My Mac Air manifested damage within 6 weeks of purchase, but Apple refuses to take any responsibility (damage isn’t covered under warranty), insisting I caused it. My credit card doesn’t offer insurance. The only option they’ve given me is to pay $500+ to have it fixed. If you were me, what would you do? [more inside]

I have a MacBook Pro from 2009, with a 3.06 GHz Core 2 Duo and 8 GB RAM. I am running Mavericks on it, but I find that it can be slow when it is accessing the disk a lot, and it runs hot. It meets the minimum spec for Mavericks but I am thinking that I am over-stretching it. I am planning to upgrade the 500GB HD to a 1TB hybrid. Would this be better able to run Mavericks or should I think of stepping back to something like Snow Leopard when I change the hard disk?
I'm fed up with Windows and want my next computer to be a Mac—but the product landscape has changed a lot since the last time I seriously considered it. Is an iMac really a competitive machine for someone doing heavy graphics and video work? [more inside]
So I'm trying to decide whether I'd prefer to send MP3s I dictate into a digital voice recorder to an overseas personal assistant to be transcribed or if there's some way to do so with technology. Even if it wasn't 100% exact I could still clean up the files later. So the question is: is there a way to do this? I have the latest version of Dragon Dictate for Mac and the files are digital. Is this possible?
A couple of weeks ago, our office Mac (OS X 10.7.5) started printing everything from Firefox (30.0) in landscape layout (on our HP laserjet CM1312nfi), when we need portrait layout to be the default. [more inside]
Posting for Mr. 58: About 10 years ago I would regularly back-up a couple of household Macs using Retrospect Express (version 4.9). I have a number of these old backup files sitting on a drive and I don't know how to recover the files. As far as I can tell I need a version of Retrospect Express that matches the version thru which the backups were created. I'll also need a Mac running OS 9 on which Retrospect was then running. These are both significant hurdles. I've been occasionally hunting on ebay for a the software with no luck. Does anyone have any advice on what might work? Any other possible solutions to investigate?
I just updated my iMac to 10.9.3 Mavericks. I just discovered that the Midisport 4x4 USB MIDI interface that was using with another Mac doesn't work. It would appear that M-Audio doesn't support 10.9. I tried installing their latest driver for the heck of it but it still doesn't appear to work. Should I just get a new interface or do I have options with this one?
A strange mismatch is going on between my Mac Contacts and my iPhone contacts. Even though I'm using a single Apple ID on both machines, certain contacts exist on the iPhone but not the Mac and vice-versa. I haven't been able to find the explanation for this. [more inside]

I'm getting frequent alerts on my iPhone that my free 5gb of iCloud storage is full. Most of this is from years of photos on my phone--in fact, that's pretty much the only thing on my phone I would care about having backed up. I also think most/all of the images on my phone are already backed up to my computer in Lightroom. Is there a convenient/automatic way to handle what photos stay on my phone and what photos are backed up to iCloud? [more inside]
Some really horrible stuff was going down at work. I took absolutely no part in it, and even acknowledged that it may not be legal. I did this all over email, and even received responses back acknowledging this. I was explicitly threatened that if i wasn’t going to be a part of it, then i was to “forget about it or lose your job”. So recently, they all got busted. And like a bunch of cowards, they all blamed it on me. And because I’m the low girl on the totem pole, it looks like I might have been the one doing all this stuff (without ANY proof). But I have proof! [more inside]
Apple iMac A1225 desktop computers from 2008 came with the notoriously unreliable Nvidia 8800GS graphics card that burns out and turns the iMacs into bricks. Getting a new Nvidia 8800GS graphics card costs about $650 for the part. Getting a used one on costs about $300. Is there a cheap alternative -- something that costs, say, $50? As I understand it, the only alternative is the ATI 4850, which go for about $300 used. Yet I find it hard to believe that there are no other graphics card options.

Some time ago I seemed to have acquired a less-than-legitimate copy of the Mac app Angry Birds 4.0.0. Since updating my Mac to Mavericks I am bothered daily by a notification popping up asking me to update the app today, or be reminded (forever) about doing it tomorrow(s). [more inside]

What is the best way to restore my backup to a new(er) iMac? Can you restore from Time Machine that has a slightly newer OS version than the new(er) computer? Or if you restore from a different backup that is a few days older but that would restore the matching OS, will Time Machine still work properly and let me update the missing recent work? For some recent while, probably since updating the OS X Mavericks, Microsoft Word for OS X keeps coming to the foreground on its own when I'm doing other things, as long as a document is open in Word. If I click out to the Finder, Word makes itself the frontmost program. If I click into the browser, Word comes forward. [more inside]
Several years ago, I created a shell script (or Bash or I don't know what) that establishes a secure shell proxy connection to my home router when I type a short command into Mac OS X's Terminal. Now, I need to edit that script, but I can't find it for the life of me. I've tried searching on likely names looking at both visible and invisible files. I've tried searching for content that I know must be part of the script, but nothing comes up. Rather that executing a command, is there a way to open it in a text editor or display the actual script if I don't know the location of the file on my computer? Is there any other way I could go about finding this? Is there a location that whatever guide I was following would have suggested I save this script? I tried looking in usr/bin but nothing in there seems likely.

Typing is killing me and I have to write a bunch of papers over the next couple of weeks. I have a 2012 MBP (not yet on Mavericks) and could spend ~ $100-150 on some kind of voice-to-text software. Looking for something with a minimal learning curve that will let me work fast. And, whatever else is required to quickly & painlessly navigate multiple documents. Any recommendations? [more inside]
As part of a general digital cleanup (thank you, Heartbleed), I want to perform the long overdue task of backing up my Gmail account (with nearly a decade's worth of email) to my mac. I have two questions: 1) Is gmvault the only option? Is there anything more accessible to a user who hasn't used Terminal with any regularity in eight years, and even then wasn't very proficient using the command line? 2) If gmvault is the only option, or the most accessible option, can someone explain very clearly how to run it? I am unable to successfully follow the instructions on the gmvault website--they seem to assume that I'll intuit some necessary steps, when I actually need every step laid out for me.

I have a Mac (Mavericks) and iPhone (iOS 7), and I use the Mac mail client for both. My email is hosted on Google for domains. Some time in the past few months, my mail has started putting perfectly legitimate mail into my Junk folder. It's not marked as junk- I've turned off junk mail filtering altogether, so I don't even have that option anymore, and by my logic nothing should wind up in my Junk folder at all at this point. How can I get my mail to behave properly? [more inside]

For a while, I've searched for a quirky way to handle delivery of my files online - basically one video file, between 30 - 250 MB, gets uploaded to YouTube for client preview, and to Hightail (formerly YouSendIt) for delivery to put on air. I'd love a simpler, or more automated way, to handle this process on my Mac. [more inside]

I am on a mac, and reluctantly use Firefox right now for some of my work. Firefox on the mac has become so slow and boggy, it is painful to work on. However, I download a lot of jpegs from webpages, and in Firefox, you can have the file automatically open with one click in Photoshop (or any other software), without having to download, go to the finder, and so forth. Is that feature available in either Chrome or Safari? I have done some googling, but can't seem to find anything.
