The hotel in Iceland where we are staying will hold mail that arrives before we do. How should I tell people to address the envelopes? [more inside]
For the past week or so I have been getting mail addressed to another person and address, with the little yellow "mail forwarding" sticker on the bottom saying "please forward to [blast hardcheese's address]." This seems like it could either be a dopey mistake or, more likely, a weird scammy thing. What should I do? Would it be weird to contact the other person? [more inside]
Half the apps on my iMac that sync with iCloud have corrupt or missing .plist files that prevent them from launching. Signing out of iCloud, restarting, and logging back in to reset synced data did not resolve problems. Running First Aid on drive returns no errors. What next? [more inside]
My dad gets a dozen mailers a week from horrible scam companies promising to "renew his manly vigor". How to stop them? [more inside]
I only want to receive new mail when I click the "Get Mail" button in Mac Mail. [more inside]
I have observed that when thank-you notes written by people from old money families are personally delivered, the annotation "By hand" is invariably added to the bottom right corner of the envelope. Can anyone educate me as to the origins of this practice?
I need to mail (via USPS) a manila envelope to someone important in lower Manhattan. And I need to know for sure when it will arrive, so I can email him same-day notice of its imminent arrival, so he watches for it and it doesn't sink into a pile of other mailings. If I drop it at a post office in his zip code (10007) the previous afternoon, am I assured he'll get it the next day? Is there any other way (without making it look like I'm trying too hard) to be sure of delivery date? I'm not in a rush....I just need to know for sure.
I am trying to back up my Gmail account to my home computer, a MacBook Pro. I am able to sync the account and have downloaded most of my messages/attachments, but the native Mac mail program only downloads messages as far back as 2006. (My Gmail account goes back to 2004.) Disk space is not a problem. I have also made sure the setting for limiting the number of messages to download is not checked. Any other ideas? Thanks!
I will be reinstalling mac OSX Yosemite because of constant problems with it but I am looking to retain the folders that have been previosuly created to organise my mails. I am using Outlook 2011 as my mail client. Does using: File - Export - selecting outlook for mac data file (.olm), when imported back, retain the previous folder structure that I have used to organise my mails? If not could anyone suggest how I could keep the existing folder organisation? Many thanks!
I am half remembering an interesting fact...please help me remember the whole thing. I seem to remember their was a business (a bar maybe, or a store chain?) that had a policy of allowing actors without a permanent address to receive mail at their business. I think it is/was a long tradition, can't remember if the business was related to theatre or not. Thanks!
Be glad you are not me. :) I just landed at JFK without my apt keys. I'm going to stay with a friend or get a hotel tonight. There has GOT to be a service that can deliver the keys same-day Sunday, right? FedEx says no dice. (Courier service?) The keys are in Hilton Head, SC. Thank you! Worse things have happened to people, but goddamn I am an idiot.
Our USPS mail carrier appears to have some problem with us, and it's fucking up our mail delivery in weird ways. What are my options? [more inside]
My wife and I moved into our first home in March of this year. The previous homeowners asked if we could hold onto any mail addressed to them and put it in the mailbox around Friday of each week and they would come by and get it. Fast forward to today and we are still doing this for them. It's a bit tedious and frustrating to still have to do this and I'd like to find a way to politely find a way to get out of doing this - otherwise it feels like we may be doing this indefinitely. I wish to send my dear Finnish penpal a bunch of cool things you can only buy in Canada (and maybe also stuff that may be sold elsewhere but is only really popular in Canada). What to send, MeFi? [more inside]
I ordered a textbook on Amazon from a non-Prime seller (none of the Prime sellers had it in stock) and specified "expedited" shipping. The seller provided a USPS tracking number, but the estimated shipping time is longer than I had expected. Is there any way to ensure that this package was shipped via Priority Mail?
When I was a kid, I got Ranger Rick and Dynamite and Highlights and Cricket and a bunch of other magazines in my name, and it was thrilling for me. Well, Christmas time is rolling around and I have a couple of new kids in my life, a girl age 5 and a boy age 8, and I'd like to get them actual physical magazine subscriptions because that's fun and exciting. What kids magazines actually still exist today as physical get-in-the-mail products? Im looking for a wide range of interests so I can work from a broad pool of possibilities.
I (an American) am trying to visit the Saiho-ji (Koke-dera) temple in Kyoto in November. It only accepts reservations by International Reply Coupon, which the USPS no longer sells as of 2013. What is the fastest and cheapest way for me to send a self-addressed stamped postcard or similar to Japan? Possible solutions, none of which are great: [more inside]

When I was in a pinch a couple of years ago I sold an annuity from a settlement. It worked out just fine, however, I guess I was put on some list that I had done this because after it was final I started receiving TONS and TONS of junk mail soliciting me to sell other annuities, etc. [more inside]
I use Baydin's Email Game (https://emailgame.baydin.com/) to process email. I just got a new job, and my new company is requiring me to use Outlook Express or Apple Mail instead of gmail. Baydin's website only works with gmail or with Google Apps. So I'm looking for some kind of plug-in or add-on for Express or Apple Mail that has similar functionality to the Email Game--especially a timer showing how long I've spent on each email. Does anybody know of anything like this?

