I'm flying into LaGuardia at 10:30 on Friday morning. I'm staying with a friend in Brooklyn but won't be able to get into his apartment until the evening. I would like to spend the day in Manhattan, but will have a large rolling suitcase (like the biggest standard size one you can buy) that I don't particularly want to tote around all afternoon. Where can I leave it? [more inside]

Question for frequent flyers: have airlines' new pay-to-check-a-bag policies significantly affected how much baggage passengers are trying to carry on board? To the point where it's gone from just aggravating to completely !%@#!*#@ impossible? [more inside]

I'm staying in Berkeley and catching a late flight out of Oakland on my last day. I'd like to stash my bag for the day but the airport left luggage service has closed due to their remodel. I've found a past discussion of SFO options but was curious whether anyone had east bay recommendations or tips for BART-convenient storage in downtown San Francisco since I'm likely to spend the day there and won't be anywhere near SFO

Can anyone suggest a decent smallish day bag to lug around while visiting a big city? We'll base ourselves at the hotel and would just need one to lug around for the day--something big enough for a couple guide books, maybe a light jacket, etc. Something that is relatively inexpensive, comfortable, and okay for both a man and woman to carry around would be ideal.

We are taking our minivan with four kids, two adults, to the coast in Oregon. My wife and I have an unresolved disagreement about which is best--a trailer, or a roof top carrier--for hauling all of our camping junk that won't fit in the vehicle. Please enlighten me about trailers. [more inside]

I'm flying to New York in the summer and have heard from recent visitors that they have had any padlocks or other security devices attached to their luggage removed/broken and replaced when going through security checks. How common is this and should I bother to lock up my luggage when I travel to/from the U.S.?

My wife and I are starting to plan our 1 month+ trip to Europe for this upcoming summer and I was wondering if anybody could recommend a comfortable, compact, relatively inexpensive backpack. We are going to be packing pretty light, as we will only have one bag each, and it needs to be small enough for carry-on luggage.

My sister had the worst travel experience the other day, resulting in an airline losing her carry-on bag. Her carry-on! She's been playing mad phone-tag with ambivalent airline personnel, but I'm wondering if anyone has any experience or advice that would help her. [mi, natch]

I just bought an overpriced piece of luggage and as a method to make sure it's easily recognizeable (like all modern luggage it's plain black fabric) and lower it's inherent value i want to place a sticker on it that says "This is not your bag" in as many languages as possible. I just don't trust babelfish not to make my bag say "bag yours not" so i'm hopeing i can steal some of that bilingual knowledge out there.

In about a week, my boyfriend and I are flying from Chicago to Boston. He plans to play with his band while he's there, and so would require his bass (electric). This is not something we would want to check, for risk of damage or theft. But I don't think that sort of thing is allowed as carry-on. What can we do? I know that a lot of locked items are forced open nowadays for security checks. Does anyone have any experience with transporting instruments via air? We're taking ATA by the way.
