I want my Mac's iSight camera to capture video, not just still photos. I'm running Tiger (10.4), not Leopard (10.5). Will anything other than upgrading to Leopard let my Mac do this? (Is there any hack or third-party software that lets the iSight act as a video camera under Tiger?)

My wife and two kids and I are not able to renew the lease on the house we're renting in a Maryland suburb of DC (the landlord is selling his other house and moving back into this one), so we're looking to move at the end of August. I've also been contemplating a career change for a while, and as this "opportunity" has dropped in our lap, we're thinking about making a city change as well, that would benefit my intended Mac development career, possibly to the SF Bay Area or Seattle. Aside from price, are there any other reasons why I should not buy a Mac Mini for video editing? I want to learn how to edit video and maybe put together some short films. I can spend $1000-$1300. I've heard the defacto standard is Final Cut Pro. I probably don't need that immediately but if it's the standard i'd like to work up to it. I have two old PCs but no Mac experience.

A Google search reveals several possible ways to convert a WMV file to an mpg, or an avi, or a mov, on a Mac. My question is, for someone who does not have QT Pro and is hoping to do this for free, and has no easy access to any machine other than his G5, what is the best way to convert a wmv into something, anything else (mpg, avi, mov)? This is something of a repeat question (24337) but I'm not facing any DRM and do have access to Final Cut Pro 4.

I am looking for a way, on Mac OS X, to create libraries of digital video clips, and arrange them in various ways into movies which can be burned to DVD. I'm thinking iMovie+iDVD does everything I want, but I'm looking for something that can handle many (hundreds?) large, full resolution files. Anyone have experience with this kind of video cataloging and editing? Is iMovie enough, or do I need a high-end product? It will be used by a relative non-techie (not me).
