Flying tips with a baby

My Wife and our 1 year old and I are about to embark on a 3 leg trip. I'm after generic airport/airline tips for babies but I have a few specific things to address. I'd love to be able to have some sort of priority check-in. I am a Qantas Frequent Flyer and I'm flying oneworld airlines, but I don't have any of the exclusive club access or platinum cards or anything like that. We just have regular economy tickets with JAL and American Airlines. Are there any services that allow us to bypass the long arduous wait to check in?

We have 5.5 hours in Narita airport. If there is a lounge we can access during that time I'm keen to find out. I looked into priority pass but as we are leaving Sunday I don't have time to get it processed and have the card in my hand. Any tips for lounge access in terminal 2 of Narita airport?

And any other airport/airline tips greatly appreciated. I've read the other links I could find on this topic which were very handy (change of clothes for us! Brilliant!)

Where to Lounge after the Meyerhoff?

Hey Baltimore Mefites! I need your recommendations for a chill place to grab a drink after a show at the Meyerhoff. I'm going to the early Jon Stewart show at the Meyerhoff in Baltimore on Friday. I'd like to find a place to grab a drink or two afterwards. Looking for a chill loungey vibe, nothing too loud or dancey, no meat markets, not too grungey. I'd also prefer something walkable, but I'm fine with driving and parking to get to the right place.

Best lounges in Boston?

I'm looking for recommendations for lounges in Boston for a birthday party with around 10-15 guests. We'll all be in our early 20s.

Ideally, the place will play livelier music but not blast it to the point where I have to shout to have a conversation.

Price range is pretty flexible. In terms of location, closer to the financial district is preferable, so nothing near Allston, brookline, etc.

This would be for a Saturday night between 8 and 11 PM and I'd like to be able to make reservations.

A decent sized crowd is appreciated, as we don't want to feel like we're the only group of people in the place. Basically, we're all tired of how impossible it is to converse with music blaring at a club, so while we don't mind ending the night at one, we'd like to drink some dranks at a lounge after dinner and before hitting up a club.

Thanks!

All I want for Xmas is airport peace, quiet and wifi

How can one keep sane with a 6 (six) hour layover in Detroit airport during the Xmas travel rush? Arriving late afternoon, a few days before Christmas. Departing late evening on a flight to Europe. Carrying a laptop and an android.

Looking for:
- wifi, either free and/or reliable
- quiet spaces and places
- power socket

Shot-in-the-dark less likely options, but would also be nice:
- light and healthy meal option (no fast food, fries, similar)
- decent tea
- cat petting or viewing place (as will be missing mine)

Do these exist (together) in any specific non-lounge areas? If not, is there is a cheap / cost effective way of getting lounge access? Infrequent flyer (a few times a year).

Thank you.

The Second Most Important Seat in the House

Tall Person Furniture Filter: Help me find a recliner! Howdy all - I'm 6'4" with a decent chunk of that in my torso and pretty nasty lower back problems (every few months I'll twist the wrong way or sit in a bad position and won't be able to straighten/stand well for a few days).

My first-apartment-couch is pretty well worn through after many years of faithful service, and I'd like something that I can sit in for more than 20 minutes without getting back spasms. I'd also like something tall enough that I can put my head back and rest it on something instead of curling my shoulders around the top and half-resting on the wall behind the couch.

With the space we have, I'm actually looking into a recliner and tried sitting in some of the Ekornes Stressless chairs - they're comfortable, but all very short - with the small ones, the back comes about up to my shoulder blades.

Any other options? I'd be willing to get a couch, but am looking to spend under $2k which puts me in the recliner range I think. I'd also value quality of construction over style. Most of the furniture in the house is oak or old growth pine, very little veneer/plastic/metal.

I've also looked through Craig's List, Ebay, etc, but am somewhat wary about used ergonomic furniture - I know that I don't particularly pay attention to how hard I flump on the sofa and can't really be shocked that after the better part of a decade, 200 lbs dropped onto it on a semiregular basis has eroded my couch springs...

Does there exist a fancy karaoke venue in Manhattan? I'm turning 31 and I want to have a birthday party at a karaoke bar. I would also like to dress up. I'm thinking something like... a karaoke cocktail lounge. I don't want to rent a private room.

