On MacOS, I can say osascript -e 'set myapp to name of (info for (path to frontmost application))' to print the name of the program that currently has focus, in a way that's useful for shell scripting. How can I get the same information in a graphical session on Linux?

What is the best application (hopefully easy to learn) that will let me build an easy to create timeline of religions, myths, and cults, with the option to click on (or hover the mouse over) different highlighted words to show up more information? Or does anyone know where said timeline exists? [more inside]

My own blue thread makes me want to know how I can record these concerts (Real media streams) to my hard drive and then convert to MP3 and then break them up into individual tracks. I'm on OS X Panther and prefer iTunes but will download whatever.
