I'm very spoiled by the dock on my Mac, and am hoping for a program that provides the same functionality on my Windows 7 machine. [more inside]
I'm using iBooks to read ebooks on my Mac and iPhone. But I generally don't buy my ebooks from Apple, and iBooks will only wirelessly sync books that one bought from the iBooks store. If I want to copy a new ebook from my Mac to my phone, I have to connect the two over USB and use iTunes to sync. Ugh. There has to be a better way. What apps should I be using to get better wireless sync? [more inside]
I have a very basic (I think) requirement infrequently where I need to slightly modify a picture (usually a line drawing or a jpg of an event layout or similar) so that I can extract the track map from it. I keep bouncing between software that doesn't do enough to overwhelmingly complicated and too involved to do quickly. Please translate what is available in my own perspective please. I am open to the possibility that I am outside the realms of simple software, but am ever hopeful. [more inside]
I cannot seem to find a good app that will let me: 1) have recurring tasks 2) allow me to check them off as done (like disappear or strike or some other indicator) 3) presented in calendar form (not a "reminders" list). I don't ask for much. I have checked out many many free apps, none of which accomplish what I want. I'm sure this gem is a paid app and I will gladly fork over based on a suggestion, knowing my criteria. I have yet to find one that has all three of these requirements spelled out. Thanks!
I'm looking for an app on Mac OS X (Mavericks preferred. Can't use Yosemite). The app would simply display an image with adjustable transparency such that a second app could be positioned behind this image-displaying app, and I could see the image overlaid. [more inside]
How can I simply print an envelope or two from my Mac to any printer that can handle envelopes? I'm printing directly on the envelope, but it's a standard #10 envelope--no labels, no odd sizes. I'd like USPS barcodes. I've got a copy of EasyEnvelopes and I've been trying to print from it, but nothing happens on my printer and I can't update it because they charge for it now. Printing other docs works fine. [more inside]
I love Guitar Toolkit on my iPhone. Specifically, the scale and chord features. I want the same functionality on my desktop monitor so I can see more than 5 frets at a time. [more inside]
So I have a voice recorder. Which I use because LA and traffic. And I have Dragon Naturally Speaking 3.0 for Mac. The question is whether it's possible to use them together to transcribe dictation. For my purposes it doesn't have to be completely right. It just has to be a scratch draft to fix later. IS such a thing possible? And IF so...how?
Font Book isn't burly enough to handle my thousands of fonts, and it has now crashed twice. Its default of loading fonts as active contributes to its crashing, I believe. (I've taken it to the Apple Store, etc., so please don't tell me how to get Font Book to work.) I've committed to buying some new font software. I'm currently looking at FontExplorerX Pro and Suitcase Fusion. Please share your advice on those two, or any other font management systems that are effective and not crazy expensive. Thank you! (I used to use suitcase back in the oughts. Obviously the world is a different place.)
I'm looking for software to read Blu-ray discs on a Mac. [more inside]
Typing is killing me and I have to write a bunch of papers over the next couple of weeks. I have a 2012 MBP (not yet on Mavericks) and could spend ~ $100-150 on some kind of voice-to-text software. Looking for something with a minimal learning curve that will let me work fast. And, whatever else is required to quickly & painlessly navigate multiple documents. Any recommendations? [more inside]
I'm writing a book that will contain around 200 photographs and their captions. What program should I use to write it? Microsoft Word is annoying when it comes to photos (and everything else). I like Scrivener but am not sure it's the best for a photo-heavy, text-light project. I'm on a Mac.
I'm looking for flashcard software for my Mac, with several caveats. I'd like to create the decks as text files and sync them with Dropbox, like you can with Flashcards Deluxe. If there's a Mac app that will use the same files as Flashcards Deluxe, that would be perfect. Thanks!

If I've upgraded PHP on my Mac, should I now avoid all OS X Updates? I'm hosting a website on a Mac mini in a datacenter, and some of my software required a newer version of PHP than what's included out-of-the-box in OS X Mountain Lion. I keep getting the notification saying system updates are ready, and restart to install. But I'm scared it's going to overwrite my PHP upgrades and break everything. And it took me an insanely long time to get the PHP upgrade to work properly and play nicely with OS X Server.

I recently got a Mac mini server hosted in a datacenter in order to host my CRM server, and now I'm wondering what other useful things I can do with it. [more inside]
Back in the very late 90s a friend passed along a copy of a configurable Mac program that acted as sort of a screen saver (but I don't think that was its primary purpose) that produced different kinds of firework-like vector graphics that moved and changed in time to whatever music you had playing on the computer at the time. There were a number of variables you could control, including the design of the graphics, and maybe the colors, too. I remember on a couple of occasions needing to get a new copy and the only place I ever found it was on Macster; I'm almost positive it wasn't commercially available, but it was probably shareware. I want to say it was German, but I may be thinking of the game Oxyd. Does anyone remember what this program was, and if there is a modern-day equivalent for Mac?
My (small) company provides services in people's homes. We'd like to use electronic maps to plan technician routes and better understand where our clients are geographically. What (Mac-compatible) software or web service might help with this? [more inside]

I'm currently looking at adopting Freshbooks or Kashoo, and would be interested in experiences with either, or other recommendations. Context: I'm a few years into freelancing (across a few different industries) and I'm working on improving my accounting, with the goals of easier tax time, smoother day-to-day operations, and better information about cashflow and budgeting. Right now I use Toggl for time tracking, and Mint for expense tracking and budgeting; I like Toggl but I'm not married to it, and Mint is starting to drive me absolutely nuts. I do invoicing and bookkeeping manually. Also welcome would be general tips on bookkeeping and accounting for small businesses / freelancers. I'm on a Mac, in Canada.
I'd like to produce an offset-print-quality map, modeled after airline flight path maps, which graphically reproduces hundreds of point-to-point connections: in this specific case, between radio transmitters and reception locations. What software is capable of producing some variation on this, perhaps by putting in GPS coordinates? (OS X please.)
I am looking for a wonderful timer program for Mac (OS X 10.7.4 +). It needs to have a Cocoa GUI (meaning a GUI that isn't ugly, and isn't unnecessarily complicated), the ability to run multiple timers, and the ability to name timers with a decent amount of detail. Sound is an important feature, too. Command line alternatives are also cool, but not ideal. More information inside: [more inside]

Renter's Remorse Filter. I moved into a new place and I cannot stand it (upstairs neighbor sounds like an elephant, asinine condo regulations, horrible parking, etc.) Is there a countdown timer utility (Mac OS 10.6) or email service that I can use to count down the weeks I have left to live here? Ideally, I would like to receive an email at the end of every week, saying I have X number of weeks left.

I can't seem to get SheepSaver running on OS X Lion. I'm trying to get Starship Titanic working as per the instructions in this post but the sheepsaver.app that comes bundled with the Mac OS 9 boot image just bounces for 10 seconds or so and crashes. It's kind of a stretch but I was wondering if anyone on here has gotten SheepSaver to work, various sources I came across while googling seemed to indicate it should work fine.
