Where can I buy sweet pineapple tamales in Los Angeles WITHOUT raisins or nuts or anything else mixed in? Ideally, I wouldn't need to buy at least a dozen or order them ahead of time. Thanks!
Good news: After a long period of being broke as a joke, I fell into a little bit of cash. I'd like to take the lady friend on a trip. She recently mentioned that she'd never seen a real night sky. I'd like to change that. Where, say, plus/minus 2 hours from Los Angeles can two young folk go see a sky full of starts? More inside. [more inside]
We've done some remodeling without permits in Los Angeles County over the past two years. What should I know and how should I prepare before attempting to get after-the-fact permits? [more inside]
I live in California and cannot, for the life of me, find any documentation, web site, or book that defines this. I know that foods for public consumption (for the most part) have to be produced in a certified kitchen. Are there certain fixtures or appliances REQUIRED in a certified kitchen? [more inside]
A friend and I are planning to go thrift-shopping in LA in a fewweeks. Neither of us have been thrift-shopping out there, though we're both pretty hardcore about thrift-shopping in general. So, tell me your secrets, LA MeFites, for finding the good stuff. Here's what we're interested in... [more inside]
Are there any bars / cafes / parking lots in the Los Angeles area showing Breaking Bad tonight? The usual googling hit a dead end.

What do Californians think and feel about the possibility of future big earthquakes in that region, especially the so-called "Big One"? I'm looking for articles which really get into how those who dwell there handle that knowledge, respond to it, and so on. Articles about building standards or government response are fine, but I would like to know about individuals, groups, businesses and the like. [more inside]
Until last season I was a more-than-casual basketball fan in general and Lakers fan in particular, but for various reasons last season completely fell off my radar. Help catch me up. [more inside]
Getting some ink done in Los Angeles that has Hebrew lettering in it and I would like it if the artist were Israeli or at least familiar with Hebrew letters. Anyone know any artists?
What are the best taco trucks in Los Angeles? Not Twitter trucks or Kogi trucks or grilled cheese vans or mobile record stores or cheesecake-foie gras-waffle-popsicle high concept rickshaws. Those are all cool, but looking at trucks that sell straight up Mexican food like tacos and cemitas and tortas and seafood, what are your favorites? And what days/hours are they there? [more inside]
I've been invited by a pornographer friend to watch the production of a porn movie on-set; the director told my friend they'd be happy to have me, provided we "have good set etiquette" and are generally not creepy or horrible. Which I can totally do! :) But I'm worried about the "good set etiquette" part. I assume most of it is commonsense, like "don't get in the way of people who are there to do their jobs," but is there anything special I should know about good set etiquette in the porn industry specifically? Anything that might not be immediately obvious? The last thing I'd want to do is make either my friend or the director regret the invitation.
My little sister -- an athletic, smart, totally awesome 12-year-old -- will be staying with me in the greater LA area in a couple weeks. I've been living here for a few years, but most of my spare time is spent on things like galleries/museums, strange, arty movie theaters, or experimental music shows (either watching or playing). This is the life for me, but I don't expect it to be enjoyable for my kid sister. So what are some fun things for a smart, conscientious pre-teen (tween? I don't know the terminology anymore) girl that likes to be outdoors or reading? [more inside]
Angelenos, help me out: a family needs to get from the Valley to Long Beach Airport and back. This is like an extremely difficult word problem from a graduate-level course in Advanced Los Angeles Traffic. Help! [more inside]
We're going to do a couple days in Los Angeles for a mini honeymoon next Thur/Fri nights. Want to see the Getty Museum, Olvera Street and maybe some Hollywood. Looking for someplace cool and unusual to stay - we like retro, art deco, mid century, kitschy, cheesy stuff. Clean, basic, bedbug free, a fridge in the room would be nice. Suggestions? Thank you!
Please advise. The closer to Hollywood the better. Thanks!