I was away for a bit, on vacation. During that time, a federal jury summons came in the mail (with no postmark date). I got it today, when I got my big pile of mail that arrived while I was gone. It wants me to report on Monday, July 27th. Monday, July 27th is my first day in a new role/new department at work and I cannot miss it. [more inside]
Help me think of people/companies my daughter can send postal mail to that are likely to respond. [more inside]
Some months ago, I lost my iPod in Moscow whilst out there doing festival biz (I'm a Brit by residence). Incredibly, someone found it, the Apple security held, and I got an email from someone telling me they'd be happy to meet up and give it back. As the air fare is higher than the device cost, I thought going postal would be the best option, but I've drawn a blank - most of the delivery companies either want me to pay cash on the Russian side, or expect me to have a corporate account. My family and I will be living out of the US for 9 months (in Slovenia and Mexico). What options are there for dealing with mail? [more inside]

I have to mail a large number of packages containing electronic devices, say printers, to a few dozen military sites overseas. If I am shipping to a foreign Air/Army Post Office (APO) or a Fleet Post Office (FPO) on a US Military Base, do I have to pay customs duties and taxes on those goods? [more inside]
USPS has lost four packages of mine in the last three months without a trace. Each was handed to my mail carrier and never scanned into the system. Insurance claims denied because it was never scanned into the system, carrier supervisor unhelpful. Looking for advice on how to proceed. [more inside]
I don't just mean in a taxonomic way, but in terms of sorting and ease for the handlers -- is the postal code the most vital part? What's that last line for? [more inside]
I'm looking for a service that will, say, receive/collect UK/European packages purchased on eBay, arrange international shipping to the US, and send them to me. These would be for auctions where international shipping isn't an option. So, if it's a UK auction, I'd be looking for a UK service that could accept the package on my behalf and forward it to me. I know this service exists, but what should I be googling to find it? Is it courier shipping? Does anyone have any recommendations for particular companies/individuals who offer this service?
I thought I mailed a letter to via USPS to Switzerland. I just checked the receipt, and it turns out it went to Swaziland instead. [more inside]

My son moved to Vancouver Canada last spring. We live in NJ, USA. I have tried several times to send cards and they never arrive. We have double checked that the address is right. They had enough postage. Cards I have sent to friends in the Toronto area have arrived, but weeks later. Anyone else have this issue and what could be causing it? I just asked my son to send me a postcard to see if this problem goes both ways.
My son lives in Poughkeepsie, NY and his birthday is Tuesday, Feb. 24th. I live in Manhattan and want to send him homemade brownies. When should I send the brownies so they arrive on his birthday, and via which method for reliability? A plus would be that it not cost a fortune. Thank you!

I recently upgraded a few steps in my Mac life and have an problem I need to solve. I send out a simple newsletter to some subcribers that I create in dreamweaver- save as an html- then open in safari and, until recently, used the "Mail Contents of this Page" option that my older version of safari had, that would open apple mail and then send.. It seems that safari no longer has that option OR am I missing something. [more inside]

This makes no sense to me, but I have lost a super important email I just received by accidentally hitting the "K" key while it was highlighted in my Apple Mail inbox. It is my only copy of an important day-long interview for an academic job. I have tried searching Mail by sender and subject, searching my computer for same including searching content, looking in Mail's trash folder. The Finder's trash is empty. I am stumped, and worried. I really don't want to write back to say that I lost the email. Where could it be??

I have a pen pal in Angola (Louisiana State Penitentiary) to whom I'd like to send money and items (books, cds). I've used JPay and they charge a fee, and then Angola takes 50% of the money after that. When I mail him CDs, books, they must be new and they cannot contain explicit content. Even after I followed these rules, he didn't receive a book until months after it had arrived. Has anyone written up strategies for navigating this bureaucracy? Do any mefites have personal experience with this that they're willing to share?

Is it possible to send a physical envelope or small package (not an email or radiogram) to a Carnival cruise passenger, specifically the Carnival Freedom on the January 25th cruise? Is there a way one can purchase individual flu shots by mail for personal use in the US - and if not, why? Flu shots don't seem to require a prescription, and it would seem like it would be much easier to just get it by mail and do it myself than have to wait in line at a flu clinic. (I've had to use injectable medication in the past, so self-administering a shot doesn't bother me, and the nasal mist seems especially easily administered.)
I tried an online text form-to-postal-mail service, and it left me a bit disappointed. It charges by the page, and the text formatting controls are minimal. Even images aren't allowed. Is there a service that will let me upload a PDF and then mail it (in the U.S. via postal mail) to an address I specify?
Is it possible to get monthly or yearly data on the volume of incoming and outgoing mail from each US post office? [more inside]
