When Harry Met Sally...to music.

Which songs have as their theme, "Gosh, you were there all along, and I never noticed you but gee....you're, you're...the one!" You know, the fell in love with your best friend, right under your nose, types. I can't think of any but I'm sure they're there. Actually, I can only think of REO Speedwagon's "Can't Fight This Feeling." I'm asking for, er, a friend.

Teacher, Mother, Secret Lover

Give me some songs about lovin' your TV. Not necessarily a certain show or celebrity, but about just being attached to the boob tube. I've tried googling this, but I can only find love songs from television. My friends are stumped, and my own CD collection reveals nothing. So please, metafilter, help me out here.

Songs about soulmates? Always looking for the proverbial perfect love song, and thought that maybe these threads could use an update.

Hoping for indie pop/rock songs, but others are welcome as well.

Not the Pretenders, either

SongFilter: Sad love song, big band era. I was shopping in Galena, IL Saturday and heard a song at a tchotchke shop that I really, really liked. But I couldn't listen to all of it because my nieces were being brats. Tonight, googling what I remember fails me.

It was a female singer, with a sweet soprano voice, addressing her lost lover. There was a bit about being out in public and seeing other men, but this was all "pretending", because nobody made her feel like him. The song made the point that a lot of people pretend and they shouldn't settle for it.

There was a male response in the song, with a line about swallowing or burying "pride" and both voices sang a line, separately, saying two people who love each other so much shouldn't hurt each other this way. The singers end up agreeing to give it another try, even though it's been a while.

The song seemed to be structurally complex, but I admit it's just barely possible I'm merging two songs that played one after the other. I don't think so, though.

The music was big band, maybe swing, but generally a lot of wistful horns. Maybe it was too spare to really be big band. Heck, maybe it was a modern revival.

Anyway, I've googled like crazy, and all I come up with are songs by Yes and Linkin Park. It isn't H.I.M., the Bee Gees, Clapton, or any of the others that turn up with variations. Interestingly, with the exception of "The Great Pretender", most of the hits on "pretending" are about lovers pretending to go on but knowing they have to break up. That song and this one are about people pretending they're OK after breaking up.

Indie Rock Love Songs

IndieRockLoveSongFilter: What are some good indie rock love songs? I'm making a CD for a certain someone, yet... I love all kinds of music, but especially indie stuff (more recent stuff). So does she. But the problem is that most of the music I like and listen to is usually depressing, especially the stuff about love. Like that song "Engine Driver" from the Decemberists, or anything by Wilco or Broken Social Scene or whoever; it just makes me want to lie face down on the floor and not move. Not exactly the music I'm looking for... I'm looking for the stuff that will make two sarcastic cynics feel sentimental and hopeful but not cheesy. So if you know of any good love songs that strike that middle ground between gut-wrenchingly depressing and saccharine indiepop, I would very much appreciate it. Better yet, if you had to make a CD for someone you loved, what would you put on it? Genre isn't really important in the end, but I had to pick a theme. Ok, I don't like country.

Some songs I have on my short list: "Digital Love" by Daft Punk; "Run Into Flowers" by M83; "Postcard of a Painting" by Maximo Park; "To Be Alone With You" by Sufjan Stevens (as you can see these songs don't necessarily flow together well, but the theme is overridingly digital because we first met online a few years back).

If any other information would help, she's multilingual, likes Shakespeare and we are both pretty young.

That little bitty teeny weeny thing they call the love bug...

Love songs for the jaded but hopeful. Help me find some music to emphasize the high I'm on, without lapsing into irrational swooning over that certain someone. You know that feeling when you've first clicking when a person, and you've just realized that this person you like, well they like you too? The happy reckless bouncy joy that seems unbounded and just makes you want to throw back your head and laugh and dance? Yeah. I'm there now, and I want some good music for it. My music collection is short of songs that aren't about dysfunctional or obsessive love, so I turn to you for help!

However, what I'm trying not to do is to lose myself in a classic "I need you I've got to have you or I'll die" swoonfest. I'm too jaded, been hurt too recently, and need to keep it... low-key. Just to give a taste of what I'm looking for, I found myself driving 100 on the free way to Livin' la Vida Loca the other morning, much to my eternal shame.

Got anything else that will make me feel as happy celebrating the buzz and the possibilities without making me into some gothic romance character?

Valentine's Day Mix

I'm working on a Valentine's Day mix CD for that special someone, and was hoping some of you MeFites might have some suggestions. [More Inside] I'm trying to compile the most depressing or inappropriate collection of love or anti-love songs I can find. I haven't looked through my entire collection yet, but here's some songs I'm thinking of off the top of my head:

Billy Bragg - Everybody Loves You Babe
Beck - Lost Cause
Ben Folds Five - Song for the Dumped
Morrissey - You're the One for Me, Fatty
Juliana Hatfield - Ugly or Everybody Loves Me But You (Haven't decided which yet)
Matthew Sweet - Someone to Pull the Trigger

My friend recommended Flushed From The Bathroom Of Your Heart by Johnny Cash. Any more suggestions?
