I have a ton of old classic Mac software and bits of hardware that I need to clear out of here. But, is tossing it into a landfill really the only way? [more inside]
After 10 years almost exclusively using Apple products we are thinking about moving back to a PC environment but are weighing up how to and if it is worth the drama. [more inside]
I’m printing tons of text and I need something that’s mac compatible, wireless, and prints like the wind. It would be great if it didn't print to the same tray that feeds it.
Can a WD My Cloud work with PC and Mac simultaneously? [more inside]
I have a client who has requested delivery of a video with timecode in the audio track. I know there are cameras that record timecode on an audio track, but I haven't found a way to generate such a track in post with Creative Cloud applications. The source video didn't come with an audio track. [more inside]
I have to return my Mac desktop to the job I just left. I've been careless about using it as my home computer too, downloading photos, looking at my bank accounts, etc. Is there a fast and easy way to delete everything on there? [more inside]
I'm pretty sure this has been asked before, but I can't find anything within the last few years. I'm looking for a writing program that looks clean but has some basic editing features. TextEdit is too basic but Word is too fussy. Any new, good programs these days? Must be available for Mac. Fancier features are OK as long as it doesn't start looking or feeling like Word. Cost isn't so important.
My Macbook Air (2012 model) has a bad hard drive, I think. Should I try to take it to Apple for maintenance, or a third-party? [more inside]

With year- end tax prep, I am prompted to wonder if there's a better way to track receipts than I've been doing, using Paperless and a scanner. [more inside]
I need a reliable, robust app (or way) to upload an enormous amount of photos from my Mac to my Flickr Pro account. Suggestions or ideas? [more inside]
I have two Mac laptops. I like Arq, which I have just started using with Google Drive. I want to set up Arq so that I can restore the files on my first Mac to the drive on my second Mac, or vice versa. This is proving a little complicated for a couple of reasons: [more inside]
I upgraded to Sierra on my iMac. Immediately the printer and computer couldn't communicate and I couldn't scan (printing worked, though). After many long and many conversations with Mac and HP tech support, we figured out a workaround. Now, I just noticed that when I print multiple page Word documents, it only prints 2-sided. The Print dialogue box no longer has the two-side box option. I've again talked to Apple and HP and have looked online into known issues between Sierra and Word, all to no avail Any ideas, anyone? Thanks.
I have my photos stored on iCloud, but have it set to 'optimize storage' so it only downloads the thumbnails and stores the full photos on the cloud. If I backup my computer using Time Machine, do my full photos get backed up? [more inside]
Lifelong Windows user, recently got a Macbook Pro. What do I put on it? [more inside]
One new iMac. There were two old iMacs, separate user accounts. How to add the separate external time machine backups on this new computer? [more inside]
I have a late-2010 model Macbook Air that I'd like to sell. It's in good condition. What is the easiest, most reliable way for me to sell it, avoid scammers, and just get money in my pocket as painlessly as possible? Thanks!
Can I format/partition it for both systems without losing all the data I've already backed up on it? [more inside]
Can a 4k 21.5 inch monitor do 1600x900 crisply? The standard 21 inch resolution is 1920x1080, which means DPI 102, and that's unusable for me. UI elements are too small for me to see. I could scale it to 1600x900, but for a standard monitor, it gets fuzzy. Does a 4k monitor solve this issue? I'm using a late 2014 Mac Mini (i7 3.0GHz, 16GB RAM). [more inside]
I have some files in common formats - .doc, .pdf, .xls, etc. - on my hard drive. They were created around 2010. I can no longer open them, but I'd like to. Over time, the files have been migrated between both Mac and PC laptops (at work, hence the mix), and at least one of these (the PC) crashed and had to be recovered. [more inside]
I use a 2006 Mac Pro. It's so old that I'm stuck with OS X 10.6.8 and lots of apps (even Firefox!) won't update any more. If I buy a second-hand Mac, am I at risk of (say) 2009 Macs falling out of OS support life while 2013 Macs are still supported, or is the architecture effectively identical from the OS' perspective? [more inside]
In the past week or so, a few aspects of my Mac's security setup have changed without my (knowing) intervention. 1. I've got my Mac set to lock itself after 60 minutes of inactivity. That is no longer happening; 2. Safari is bugging me to enter my password when I launch it. [more inside]
I received a voicemail via email through our office phone system. I double-clicked the attachment to play it in iTunes (Mac) and it's a legitimate voicemail. However, there is a lot of background noise (coffeeshop ambience, some singing). After the voice message finishes playing, the background audio continues and doesn't stop until iTunes is closed. Has anyone experienced this or knows what is causing it? [more inside]
We have a Macbook Air running Sierra 10.12, upgraded within the last 10 weeks or so. Since then we can't keep free space on the hard drive. It just continually disappears, to the point where the drive is almost full and the computer stops functioning properly. I can't find the source of the problem, except that the space used by "System" files is just growing and growing -- today it's at 150GB! Are there any serious Mac experts out there who can help me? [more inside]
I have an iMac where the internal USB controller has gone flakey. It corrupts photos from SD cards, and just recently seems to have messed up my backup drive (also USB). The repair place is suggesting it will cost $800 to replace the logic board (parts + labor). Since everything else works well, I'd like to salvage the machine. [more inside]
I have a Mac. It's not very old (spring 2015), but I have used Migration Assistant from Mac to Mac every 2-4 years for a very, very long time. And therein lies the question. [more inside]
I have SharePoint 2010 sites, with lists, libraries and InfoPath forms. SharePoint is only worth a goddamn in Internet Explorer, as you probably know. I have a bunch of Mac users who do not like to use a virtual machine. These are senior-type Mac users, however. What can I do to bridge the gap? [more inside]
I just tried to set up Apple Mail on my laptop and it insists on downloading the whole !@#$% archive for every account I link to it. Googling around, I get the sense this is a common complaint. Is there some kind of Apple Mail or Outlook alternative that will let me configure a Gmail account and an Exchange account to download all NEW mail but not any OLD mail? I'd be willing to pay for it. I don't need much functionality--mostly something that'll work when I'm offline. A Mail or Outlook clone that doesn't insist on this downloading-and-storing-1.1GB-of-email nonsense would be fine with me. [more inside]