Does this exist? Am I completely nuts? If it doesn't exist, is there anything even approximating it? I don't want to go to a divey or fratty karaoke bar.

Help find Jazz cover of Dance song

Please help me find the Jazz/lounge version of this dance song! So recently I was in a coffee shop and I heard a girl cover the song "Hello" by Martin Solveig and Dragonette (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LnET4RKXx5k) except it definitely wasn't a dance song. Had a major lounge/jazz feel to it. I've been searching all over google for it and was wondering if any music buffs know what I'm talking. If it helps, I heard it at Waves Coffee Shop (maybe we can locate its playlist).

What was that music webapp I had on my iPod? Help me remember the site I had saved to my homescreen a while ago. I'm fairly sure it was a webapp and not a proper app. I seem to remember the name for the icon was shortened to a two-letter acronym; I thought it was DI for digitalinspiration.com but googling that shows I was wrong. I'll try to describe it anyway: the app had a series of square, colourful icons down the left-hand side, not unlike the style to the iTunes gift card drawings. Each icon represented a category; I definately remember 'lounge', and the others were mostly dance/electronic music related genres like house, groove etc. probably hip-hop stuff too. Definately a cool and groovy site.

Help me turn my apartment into a den of sin.

Music to make out by? (trippy, downtempo, lounge feel) I've been trying to cobble together a few hours' worth of tracks with a smooth, sexy, electronic lounge feel to them. I'm not really sure what genre exactly to classify this stuff as, but I've always thought of it as basically "make-out music". The kind of thing that you can put on when you've brought a special someone back to your house for the first time after a night on the town, ostensibly to "have some wine" or "watch a movie". Or just something to listen to when it's late at night and you're playing video games or cruising the web and just want something smooth and warm sounding to put on in the background.

The sort of feel that I'm looking for is very warm, very relaxing, but energetic and exciting in a dark and sexy way. It's hard to describe, let me hit you with a couple of tracks:

Bitter:Sweet – Heaven
Lovage – Stroker Ace

OK, so a little corny perhaps, but hopefully you get the idea. I'm looking mainly for specific tracks here rather than albums, since I find that it's hard to get a whole album of songs without there being one or two in there that just kill the mood. Of course, if you know of an album (or even an artist) that's just solid gold, I'd love to hear about it.

So, MeFites, hit me with your smoothest, sexiest cuts! Show me what you've got – I know you've got it, you sexy, sexy people you.

Where in the world... er NYC is my birthday celebration?

Looking for fun, chill lounges/bars (with lots of single guys) in NYC to celebrate my 21st! Also, ID issues! Straight female turning 21 this weekend and I'm looking for suggestions of great lounges/bars to celebrate!

I'm looking for the perfect place and I just can't find it! I've been to many many bars around the East Village/Union Square area but still haven't found a fabulous one. I really like Revival because there are so many places to hang out-- downstairs bar, upstairs seating area, outside terrace but whenever I've been there, it seems like its mostly couples and friends hanging out. My friend and I are always looking for new bars where tons of nice single guys (preferably working professionals, not students) hang out so Revival would NOT be it. (Oh, and I've been to Nevada Smith's several times and the guys did not approach me or my friend, as they seemed more focused on "da game")

I'm open to location. It can be anywhere from West Houston (although that unfortunately includes NYU bars that I want to avoid) to 60th street. Is 60th the end of midtown? If yes, then 60th.

No extravagant drink prices, and would prefer if the establishment served food- and I don't mean pretzels or peanuts. But I can deal if the perfect place doesn't serve food. I want to be able to sit. No covers. Again, must have lots of friendly single (professional) guys.

Also, I have a NYS drivers permit that has the big red 'Under 21' on it and will not be paying to get it replaced. (It does not say 'under 21 until X date'. It just says under 21) Will this be an issue in getting in? Are any bouncers actually going to look at my birthdate? Are they going to bother to do the math? I'll be sending all my friends Facebook invites telling them what bar to go to and if the bar doesn't let me in, I'll be celebrating my birthday alone! I'm really scared about that because I look several years younger than I actually am. I tried calling some bars yesterday to ask if my ID would be a problem and some said that they would not let me in with an ID that says 'Under 21' even if I am indeed 21, and other bars said that it would not matter. Definitive answer please!

