My Macbook Air (2012 model) has a bad hard drive, I think. Should I try to take it to Apple for maintenance, or a third-party? [more inside]
Lifelong Windows user, recently got a Macbook Pro. What do I put on it? [more inside]
I have a late-2010 model Macbook Air that I'd like to sell. It's in good condition. What is the easiest, most reliable way for me to sell it, avoid scammers, and just get money in my pocket as painlessly as possible? Thanks!
I lost a lot of documents from the Notes app on my mid-2012 Macbook Air. Is there ANY way they are recoverable? [more inside]
Aaaaaaaahh!!! Friend tried to fix my macbook and erased my hard drive in the process. Now I get a white "stop" symbol when I try logging in, which apparently means that my Mac can't find a valid System Folder to start up from. I'm beyond warranty--how do I get my macbook working again? [more inside]
I’m planning to buy either a used Air or a new MacBook, though I wish I could wait for the next update instead. The Air has been on "Don't Buy" status at MacRumors for months. But a MacBook with comparable performance could be $500 more including the port adapters I’d need. (Is it ok to buy those cheap, from third party manufacturers, and to daisy-chain them?) I was replacing a trackpad in my MacBook Pro (about 2012 model). After I booted back up the keyboard stopped responding. Is there anything obvious I could have unplugged or damaged to make this happen?
I'm looking at the MacBook Retina. I see it only has a USB C port. And there is a dongle from Apple that supposedly allows one to hook this thing up to hdmi. Please tell if you have used this because reviews are all over the place. Bonus: is there a dock or hub that has both ethernet AND hdmi? [more inside]
I'm leaving a job that provided me with a new-ish MacBook Air, and I need to replace it. I'm torn: Macbook, Air, Pro, retina, non-retina, desktop Mac, etc. My entire digital life - home and work -is with Apple, so I am not interested in PCs. Help me overthink a plate of pretty, functional, slightly-overpriced beans. [more inside]
I have a pretty old MacBook pro (probably 7-8 years old) that's very sluggish and glitchy. I'd like to relegate it for the single purpose of running Logic Pro. It currently runs Logic but very slowly and crashes often. Can I like wipe the whole thing somehow and make it do nothing but run Logic well? [more inside]
Normally, when I open up the Finder on my MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012, running OS 10.11.1) in the sidebar to the left of the window, I can see a list of my favorite folders. But lately, sometimes when I open Finder (or when I click "Browse..." to select a file for upload somewhere) the list of Favorites is often missing. Sometimes all that's left is "Media," sometimes it's "Shared." This makes it really difficult to navigate my computer. What is causing this, and how can I fix it?
My MacBook Pro was stolen last night. The disk was encrypted with FileVault and the login passwords were non trivial (good enough for petty thieves though probably not hackers skilled in the art). I told iCloud to lock it down and erase it on first contact. Will the thief and his friends be able to do anything with this machine, or is it just a paperweight at this point? [more inside]
I have a late-2008 MacBook running Yosemite with 2GB of RAM. For years I have had two external hard drives, one for my Surface Pro 2, and one for this Mac, or so I thought. But after plugging my Mac hard drive into my PC to look at the file list, I found that I could no longer mount the hard drive on my Mac (?!). All the files are still there, accessible and editable on my PC. This seems like witchcraft, but I'm sure there is a reasonable explanation. [more inside]
I bought an external battery (20800 mAh) for my oldish Macbook Air. But there is one thing I didn't think of: How do I plug my Macbook into an external battery that only has USB outputs?
I’m thinking about finally making the switch to a Macbook, but an older version. Is there any reason why this is a bad idea? [more inside]
Is there an equivalent to Can You Run It for Macs? I'm tired of never knowing ahead of time what games will run well (enough) on my MacBook Air, especially since I'm partial to graphics-heavy stuff like BioShock and Half-Life. If it helps, here are my details: Mid 2011 MacBook Air Processor: 1.8 Ghz Intel Core i7 Memory: 4 GB 1333 Mhz DDR3
I recently upgraded my MacBook Air to Yosemite. Everything seems to be fine, except for the fact that my iPhones text messages now happen on my computer (I think this is the continuity feature?). Anyway, I want this to stop. Of course, I Googled it before I posted, here, but the fixes that I found, don't appear to be relevant (they were from 2014 and probably from Mavericks). For example, one fix suggested opening the Messages app on your Mac (which I did) and open the Preferences menu, which I don't see. Can anyone help me stop this?? Thanks!
I have a 2006 MacBook Pro and can no longer upgrade the OS. What do I need to do to get it to run Yosemite? [more inside]
I know I want a Mac and not a PC. I'm fairly sure I want a MacBook Pro and not an Air. Help? [more inside]
I'm suddenly in the market for a new MacBook Pro. I'm trying to decide between the Retina and non-Retina options. I remember hearing a while back is that the Retina display would lag or stutter sometimes, especially when switching between Spaces. Is that still true? I use the heck out of spaces and usually have an external monitor as well. If you have a recent rMBP, any testimonials would be much appreciated. Thanks!