Aaaaaaaahh!!! Friend tried to fix my macbook and erased my hard drive in the process. I'm beyond warranty--how do I get my macbook working again? [more inside]
Google-able information about this problem appears to be fragmented and riddled with wise-guyage and pop-ups, so here I am: Which new-to-be-bought printer would work seamlessly with OS X 10.4 Tiger? Emphasis on "seamless" because [more inside]
What's the best way to plug my electric guitar into my Mac to record (I'm using GarageBand) and what's the best way to output from my Mac to an amp/PA (say if I'm using GarageBand's virtual effects to play live)? [more inside]
I'm a graduate student and the research project I am working on requires me to analyze articles and pictures from old newspapers. I took photos of what I needed, and then saved the info about each one (date, author, title, page number, etc) in iPhoto. Sadly, when iPhoto "updated" to the newer version, this data was lost. I am looking for a more reliable way to store this data alongside the photos. Right now I just have it written in notebooks the old fashioned way - there has to be a better option. I want to attach the info directly to the photo so that if I switch computers or applications, it will still be in the file for good. I hope this makes sense, I am not great with technology.
I didn't ask it to, but my iPhone lately keeps trying to download more music to its library. Any clues? [more inside]
I use Outlook for work on my Mac (El Capitan 10.11.6). There seems to be no way to make the computer have Outlook be the default client, so this is a last-ditch attempt to find an answer. According to Microsoft, in theory you just open the Mail app and then use Mail's preferences to choose Outlook as the default. It doesn't work. You can tell Mail to use Outlook at the default, but it reverts back to Mail almost immediately without you telling it to. What am I missing? [more inside]
So I took a bunch of photos on a trip to Japan and the time and date are wrong on all of them because of a mistaken camera setting. Is there a way to change the metadata for the files somehow all at once instead of one at a time?
Yesterday I opened up my laptop to discover it had crashed. When I rebooted, a new mystery icon was in the menu bar. Looks like a little square speech bubble with another square in the middle. [more inside]

The hard drive in my 2011 27" iMac was failing, and has been replaced. It's a 1TB Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 and I was told to try recovering the data myself first. But Googling has only left me more confused. Walk me through this? [more inside]
I’m running OS X10.11.6. A week or so ago a new folder showed up on my hard drive, labeled only with a tilde (~). I have no idea where it came from, and can't get rid of it. [more inside]
After a lot of research I think that the ASUS ZenBook Pro UX501VW 15inch 4K Touchscreen Laptop is everything she needs and costs the same amount as the 13" Macbook Pro she would buy, but I'm worried about Adobe compatibility. [more inside]
I’m planning to buy either a used Air or a new MacBook, though I wish I could wait for the next update instead. The Air has been on "Don't Buy" status at MacRumors for months. But a MacBook with comparable performance could be $500 more including the port adapters I’d need. (Is it ok to buy those cheap, from third party manufacturers, and to daisy-chain them?) Compiling files is much faster on my SSD-equipped laptop than on my iMac with a traditional hard drive. I'd like my desktop machine to blaze like the laptop. But I wonder: would this happen with just an external SSD drive and all my files moved over to it? Or would I need to replace the internal drive?
Half the apps on my iMac that sync with iCloud have corrupt or missing .plist files that prevent them from launching. Signing out of iCloud, restarting, and logging back in to reset synced data did not resolve problems. Running First Aid on drive returns no errors. What next? [more inside]
I have a slideshow of 392 photos in iPhoto version 8.1.2. I would like to show these photos tomorrow at a local event where I will have a table/booth but where I will not have electricity. My daughter took a songwriting class at school this year and they used Logic. Her laptop is a Macbook Air. Is there something similar or is compatible we can get for her Mac? She wants to make mostly dance type music. Is it worth getting a keyboard to go with the laptop? And do we want to think about getting something that she can record with? (she also has an acoustic guitar.) Any advice for the budding electronic musician would be appreciated!
