Cost-effective strategies for moving from Hawaii to LA

I'm trying to plan our move from Oahu back to Los Angeles. We have too much for airline baggage, but too little for a shipping container. We're selling all the furniture and big items, and planning to buy used replacements when we arrive. We're paring down our belongings as much as we can bear, but it's still not going to fit in airline baggage. I'm talking medium-value, medium-sized things like baking pans, shoes, small kitchen appliances, and books. What's the cheapest way to ship all this little stuff? [more inside]

what are these unbuilt areas around LAX?

I was flying into LAX and I noticed there are a few areas around LAX which seem to have been planned to be city blocks, but then were not built on (or the buildings were torn down). Does anyone here know the story? Here are some locations in Google Maps: http://goo.gl/maps/di2GP http://goo.gl/maps/6zMfc

What's a nice thank-you trinket for a former Angeleno?

My friend, a former Los Angeles resident, was kind enough to have me stay at her place in New York City for several days recently, while I was visiting. As a token of my gratitude, I want to send along some kind of LA-specific trinket - you know, something you'd put on your desk at work or your bureau or fridge or whatever, that says, "Hey: Los Angeles" to someone who knows the place. Ten bucks or less is the range. What would you get, if you were in my position?

Vintage fixed-gear bicycle store in Los Angeles

I once wandered into a store selling vintage steel road frames converted into fixed-gear bikes. I think I was in the Silverlake area, but it could have been Los Feliz or Echo Park (I had been exploring LA all that day with a free TAP Card and wasn't 100% oriented). Career Coaching recommendations please! (especially in LA)

Overnight dog friendly hiking trip?

Where can myself, a friend, and our dogs go for a sweet overnight trip near LA next week? We'd like to do some hiking and some casual beer drinking, and we'd like to be able to get a cheap hotel room and not drive more than 3 hours or so. Also, although we're both in good shape, his dog is 12 years old and mine is a wimpy shih tzu so the hike should be fairly easy and would ideally have some access to water. I think it's too cold to camp, but if there's somewhere warmish we're open to that. Lay it on me, mefi!

I want to get on my own two feet. I need a plan of attack.

The Short: I'm a single young adult with a college degree and student loan debt. I live in a sterile small city with limited job prospects. I want to move out and get an entry-level or temporary job in a coastal U.S. city (NYC, LA, SF, Seattle). Please walk me through the logistics and help me devise a plan, as well as offer any advice you have on making it on your own in a new city (essentially, how to be an independent, self-sufficient adult). It looks great but could you make it a little bigger?

I bought a print of a painting I love in the only format available: A full bleed art show poster on glossy 11"x17" bond. The painting reproduction is approximately the top half of the poster, say 10"x8". I can clearly see the grain of the canvas in the print, and it is entirely possible that the original painting is not much larger than the reprint. So my question is, is it feasible to have this print blown up to twice or thrice it's size without sacrificing quality? [more inside]

Things to do in LA Tuesday evening

I am flying into LAX for work Tuesday and have the afternoon free. 3:15 arrival. Is there something really cool I could do that is 1) open, and 2) accessible considering traffic? (I have a car.). Maybe a museum or a scenic spot, ineresting historic site, or a trendy market area? I am not interested in bars or expensive restaurants. Bonus points if near Oxnard.