With all that said, where's the perfect bar for my birthday?! If necessary, disposable email at: iamanangelxo@aim.com.

I would love to find this great Barcelona hidden bohemian opera cocktail bar again, can anyone help? A few years ago while on vacation in Barcelona I was taken to this bar/lounge in El Born. What was special/unique for this place was that after they opened (usually around 11pm or so) they had some singers entertain with scenes from popular operas which everyone enjoyed with a cocktail in a great bohemian lounge.

I'd like to visit this place again but for the life of me I can't remember the name or its exact location. It had no connection to El Liceu (the BCN opera house), but was just a great hidden space. I know this is a long shot of a very specific venue, but if anyone out there could help it would really help me have a great vacation.

Where can I find a good reproduction or imitation of Eames Lounge (670) and Ottoman (671)?

Where can I find a good reproduction or imitation of Eames Lounge (670) and Ottoman (671)? Alternatively where can I find historical pricing information for original mid-century moderns? The originals are all over the place, but good quality ones seem to go for around $3,500 on the eBay market. The DNR models go for $4,600. Surely the chair can be made for less than that. Are there any good imitations out there? Can it be had for $1k-2k? It just seems that there's got to be someone importing these from Eastern Europe.

Also, is there some sort of historical pricing for the original? I'd feel more comfortable buying original if I knew historical eBay or dealer asking prices. I'm under the impression that it is a somewhat liquid market and people sort of treat these as assets that hold some value? At least less depreciation than a television or car?

Looking for classy bar or lounge reccomendations in Connecticut, but willing to visit Southern Mass area as well. Went to the Tunnel Bar in Northhampton, MA some time ago and truly enjoyed the cozy, quiet setting with the lovely ambiance, big leather armchairs, and tasty drinks. Can I get one of those around here? Where can I go in CT to have a few drinks and hold a conversation with friends where I could actually hear them talk? Not looking for a loud noisy drunken bar scene. Somewhere classy, maybe TunnelBar-like or Milk&Honey-esque?

Cheers!

Super Comfortable Portable Chaise for Sunning?

I've moved from a claustro apartment into a place with a (small) backyard, I have a full ipod with great headphones, and I've got a stack of books to read. It's time to kick back and suntan (quickly, before the really heavy rays kick in in July/August!).

So...can anyone recommend a seriously comfortable yet reasonably portable (must store in garage between uses) chaisse lounge...or other outdoor reclining furniture appropriate for sunning?

I'm going out to drink with a group of friends on Saturday and I need some suggestions on where to go. It has to be a lounge preferably in the East Village area or the LES. Some are looking to dance and drink, or just drink so a lounge with cheap drinks and good music (hip hop, reggae, reggaeton, rock music prefered)...

Know a place?

Dark Continent music: I have this archetype in my head of lounge/jazz/big band music from the 40s and 50s that drew upon stereotypes of african adventure. Exotica definitely. Please help me find some! I want to say Dizzy Gillespie's 'Afro' but that's not right. It's close, but I am looking for more relaxing, 'down tempo' (can you use that term for old music? I think ESL copyrighted it back in '99), and pre-written I think. I feel like some old Looney Tunes cartoons were very close to the mark in terms of style. I feel like I got this urge after being in a tiki bar, so definitely some overlap in style there, of americanized perceptions of exotica. Artists/CDs/Comps, anything.

New Years In Chicago

New Years in Chicago- I'm looking for a swanky lounge to spend New Years in the city. Google/CitySearch/Flavorpill have failed me so far. There's... My SO and I will be spending New Years in Chicago. We're not from there and are having a tough time wading through online postings of events to figure out what's cool or not. Here's what we want:
-Swanky lounge where we'll be required to wear more than jeans
-Loungy electronica/DJ music
-People ages mid-twenties to forties (we don't want to hang with the college crowd)
-Cover charge is OK.

