Base model Mac Mini 4gb for home internet use - working for anybody?

Do you have a base (or low) model recent Mac Mini? How does it work for general internet use, including streaming and itunes? I like to use Firefox and open a lot of tabs, and use a few script heavy sites like Amazon. Interested in your experience with THIS PARTICULAR SETUP (or maybe the higher model Minis). Does it work fine? Or does it choke? Thx!

ESPN3 Over FIOS on 2011 Mac Mini

American watching the Australian Open on ESPN3 over a Verizon FIOS connection using a 2011 Mac Mini (running Firefox). The picture is almost high definition---it's great. But there's intermittent pausing of a second or two at random times. Does this sound like a connection issue (download speed too slow), a problem originating from ESPN3, a slow processor, the browser, or something else?

Did I just do a clean install? or just a regular install

I have an “early 2009” Mac Mini that I am nursing along. It’s not my main computer but I do use it enough to want to keep it running smoothly. Last year, without putting a lot of thought into it, I upgraded to Mavericks from Snow Leopard. I noticed a hit in speed even though the reviews I was reading after the fact said the opposite should happen. Whatever. So this past weekend, I thought it’d try it again with a clean install. Apple's Yosemite Ate my 2011 Mac Mini - What to do?

First, this is not a gigantic deal. I have all my data backed up via CrashPlan, I do most of my computing on a MBP Retina that's about 6 months old, and I've hardly used the Mini at all in that time. My question is what I can best do with the doorstop my Mac Mini now is. [more inside]

New OSX on an old Mac Mini?

My mother has an early-2010 Mac Mini. Apple says she can upgrade to 10.9.2 for free, but she's not sure if it's a good idea, so she asked me. Her model is on the official compatibility list, but is it a good idea to upgrade? Is there likely to be a noticeable performance hit, or stability issues? Have you personally had a good experience with OSX Mavericks on older Intel macs?

Mac Mini to travel as desktop between two countries? How feasible?

Thanks MeFites for your assistance; now for a Mac Mini question! The Flashdrake is needs a new computer to take to Italy for around 5 months a year; he currently uses an all-in-one desktop PC in Australia running Windows 7 and a 23" screen. Has been using a 17" 2010 laptop now running Windows 8 when travelling to Italy, although doesn't like using it, finds the screen hard to see, and never got a handle on Win8. I could buy a new laptop, or a new desktop to keep overseas, but it seems that getting a Mac Mini and hitching it up to a monitor at either end. While we would still backup, it seems like an elegant solution. He is not familiar with the iOS, but loves his iPad, which he uses when he needs portability when out and about. Is there something that I'm missing here? I imagine that as long as we avoid an expensive Apple monitor (that's possible, right?) it would work well, with be relatively cost effective. Thoughts? What am I missing here?

Networking (maybe?) our Macs

My wife and I use Macs, iOS devices, and Apple networking gear. We're thinking about sharing the desk where my Mac Pro is; as a result, if she needs the desk, and I need a computer, I'd have to use her MacBook Pro. What's the best way to network our computers so that we could do our work from whatever computer we're using, have music and/or programs available, etc.? Some details inside. [more inside]

I suppose I could just go with LPs...

In the process of ripping CDs to a media server (Mac Mini mid-2010), I did an A/B test comparing the sound quality of the Mac setup with my CD player. It did not go well. Currently the line-out headphone jack is just connected to the stereo, but I'm pretty sure that the DAC should be done externally for the improvement in sound. But various reviews seem to indicate that the Mac has high jitter issues with it's optical out. What's the best way to turn my zeroes and ones back into music? [more inside]

I'd like to be a power user, not luser in OSX-land

I'm a Windows systems administrator and power user and an enthusiastic user of Unix/Linux-based operating systems. I have hand edited make files and recompiled linux kernels manually. I know how to do administrative scripting and am a Microsoft products (SharePoint, if it matters) support professional/systems engineer in my job. I am certainly not the geekiest person I know but I'm in the top 5 percent. I am switching to a Mac Mini (Lion Server, specs maxed toward storage) after decades of using Windows laptops/desktops and some Linux machines. I'm prepared for the lack of physical mobility, but I don't feel prepared for not being a power user. What methods/resources would you suggest I could use to get up to speed with being a Mac Mini and OSX Lion power user? [more inside]

Big Death for a Mac Mini

My Mac Mini (bought Oct 2008) has died. I've done all the SMC/PRAM/whatever resettings, and now I've been led to believe it's the logic board. Somehow, I don't have AppleCare (I've gotten it for every other mac I've ever bought). So, my question is whether it's possible/practical to replace the logic board - if that is indeed the problem. If not, how can I put the brick to good, creative use? [more inside]
