy (which I can change if desirable). What's the minimum I need to do the following (I'd rather work on the website application logic and learn as little as possible about mail server administration for now): [more inside]

I believe the mail server associated with my domain name is acting as an open relay. Hosting company claims everything's good. How can I double-check? [more inside]

It seems like almost every time i open my mailbox i get this advertising mailer
in there. How on earth do i go about complaining and get this crap to stop! I assume there are laws like there are spam these days, if you say "unsubscribe" they have to obey?
Googling for it only came up with the link i pasted above and looking on the Kansas City Star website was no help either. Any advice?

Isn't there any way to permanently block delivery of unaddressed junk (USPS) mail? The post office insists on cramming increasingly thick stacks of "Occupant", "Resident", etc mail into the box every day and it's become ridiculous. [more inside]

I have a very basic requirement that Apple Mail doesn't seem to easily fulfill. I need to immediately delete messages that are identified as junk from the server. [more inside]

Spam-a-lot: Are there spam filters that can reject phony "Mail returned" virus e-mails by comparing the "failed" address to what you've actually sent? Such hoaxes are dominating my daily spam quotient, despite my use of spam-blocker Razor. But it seems like these would be easy enough for a program to detect.

SpamAssassin is, like, not working. I am dying under the weight of spam. I lie awake at night, crying, wounded. I love my e-mail address. I run my own e-mail server (using qmail and vpopmail). What's a boy to do?
