I'm moving from the East Coast to Los Angeles in the next few weeks. It is intended to be a permanent move, but I will be staying at an Airbnb for the first couple of months while I apartment-hunt, etc. In studying the California DMV guidelines here I see that I will need to provide a residential address to print on the license (even if I use a PO Box for my mail.) Is there any way around this? [more inside]
Asking on behalf of a friend. She is looking for an East-of-downtown LA therapist, preferably a woman. My friend is specifically interested in developing stronger relationships skills and working through past relationship trauma, and would also like a therapist who understands the issues surrounding women of color.
My father concedes that is no longer able to live alone. He has no money other than his rather meager social security. He is mobile, mostly rational, eighty years old next Monday, an L.A. native, quite independent, a daily library patron, and for his small-but-crucial social needs would like a street nearby on which to buy his daily paper and coffee. Is this possible? I wish to help my brother with the beginnings of a way to secure this.
I want to take my family to the beach in LA for a vacation in July. Which beach will be less crowded and best for my daughter to dig giant sandcastles? [more inside]
I just moved to Los Angeles and want to spend some time with this girl who is a lifelong resident of the city. She lives in Los Feliz, works in TV, and loves TV. Both of us are 34. Hivemind, do you have a good idea?
My local coffee shop has been playing archives of KCRW Morning Becomes Eclectic broadcasts this morning. I heard a great band on what I believe was an archived show, but I can't find it on their site. Help? [more inside]
We are completely lost for ideas. The last 4 years our non-profit group has held our holiday party at a Thai restaurant, at which, 2 employees couldn't eat because, peanuts. Our budget is around $42 per person (give or take). We are 30 employees. We need a private room. We are located in West L.A. Staff is willing to travel as far south as Culver City-ish. [more inside]
I'm visiting a bunch of US cities this month and next! Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Indianapolis, Chicago, Minneapolis, Denver/Boulder, Albuquerque and Los Angeles. I am looking for recommendations of things to do and/or folks to meet. [more inside]
I'm looking for suggestions for places to visit in LA (difficulty level: generally getting around, day spas, costumes, barre, crafting and outlet malls). [more inside]
I am at a conference in Pasadena this week. It finishes at 3:30pm on Friday. My flight to San Francisco is at 7:20pm from LAX that evening. I have never been to LA (or the US) before. What should I do with this time? [more inside]
I'm looking to enter a nursing program like a BSN or MSN in the next few years but was wondering about the best way to get all my pre-reqs out of the way this year. I'm 22 years old and I have a BA in Linguistics and Creative Writing. I haven't taken a math or science course since high school. Looking for information in Los Angeles (North Hollywood). We - mum, dad and two teenage boys aged 13 and 17) - will be in Los Angeles for a few days at the end of July and San Francisco for a few days at the start of August. We'd like to spend one evening in either city letting someone else entertain us - a sporting event or a show - but we'd like it to be either a bit odd or typically Californian. (Or both!) Moving my aging mother next month, from Salt Lake City to Los Angeles. Got some moving quotes. The two best were from A-1 Pioneer (a Wheaton agent) and Mergenthaler (a United Van Lines agent). Does anyone have any experiences, good or bad, with either of these? [more inside]
I’m trying to determine if it’s worth it to plan a career change from engineering to patent law, with a lengthy, difficult, expensive stop through law school first. Have you done this? Do you have special insight? [more inside]
Need to move my mother from SLC (Utah) to LA (CA). Don't want to risk driving her aging car on the highways in July for fear of a mechanical breakdown or worse. Moving company quoted us $900-1000 to add car to the moving experience. Uship.com finds quotes from many services who offer car transport for considerably less. Does anyone have any recommendations, particularly with car transport companies to trust (and others to avoid)? [more inside]
I live in Los Angeles in an apartment. In 2014 my landlord decided to demolish my building to build condos, so I received a $15k payment of relocation assistance from my landlord as mandated by the Rent Stabilization Ordinance of the Los Angeles Municipal Code and overseen by LA Housing Development (now the Los Angeles Housing and Community Investment Department, I guess). Is this exempt from State and Federal taxes? [more inside]
Can you recommend a doctor that treats underlying medical causes for hair loss in men in the L.A. area? [more inside]
Is it possible or practical for me to get immediate care for a psychiatric non-emergency? Location: Los Angeles. [more inside]
We're going to Disneyland tomorrow. We haven't done any advance planning. I don't have a lot of time today to devote to research, either, so I thought I'd ask if anyone can brain-dump a quick-and-dirty way to shave some time off the inevitable waiting. More detail and explicit instructions are better. [more inside]
I have tickets to a taping of Conan tonight. What should I expect? How early should I arrive to not be shut out? How long does a taping last? How funny is Jimmy Pardo? [more inside]
Planning ahead for Thanksgiving dinner in a new city. On Long Island my parents used to go to a local turkey farm where you could choose your bird and they'd slaughter it fresh for you. I'd love something similar in the Los Angeles area; failing that, I'm looking for the best place where I can reserve a fresh, heritage bird -- happy to pay extra for it.
I'm trying to suss out my own taste for engagement ring purposes and would like to try on emerald and/or blue sapphire rings to see if I like them as much in practice as I do in theory. Where can I do this in the greater L.A. area? I would prefer not to go to the downtown jewelry district (again), but if someone can recommend a shop there with emerald and sapphire rings IN STOCK to TRY ON and not just loose gems or settings separately, I'm open to the idea. [more inside]
I’m hosting a day-long meeting for nine people near LAX in September. Can you recommend a hotel in the neighborhood that’s moderately upscale? By which I mean, suitable for successful, middle-aged professionals who, luckily, understand that we’re not made of money. [more inside]
For the last few years I've been going to the Women's Clinic and PP for my routine exams, BC, etc. as needed but it's time to find a regular OB/GYN. I also need to replace my retired GP. Please refer me to your awesome doctors located in the Santa Monica/Venice/MDR/WLA area! [more inside]
How much is it worth to you to have (relative) freedom of choice? Enrolling in health insurance and I'm debating between an HMO and a PPO (both under Blue Shield of CA). The difference in cost is roughly $1,000. I'm a 26 year old female but I'm not exactly "healthy". I have mysterious, debilitating, chronic joint pain all over (undiagnosed as of yet), a couple car accident-related injuries that flare up every now and then, and I need to get a pap smear every 3 months due to a recent scare. So acupuncturists, chiropractors, internists, rheumatologists, and gynecologists must all be within easy reach for me. [more inside]
How long will it take me to drive from LAX to Irvine/Newport Beach at 4pm on a Friday? [more inside]
I just signed up for Uber and I want to do right by the driver. A service charge is included, and the web site says "no need to tip." Is tipping really not expected? [more inside]
We'll be in L.A. for 2-3 weekdays in mid-March, and while one of our evenings is scheduled, we have no idea what to do with the rest of our time. We'll be staying in or near Hollywood, and won't have a car, but don't mind taking transit. We're especially looking for suggestions for one really very nice, splurge-y place for dinner, as well as great inexpensive places to eat. Also interested in: coffee-snob coffee; fancy cocktails; craft beer; fun/interesting/unique places to shop; anything else that seems interesting. We also really like live shows (comedy/improv/podcast/music), but most of the L.A. shows we know about are on the weekend. And I'm planning to go to Jenette Bras for a fitting, but I'd love suggestions for any other bra shops that carry sizes in the G+ range.
my 11-month old son and i are tagging along on my husband's business trip to LA. staying in seal beach and looking for things to do! [more inside]