What we don't want- trashy club playing top 40's all night with young kids booty dancing. Alternately, nothing too casual like a local pub with $2 Buds.

Unidentified Furniture Object: Huge reclining chaise. Help!

Help me find this currently-in-stores chaise recliner online! Visited a sort-of-local Rooms To Go today, and saw a huge chaise that reclines. Asked the attendant who made it, but she had no idea, so I'm hoping someone here can help me find a listing online--it doesn't appear at the roomstogo.com website, but somebody has to make it.

Here are some helpful details: It is a reclining chaise; it has a push-button release to control the recline. A motorized version is available. It's almost a futon turned sideways, it's so huge. Two adults fit on it with room to spare. There is no cushion shaping beyond a squaring pattern. It costs $749.99 and is part of a set (but can be purchased separately, and was on display alone.) We saw it in a darkish brown but the saleslady said an olive version is also available...both fabric, no leather. No indication this is a discontinued item. Help!

Birthday party location on 10/27 in Los Angeles?

Birthday party location on 10/27 in Los Angeles? I am planning my 30th birthday party for 10/27 in Los Angeles. I expect to have about 30 or so people there. I'm looking for a place, preferably in the Hollywood / Los Feliz / Silverlake area, where I can reserve a private-ish area for the entire party, or at least seats for everyone. There should be good music and dancing, and possibly even bottle service for a not-outrageous amount of money. It should not be so loud that conversation is impossible.

I would like to cover either dinner OR drinks for the entire party, so I was thinking that maybe a supper club would work - I could buy dinner and people could buy their own drinks. Or, alternatively, dinner there or somewhere else where people pay for themselves and then a club that would do an all-you-can-drink deal for my party for a fixed amount per person. Unless the place is very reputable, I would rather not just pick up the tab for everyone at the end of the night because who knows what people have charged to my tab and what the bartenders are up to.

This will be a mixed guys-and-girls together party, so a strip club wouldn't work, but if there was a burlesque type place that might work. Perez Hilton had Dita von Teese at his birthday party but I seriously doubt I could afford her at mine.

The place does not have to be trendy or fancy - if there is a dive bar that meets these requirements (obviously no bottle service there) that's fine with me.

I'm not setting a budget just yet, so let's just say it should cost less than $3k and that I would like a number closer to $1k.

Bars with a low-key vibe in Boston

Need suggestions for a grown-up bar/lounge in Boston I'm celebrating my 20th anniversary this week, and having dinner in Boston. We'd like to go from our dinner (Four Seasons Hotel) to a lounge/bar with good (low key) ambiance, and preferable some (not too loud) music. What's your favorite grown-up place to sit, drink, and talk in Boston?

Sexist songs? (Jazz and lounge edition)

I'm looking for mid-century pop songs with sexist lyrics. Think Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin singing about how nice it is to have a "girl" cooking dinner at home. Or about all the pretty "girls" out on the street. The lounge feel is what I'm after, though anything jazzy ought to work. Please help me annoy my wife! Some examples of songs that meet my requirements:

Wives and Lovers
"...Wives should always be lovers too,
Run to his arms the moment he comes home to you.
He's almost here, hey, little girl, better wear something pretty,
Something you wear to go to the city,
Dim all the lights, pour the wine, start the music, time to get ready for love.
Time to get ready for love, yes it's time to get ready for love,
It's time to get ready, kick your shoes off, baby..."

Standing on the Corner
"Standing on a corner watching all the girls go by
Standing on a corner watching all the girls go by
Brother you don't know a nicer occupation
Matter of fact, neither do I
Than standing on a corner watching all the girls
Watching all the girls, watching all the girls go by"

You can't have cashmere with out cash.

Suggestions on where to look for women's cashmere "lounge" pants in Chicago? there is of course I'd like to get my special lady friend some comfy pants for Christmas but am unsure where to look. Typically I buy all my gifts online as the crowds eat away at me, but this is something I'd prefer to buy "local" in the event that my grand gift idea is ill received. In additional to store suggestions, what exactly should I be looking for? A quick google search indicates I could spend any where from $40 to $1500 . Why the disparity and how much does it matter? What should I look for?