I run iTunes Match on four devices: a 2010 iMac, a 2012 iMac, a 2012 Macbook, and an iPhone 5c. One of my favorite playlists has gone missing on the phone, the Macbook, and the 2012 iMac, but not from the 2010 iMac. What's gone wrong and how can I fix it? [more inside]
I'm looking at buying a low-end Macbook for web browsing and MS Office (primarily Powerpoint). Basically, it's coming down to a 2009 or 2010 Macbook, as I'd prefer to run Yosemite, but I want to keep my budget below $500. I have used a friend's 2009 Macbook fairly regularly and I'm happy with its general performance, but I have a few specific questions. [more inside]
Something is pretty clearly wrong, and it seems to be hardware, but it's sporadic enough that it's hard to say what, and I'd rather not have a repair person just guess. [more inside]
My mid-2010 Macbook Pro doesn't handle streaming video or huge Excel files well. Would a comprehensive upgrade solve my problems, or am I better off buying a new computer? [more inside]
1. Is there a way to lock the bookmark bar in Safari? I keep accidentally deleting bookmarks by dragging them into the screen and then they disappear into a puff of air. It's annoying because sometimes I don't notice I have done it and then when I go into Safari the next time I find my bookmark is gone. 2. Is there a shortcut to close all your program and shut down at the same time? I always have to Command +Q each program before I shut down which is annoying. Thanks! Any other unknown secrets or shortcuts for Mac also appreciated!
My roommate's MacBook has suddenly started inserting certain numbers behind certain letters while she's typing (and vice versa). [more inside]
I know everyone asks the "which mac?!" question constantly, but it's a bit of a moving target, isn't it? I am looking to replace my 2008 MacBook (aluminum). I know that the recommendation is to buy either the Retina MBP, or the MBAir. But would I be shooting myself in the foot if I bought a non-Retina MBP? Caveat: Can't really wait months and months for the next and newest--this is my work computer and I can't afford to have it crap out without a replacement. [more inside]
This is for live sound at a party. I need to add a delay to a set of speakers to synchronize them with the main stacks. I don't have a digital console or an effects box capable of this. Could I use something like Audiomulch to do it? How would I set up my 13" MacBook Air so it won't shut don't or cut the audio for several hours? [more inside]
How can I figure out why my MacBook Pro is running so slow, and what can I do about it? [more inside]
I just got a Macbook Pro and would like to be able to draw simple diagrams with shapes and text fields. Are there any Mac programs or apps equivalent to PC's Paint? My search online has brought up Paintbrush which appears to be a very old program. The new ones in the apps store are either really expensive or poorly reviewed if they're free. Thanks!
When I burn a CD, some songs that sound fine in iTunes on my computer will inexplicably have between 3-20 seconds of 'silence' at the beginning, thus causing my car's CD player to skip them if I don't fast forward to the actual music...WTF? (do my best to give some Tech Specs inside!) [more inside]
I want to buy a new Retina Macbook Pro for live performances with Ableton Live. For all other purposes I'd go with the 13-inch model because it is more portable, but I'm worried that 1) the screen will be too small to see all the tracks, or 2) the dual-core processor won't be fast enough compared to the quad-core in 15-inch models. Can anyone speak from experience? Was a 13" good enough?
What's the best way to utilize this busted up macbook (and other bits and pieces from the house) as a media hub/server? [more inside]
My newly obtained MacBook has a minor but annoying behaviour. I have it set up to lock when the display goes to sleep. But when I unlock it, it relocks again. What gives? [more inside]
(Late 2008 Aluminum Unibody MacBook. Currently running Mountain Lion. 2GHz C2D, 2GB 1067 DDR3.) Over the past year or so, it's been slowing down significantly. I'm getting lockups, especially with web browsers (I use Chrome most of the time, Safari on occasion) where I get the pinwheel for quite a while. It takes a decently long time to boot up. And when I open it up, it usually takes a minute or so to fully exit sleep mode and become usable again. [more inside]
My friend's daughter is going off to college to major in media studies. What would be the best MacBook -- new or used -- for her? Ideally it would be able to handle video editing, while still being light. It needs to be as cheap as possible, but it should run Mountain Lion so she can get through most of her college career without having to replace it. What do you suggest? (NB The "Mac" part isn't negotiable.)
I want to buy a new Mac to replace my 2008 Macbook, but I'm overwhelmed by the options. What will best fit my needs? [more inside]
I'm troubled by a mysterious bug on my MacBook Air. It manifests itself when I use Microsoft PowerPoint, but I believe it is a Mac-wide issue. It is extremely rare, impossible to reproduce on demand, and yet - when it strikes, it does so with a vengeance, and embarrasses me in front of a theater full of people. [more inside]
How can I best share a monitor, keyboard and Magic Trackpad between a Mac Pro and a MacBook Pro? [more inside]
I recently got a new MacBook Air and I love it. Sometimes, however, I'm struck by an overwhelming sense of nostalgia for the Apple II I had as a child. Are there classic Mac desktop themes that I can download to rock my Air old skool style?
I've been using Hotmail for ages and I have a bunch of important emails going back two years which I need to organise and print out. Hotmail isn't very good at opening up multiple emails or printing them out so I'd like to download them to my macbook. They are currently sitting in their own folder in my Hotmail account. How do I download this folder and what software should I use?

I'm a web developer / eLearning developer on Windows 7 looking to: 1) Get a Mac because I need to be able to test sites quickly and easily on my own; 2) Get a Windows-bootable unit that can act as my backup machine when my Asus throws a tantrum as it did this week; and 3) Get a reasonably portable Windows-bootable laptop that can handle Photoshop and other resource hogs so that I can work on it at client sites without having to barely squish the Asus (aka "The Clydesdale") into my largest backpack. Ideally, I could get all three in one machine that wouldn't cost the earth. Please join me as I anguish over the MacBook Air, the MacBook Pro, the Mac Mini, and other options. [more inside]
Need advice on how to update an older MacBook Pro with a new hard drive. I have a late-2008 MacBook Pro: 2.53 GHz, 320GB hard drive, 8GM RAM (4GB in two slots). My drive is getting full and I don't have the cash at the moment for a brand new laptop. Should I replace the optical drive with a SSD? Or just upgrade the regular hard drive with a new one with 750GB or 1TB? [more inside]