Whenever I get hungry, I wish I lived in Moss Landing. I would be at Phil's all the time. It's pretty much my dream eatery. Super casual, extremely yummy, reasonably priced for what you get. Where can I get that type of experience here on the west side of LA? [more inside]
I am traveling to California for the holidays, and I am slowly learning Spanish. I'd like to use this trip to motivate my learning. [more inside]
This winter I'll be going to a holiday party to which I'll need to bring the most exotic chocolate I can find. Apparently some guests to this party start their search for exotic goods six months in advance because of reasons, but as I am new to this universe I'd like to at least attempt to bring something of note now that I've been allowed to join the inner circle as it were. Where in San Diego, Orange County, or Los Angeles could I get delicious but intriguing chocolate? [more inside]
Any know based on previous years whether the Dia de los Muertos event at Hollywood Forever cemetery in Los Angeles is likely to have available walk-up ticket sales during the evening? Or, do they typically sell out? (All their official communications channels appear to be swamped, and I don't know anyone who's been there late in the day.)
A friend recently posted pictures from a fairly-fashionable (potentially used?) furniture store "somewhere in LA," but won't spill the beans about where it is! I'd like to find it and pick up some of this goodness. Hoping that one of you might know where it is. Thank you!! Pictures: 1 2 3 4 [more inside]
A friend and I are planning to go thrift-shopping in LA in a fewweeks. Neither of us have been thrift-shopping out there, though we're both pretty hardcore about thrift-shopping in general. So, tell me your secrets, LA MeFites, for finding the good stuff. Here's what we're interested in... [more inside]

I've been invited by a pornographer friend to watch the production of a porn movie on-set; the director told my friend they'd be happy to have me, provided we "have good set etiquette" and are generally not creepy or horrible. Which I can totally do! :) But I'm worried about the "good set etiquette" part. I assume most of it is commonsense, like "don't get in the way of people who are there to do their jobs," but is there anything special I should know about good set etiquette in the porn industry specifically? Anything that might not be immediately obvious? The last thing I'd want to do is make either my friend or the director regret the invitation.
Angelenos, help me out: a family needs to get from the Valley to Long Beach Airport and back. This is like an extremely difficult word problem from a graduate-level course in Advanced Los Angeles Traffic. Help! [more inside]
Please advise. The closer to Hollywood the better. Thanks!

I want to buy a cap for summer. Five panel, fitted, snapback, whatever. Something like this, this, this, or this. I'm in Los Angeles this week and Portland next week. What streetwear shops should I visit? [more inside]
I reply to a fair number of L.A. travel questions here and many of the answers (including mine) often contain dire warnings about traffic. This happens even if traffic isn't directly related to the question being asked. So, visitors to our fair city, how bad was the traffic really, and what information/advice can I give to newbie LA tourists who drive? [more inside]
I'm trying to plan our move from Oahu back to Los Angeles. We have too much for airline baggage, but too little for a shipping container. We're selling all the furniture and big items, and planning to buy used replacements when we arrive. We're paring down our belongings as much as we can bear, but it's still not going to fit in airline baggage. I'm talking medium-value, medium-sized things like baking pans, shoes, small kitchen appliances, and books. What's the cheapest way to ship all this little stuff? [more inside]
Moving in a few months within LA and need a place where music practice is tolerated - tips? neighborhoods? [more inside]

I have an extra $15.00 tacked onto my library fee. This is apparently a collections agency processing fee. Is there any way to not have to pay this exorbitant processing fee? [more inside]
I bought a print of a painting I love in the only format available: A full bleed art show poster on glossy 11"x17" bond. The painting reproduction is approximately the top half of the poster, say 10"x8". I can clearly see the grain of the canvas in the print, and it is entirely possible that the original painting is not much larger than the reprint. So my question is, is it feasible to have this print blown up to twice or thrice it's size without sacrificing quality? [more inside]
