Upgrading to Adobe CS3

I currently own the educational version (no real difference beyond the price) of Adobe CS2 Premium Web Bundle which includes Macromedia Studio 8. I need to upgrade to CS3 for school, but I can't find the "bundle" that has the programs I need. So the bundle I have comes with the CS2 versions Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, GoLive, and Acrobat Professional, along with Dreamweaver 8, Flash Professional 8, Fireworks 8, Contribute 8, and FlashPaper 8. I'll be needing the CS3 versions of Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign, Flash, and Dreamweaver, though I wouldn't mind upgrading the other programs as well.
My problem is that the CS3 web bundle doesn't have InDesign and I don't need all of the video and audio programs sold in the Premium and Master bundles. Is there some bundle similar to mine that's sold by Adobe? I paid a little over $500 for the educational version, but all of the non-educational upgrades seem to cost at least that much, and it looks like you can't upgrade to the educational version - am I missing something?

Bonus: I'll need Illustrator for the spring semester, but won't need the rest of the programs until next school year. I can maybe hold of on Illustrator as well. Is it worth holding out for CS4? I've heard the developer beta is out, but haven't heard a solid release date.

Annoyingly specific question about a failed Flash installation on a Mac: 1. Some website told me to update flash. In retrospect, I think I already had version 9, but I went to the Adobe sight and downloaded the installer for power PC Macs anyway.
2. The installer opens fine and then gets to "Items remaining to be installed: 4" and just stops. Nothing happens from there even if left all night.
3. So I go download the UNinstaller. Downloads fine, but when I open it, my computer freezes - every time.
4. Have tried restarting computer several times.
5. Opened Terminal and put in:
cd "/Volumes/Adobe Flash Player 9/Install Flash Player 9 UB/Contents/MacOS"
It says: No such file or directory

sudo "./Install Flash Player 9 UB"
It says: command not found

6: For the hell of it, I also used Disk Utility to Repair Disk Permissions.

Computer Specs: iBook G4, Power PC, OS 10.4.8. I mostly use Firefox 2 but also have Safari and Explorer.

Flash does not work at all on my computer now, which is a problem. Any suggestions would be appreciated! I also welcome you to tell me a better forum for this question! Thank you! !!

Can I embed special characters in my Director text field?

Macromedia (sorry, Adobe) Director question. If I paste text from Word etc. into my Director text field, and I then select it and change it into an embedded font, will there be problems with curly quotes, em-dashes and such on other users' computers? Or does the "embedding" process enable me to use these characters? I don't care too much about curly quotes, but I do like my em-dashes & would rather not have to change them all to double hyphens.

How do I download and install Flash Player on a new MacBook?

No matter how many times I try to download and install Flash Player on my new MacBook, it won't work and I get conflicting messages. If you have a Mac running OSX, can you please try to view this page and see if it works for you? When I try to go to this page to find my local gym, it redirects me here and says that I need to download Flash Player. When I go to this page, a little box says, "Adobe Flash Player Is Installed. Version 9,0,45,0 Installed Successfully."

I downloaded the .dmg file for the Flash Player from this page to my desktop. I ran the file and the installer said that the Flash Player will be installed in the appropriate location automatically. Then I went back to the original page I was trying to view and I got a little graphic telling me to install Flash Player. What gives? I have shut down and restarted but that doesn't do anything.

I use the latest version of Firefox for most web browsing, though the same situation happens when I use Safari.

Here's a weird little hitch: I am able to view the Flash stuff on this site (at least I think it's using Flash). Perhaps the problem is with the site I am trying so hard to view and not with my computer? If I download Flash Player, how can I really know if it was installed successfully? Is there a way I can manually put the Flash file into the correct folder since it obviously is not putting in the correct folder via the automatic installation process?

I am brand new to Macs and I have bare bones knowledge of PCs, so I need really clear step-by-step instructions. If you say, "go to folder x" I won't be able to. I need to know how to find folder x. Any jargon-y computer language will be way too advanced for me to understand.

Are there good vector graphic libraries for Macromedia Flash ?

Where can I find a good vector graphic library for Flash ? I'd like to buy a collection of vector graphics (people, machines, concepts, body parts, etc.) to use in macromedia flash projects.

