Do I need to insure my web business? I am setting up a to-do list + calendar web application that holds users' data. Do I need to insure against data loss, or down time? Or can I put all that in a EULA (e.g., [web application] will not be responsible for any data loss, down time, data corruption etc)?

I was in a public location last weekend with a wi-fi enabled laptop (windows xp). Someone, with another laptop, was broadcasting a session id with the name "Free Wireless Internet." Without really thinking about what I was doing, I connected to this machine for a duration of approx 5 minutes thinking that I would get free internet. There was in fact no internet access. The next time I checked my computer for certain files, I noticed that a bunch of data was missing. Is it possible to do wi-fi computer to computer hacks? In just 5 minutes?

I am turning to the Meta community for help since I am at a loss on how to answer this question. A good friend of mine has suddenly lost a lot of data from an external drive that he keeps on all the time. He has a Western Digital 320GB drive that stores mostly live recording of the DMB. The drive reads as 298GB total size and 78GB free space, but the only folder on the external is showing that there is only 123GB of data being stored (therefore ~98GB of data is missing). He has searched the drive for the folders but they are not showing up.
Any idea of what could have happened to his files? Also, would it be safe to shut down the external (since its always on) and see if that fixes the problem?

I'm posting for a friend who was using an old laptop running win95. One day it wouldn't boot, so they took it to "Geek Squad" at compusa or wherever, and they said they couldn't help.