I reply to a fair number of L.A. travel questions here and many of the answers (including mine) often contain dire warnings about traffic. This happens even if traffic isn't directly related to the question being asked. So, visitors to our fair city, how bad was the traffic really, and what information/advice can I give to newbie LA tourists who drive? [more inside]

I'm trying to plan our move from Oahu back to Los Angeles. We have too much for airline baggage, but too little for a shipping container. We're selling all the furniture and big items, and planning to buy used replacements when we arrive. We're paring down our belongings as much as we can bear, but it's still not going to fit in airline baggage. I'm talking medium-value, medium-sized things like baking pans, shoes, small kitchen appliances, and books. What's the cheapest way to ship all this little stuff? [more inside]
I was flying into LAX and I noticed there are a few areas around LAX which seem to have been planned to be city blocks, but then were not built on (or the buildings were torn down). Does anyone here know the story? Here are some locations in Google Maps: http://goo.gl/maps/di2GP http://goo.gl/maps/6zMfc

My friend, a former Los Angeles resident, was kind enough to have me stay at her place in New York City for several days recently, while I was visiting. As a token of my gratitude, I want to send along some kind of LA-specific trinket - you know, something you'd put on your desk at work or your bureau or fridge or whatever, that says, "Hey: Los Angeles" to someone who knows the place. Ten bucks or less is the range. What would you get, if you were in my position?
I just got a job offer in Woodland Hills. I live too far away so I need to move. I would like to live in a leafy, beautiful, walkable neighborhood with lots of young professionals (I'm in my 20s), although I suspect that is a pipe dream. [more inside]

I once wandered into a store selling vintage steel road frames converted into fixed-gear bikes. I think I was in the Silverlake area, but it could have been Los Feliz or Echo Park (I had been exploring LA all that day with a free TAP Card and wasn't 100% oriented). Does anyone know what store this might have been, or where I could find a similar store in the LA area? [more inside]
I'm looking for a professional careers coach in LA to give me advice about changing careers (especially ones who are good at talking with MBA grads who don't necessarily want a typical MBA-type job). The variety of coaches available out there is a bit confusing and some of them are expensive - can anyone personally recommend one? And what criteria should I be judging them on anyway? [more inside]
We pay $200 a month for weekly service that includes all trimming, upkeep, lawn service for 3 lawns, significant pruning and leaf cleanup from 12 trees (citrus, pine, chinese elms, japanese maple, coastal oak, liquid ambars). I want to better understand my body. So, I want data - baseline data. Going to sign up for 23andMe, and I'd also like to get some imaging done. I'm interested in your suggestions for cheap medical imaging, and also for your suggestions on other ways to collect hard data about my body and its condition. [more inside]

Where can myself, a friend, and our dogs go for a sweet overnight trip near LA next week? We'd like to do some hiking and some casual beer drinking, and we'd like to be able to get a cheap hotel room and not drive more than 3 hours or so. Also, although we're both in good shape, his dog is 12 years old and mine is a wimpy shih tzu so the hike should be fairly easy and would ideally have some access to water. I think it's too cold to camp, but if there's somewhere warmish we're open to that. Lay it on me, mefi!
The Short: I'm a single young adult with a college degree and student loan debt. I live in a sterile small city with limited job prospects. I want to move out and get an entry-level or temporary job in a coastal U.S. city (NYC, LA, SF, Seattle). Please walk me through the logistics and help me devise a plan, as well as offer any advice you have on making it on your own in a new city (essentially, how to be an independent, self-sufficient adult). I bought a print of a painting I love in the only format available: A full bleed art show poster on glossy 11"x17" bond. The painting reproduction is approximately the top half of the poster, say 10"x8". I can clearly see the grain of the canvas in the print, and it is entirely possible that the original painting is not much larger than the reprint. So my question is, is it feasible to have this print blown up to twice or thrice it's size without sacrificing quality? [more inside]
