Zinio Magazine Reader

A recently purchased iBook comes with Zinio, an application that allows for the onscreen reading of print magazines. I like the concept, and the interface is decent, but their selection is paltry and it all seems a bit too pricey. Still, I might be willing to give it a go. Does anyone use the service regularly? What do you think of it? Is there a comparable service out there that might be better? [more inside]

When Finder goes insane

I'm minding my own business when my Panther 10.3 Finder stops behaving on my Mac. It now takes many times longer to load and won't connect to the Internet, not even with a Comcast wizard. Stella-type modeling app for PC?

Years ago, I had occasion to use a very cool, interactive, drag-and-drop, graphical modeling application for Macs called 'Stella.' Mac-to-PC File Names

I am trying to transfer a large number of files (mostly word documents and excel files) from older Macs (G3s and one '02 iMac) to a Windows Server 2003. The problem is that most of these files were created several years back on OS 9.x and have file names with characters the server does not to recognize as valid. This then stops the transfer of all files, shutting down the whole transfer. Short of going through 1,000s of files one by one to check the names are valid or moving each file over one-by-one, what can I do? Does anyone have any suggestions or experience?

TivoToGo to the Mac

I have a TiVo with the TiVoToGo functionality, with which I can download .tivo files of my recorded shows. I also have about 10 Simpsons episodes I need to catch up on, and a trip starting tomorrow where I'll have some time to watch them. Problem: my main rig is a Powerbook, which doesn't support playing the .tivo files. What's the easiest, fastest way of whipping these files into shape? fixin 0s nine

My PC died and so I took all my CD saved files to place on my Mac. Here's the rub, many of the files (esp. media files) now have truncated and extremely garbled names. Mac OS9 has a 31 character limit, while PCs have a lot more. Is there any tricky way to increase the size of filenames on OS9? Its hundreds of files, so renaming them is out of the question.

Switching from PC to Mac: How much computer do I need?

Apologies for what is undoubtedly a topic that has been covered before, but I can't seem to find a relevant thread. Making the PC to Apple switch. Right now I have a Dell PC from '98, which is creaky and slowly failing and therefore gets only minimal usage. I'm having trouble figuring out how much computer I need. USB Power for Multiple Devices

I'm setting up a new Mac Mini for someone. I needed to plug in a keyboard, a mouse, a printer, and, occassionally, a flash disk. I went with the Apple Pro keyboard because it had two USB ports. I figure, one for the mouse, and one for the flash disk. The printer could go in the other USB port on the machine itself. Well, I try plugging in the flash disk and I'm told there isn't enough power. Is this perhaps a software setting? Surely the flash disk can't use a tremendous amount of power, so can I do something to trick the system? Do I really need to buy a powered USB hub now? I might as well replace the mini and the keyboard with Airport-enabled equivalents, if I can never use both USB ports on the keyboard.