Easy of use (browsing the collection and inserting it to flash) is mandatory.

Are there good resources that I can use for my e-learning projects. Any suggestion ?

TechFilter: I would like to obtain the SWF file out of this SIS package. Can it be done? Seems that the SIS file will not install on my Nokia N80 because it's outdated for my phone's platform. I therefore would like to somehow get the withheld SWF file out of the package and just play it with my phone's own Flash Lite program. Searching thus far has found two utilities. One requires Perl and the other Java. Both of which I don't know how to use confidently enough. Gee, I'm not even sure if the SWF can be extracted from the SIS, so I know I might be barking up the wrong tree here. But can you help? Geek it to me, MetaFilter!

Is there a maximum file size for flash files?

I am having problem publishing my flash file. The .fla file is 85 MB. It contains images & sound. There are no movie files. The sound files have all been converted to .mp3 files and are not large in size. The image files are all around 1 mb or smaller. There is probably 30 – 40 images. I can save the file and open the .fls file just fine. It’s not slow or anything like that. I can preview each scene with no problems but going to “Control – Test Scene”. When I go to publish the file and an exe it take a long time to publish. After about an hour I get an error message that says “not enough memory”. I have no idea why and have tried to publish on 3 machines. They all have 1 gig memory and good processors. I designed it in Flash 8 on a new Dell laptop. I have never had this problem before can anyone help? I need to know why its taking so long to publish and what to do.

Can I use an academic discount on software and hardware that I eventually will use to generate money? I am currently a student, yet I also generate money at times.

Apple has the following policy about using academic discounts:

"Statement of Eligibility
I represent that I am a member of one of the defined groups above eligible to purchase and that the products being purchased direct from Apple Computer, Inc. are for my own personal, education, and/ or research use."

Macromedia/Adobe says the following:
What are the restrictions in using education versions of Macromedia products?
Education versions of Macromedia products are intended for instructional and administrative purposes only and may not be used for any commercial purpose. Macromedia will conduct periodic security audits to be certain of your education qualification.

My question . . .

If you are truly a student can they really regulate how you use your hardware/software forever into the future? So for instance if you buy Flash as a student and then freelance when you graduate, you are out of complience?

That just doesn't make sense to me. Macromedia really comes down clearly on the issue, Apple seems a little more lenient for sure.

So first of all, does anyone know where you can find all the intricacies of the rule? And second of all. . . does anyone know of any instances of a company cracking down on academic discounted hardware / software used for commercial purposes (but legitimately purchased and used for academics as well).

Is there a way to automatically inject links to corresponding text phrases in Dreamweaver? For example, everytime the phrase, "flashy raver pants" appears, would it be possible for Dreamweaver to automatically make it a link to a pre-determined site? And if not in Dreamweaver, is there another way?

I have a programming issue with sorting an array. Yeah, everything I'm trying just isn't working at the moment. I need to generate some ideas to get some lateral thoughts running through my head. Here's my question:

What's the best way to reorder (sort) an array while making sure that elements of equal value stay in the same position? I'm thinking in terms of a top scores list that should keep the earliest score above all others on the list which score the same (e.g. they both score 120 or another equal value). I have code and will post it if anyone thinks they can help. Also, I'm programming in Macromedia Flash and would call myself an intermediate user.

ImageReady help for Fireworks refugee

In Fireworks it's a one-click process to export an image slice individually (ie. right-click and select "export selected slice"). Is is possible to do the same thing quickly using Adobe ImageReady? The only way I can find to do this in ImageReady is to select the slice, then choose 'File..' 'Save Optimised As..', then modify two different drop down boxes in the resulting dialog... a much slower process than FW.

Also.. is there any good resources out there for migrating from Macromedia products to Adobe ones? In particular from Fireworks to Photoshop/ImageReady? (FW would appear to have a fragile future these days)

Macromedia Fireworks is one of my favorite tools, without peer (IMHO) when it comes to web design. But it recently stopped doing something I'd ranked among one of my favorite features. It used to be that when I clicked on a color-picking box, I could use the dropper tool to suck up colors outside of the application window, which is rather handy for quick color grab. Last week, it stopped doing this. How can I get this feature back?
