My husband of five months and I have different attitudes towards money. He’s more money conscious that I am, at least, that’s what he calls it. I think of his “money-consciousness” as a cross between minor cheapness and money obsession. I am right now at a crossroads in the relationship and I don’t know how to solve it or whether I should even continue it. [more inside]

I recently bought a paperback book from an antique shop. The book's called The Mystery of Love, Courtship and Marriage Explained, and it was written by Henry J. Wehman, published by Wehman Bros. But there's no copyright date! Anywhere! In any form! The cover looks like it's a "newer" edition (1920's or so) of an older writing, since the writing uses language and refers to customs that seem outdated even for the early 20th century. There are details such as proper flirting with your parasol, the inappropriateness of women's rights meetings, marrying outside of your social class, calling your husband "Mister" instead of his first name, etc. The word "hugging" (not the act itself) is even called a vulgarity. So, it's old. But how old? How can I find out when this was actually written? Google turns up nada. [more inside]

I asked him to marry me. I live in a very open-minded, liberal and culturally aware area. To my surprize, the general reaction to learning about the engagement is one of complete shock. People seem so amazed that I was bold enough to get down on one knee, ring in hand, and propose to him. Which led me to the question of, how common is it nowadays, for the woman to ask the man to marry? [more inside]

Should I stay with my Clinically Depressed partner or take a chance on love? My wife and I have been together for 10 years. She has Clinical Depression and some physical health problems (nothing extremely serious, but they do effect often effect our sex life.) She is on medication for her Depression, which helps her function. However, it is not a "cure" - it just makes her less depressed and depressed less often (which is normal for C.D.) Recently I met another woman, and yes, have fallen in love . . . [more inside]

As I look at the strewn wreckage of my past relationships and think about why the ones that seemed like "the one" never quite turned into the one, I wonder what is it that makes a man decide he wants to get married. Do men start thinking I want something more serious this time? Or does it hit them like a meteor out of the blue? Or is it (as they often claim on the 1st or 39th date) a slow slow burn (get to know ya and then 7 years later, lets move in)? Please explain the male psyche to me.

The girl I love is leaving our work team, and before she goes I want to buy her an engagement ring. I think she may be the one. The trouble is that (a) I don't know what kind of rings she likes, (b) I don't know what size ring she wears, (c) I don't think she'll say 'yes', and (d) I love her more than she loves me. Quite possibly my love for her is unrequited. We're both professionals in our 30s, we've had a couple dates, and she knows I care about her. She doesn't know how much though. What are your thoughts and suggestions?

Three months ago, my then-girlfriend and I broke off a 2.5-year relationship. We were doing it long-distance for the entirety of it, though that never hurt us. Two summers we lived together, too. We had started to fight a lot later—usually about stupid things—and basically just started to drive each other nuts while we were apart. When we were together in person, things were wonderful, but we had to support each other across the hundreds of miles, too. It was a mutual break-up for the most part: she wanted to take a month off, but I said it was inappropriate for us to pretend to be with each other when we're really trying to get away. This may have been the biggest mistake of my life. [more inside]
