I was flying into LAX and I noticed there are a few areas around LAX which seem to have been planned to be city blocks, but then were not built on (or the buildings were torn down). Does anyone here know the story?

I am going to be at LAX for 7-8 hours on Wednesday, November 14, from about 2-10pm, before I fly overnight from California to Virginia. I have never been to Los Angeles. Is there anything you would recommend me doing during that time?

I am in Los Angeles (Silver Lake area) and need to get to Anaheim (Disneyland/Convention Ctr. area) for this library conference this afternoonish. Is the best way to do this to go back to the airport and grab a shuttle, or is there something simpler?

On Tuesday I'm going to find myself with five or six spare hours as I pass through Los Angeles. I haven't really seen L.A. before, so what should I do? What should I see? Where should I eat?
For what it's worth, my hotel will be near LAX on Highway 1.
