I'm looking for a book I read as a pre-teen. It's been years since I read it and I can't recall the name of the writer, or the title of the work. I recall a little of the plot, but not much.
As far as I recall, it was about a girl living in a small town in the east coast who falls into a pit, or cave, something like that, and is saved by a man made of earth and stone. [more inside]

People who either travel with "gear" (broadly defined) or have to pack "gear" for work--how do you preflight what you're taking, make sure you have it when you go out, and make sure you bring it back when you return? Bonus: how do you label things so that it makes its way back to you if your protocol fails? [more inside]

I've got a lot of stuff. People like to borrow my stuff. And they sometimes forget whose stuff it is and I never get it back!
I had an idea to custom print my name, email, and phone number on narrow tape (perhaps vinyl based, similar to electrician's tape). Then, I can affix this tape to things that I loan out so that they're easily tracked back to me.
I tried looking around at various shops online, but the options are overwhelming, and they seem to be geared toward packing tape and business applications. All I need is one or two narrow rolls, not an entire box of the stuff! Has anyone done anything like this that can share some of your expertise with me?

Recovering a lost iPad.
This afternoon I suffered the grave misfortune of leaving my relatively new iPad 2 in a seatback pocket on an airplane. When I realized what I had done upon arriving in my hotel room, I immediately called the airline and submitted a report. I also attempted to locate the iPad using the Find My iPhone app. Although the app quickly located my other devices, it could not locate the iPad, presumably because the plane was winging its way to another destination. I ordered a remote lock and a message to be sent to the device as soon as it connects, and I went about changing the passwords for services I had used from the device. I have periodically checked the device over the last few hours to see if it shows up, but a few minutes ago, the iPad disappeared entirely from the list of my devices in the app.
What would cause it to disappear? I assume this means I am screwed?

I am trying to find an official account of a story I heard. A group of three men were working on a shrimp boat in the spring of 1993. The boat sank and only one man survived. This allegedly happened off the coast of northwest Florida and the survivor was allegedly in the water for 5 days before rescue. Is there a database of modern day shipwreck survivors? Can you think of a way I can verify this story?

I think I lost my Verizon phone. I had the same phone for the past 3 years, and I know that I was due for a new one for the past year. I do not have insurance, not that I know of at least. So, how do I go about replacing this phone? I am so confused... Will I have to pay for the new phone? (I am from another country, so I still do not fully understand how the cell phone stuff works here.)

I am trying to find the name of a movie I watched on TV when I was a young kid back in the 1970s. The film was about a group of people lost in a forest after a blizzard. At one point they find a car and start shouting, "It's the professor!" But when they get to the car the people inside it are frozen to death. I'm pretty sure it was a film for adults that was being broadcast on TV or it could have been made for TV.

We have lost a cat. Ignoring obstacles like trees, roads and houses, I am assuming he has gone on a random walk. Me and my fiancée have been out every night since he left, also walking randomly, hoping to find him. But I know a random walk in two dimensions always returns to the origin eventually, so are we actually any better off searching for him than just staying at home? [more inside]

A few months ago in the daily deluge of links I see there was a very cute (possibly Australian) animated PSA for children about the difference between good and bad touching. I meant to show it to my son, but I forgot to bookmark it, and googling it does not bring up the expected results (plus just leads to awkward combination of keywords) If you saw it, do you remember where it is?

In the 70's, a film was made about aliens settling their feuds on Earth. These beings would take human form and then shoot out their differences on neutral ground. There were only two special effects involved; The destruction of their opponent's corpses [ a simple bonfire] and the pre-showdown identification of the same with special sun-glasses [suck on it 'theylive'] . What drew me in as a child [aside from the weirdly bland fires] was the relationship between the alien and the human girlfriend he hid behind. Without throwing in a spoiler, the last shot haunts me to this day.
I ask because I am working on a script that leans on this work and I will be asked where my inspiration comes from. Plus I would like to see it again.
