My father concedes that is no longer able to live alone. He has no money other than his rather meager social security. He is mobile, mostly rational, eighty years old next Monday, an L.A. native, quite independent, a daily library patron, and for his small-but-crucial social needs would like a street nearby on which to buy his daily paper and coffee. Is this possible? I wish to help my brother with the beginnings of a way to secure this.
I posted my previous question last week. We've decided to follow the advice of several of you, and instead of driving from L.A. to the Grand Canyon and back we'll be driving from L.A. up the coast and back. [more inside]
My 18-year-old son and I are traveling to L.A. and points southwest at the end of this month. Both of us are inexperienced travelers and a little anxious. I want to get feedback on our planned itinerary and get any general tips or advice. [more inside]
I'm looking for a recommendation for a skilled piercing artist in a clean studio. I want to add a septum piercing to my growing collection of holes in my nose and I'm missing my hometown studio that had super knowledgable, skilled, and clean piercing artists. Could you help a person out and give me your favorite places to get pierced in LA?
I'm researching building a tiny house in Los Angeles and I'm looking for building code information. Short of going through the building codes (last I checked the codes are upwards of 6,000 pages) with a finished design, I can't seem to locate any sort of basic summary or "must have" list of features a tiny house has to have in order to be considered up to code. I also can find zero information about the status of trailers or if you could skirt the building code by simply building it on a trailer.
I want to take my family to the beach in LA for a vacation in July. Which beach will be less crowded and best for my daughter to dig giant sandcastles? [more inside]

I'm looking for places to eat in Downtown LA that would be good for a date and that wouldn't be so loud as to inhibit conversation during dinner. Nothing extravagantly expensive. Thanks!
I'd like some guidance on how to handle this red light traffic cam ticket in Los Angeles. My court date is today. [more inside]
Last year I went to Los Angeles and I packed ALL wrong. I saw highs of 80 and I packed for Wisconsin 80s and Florida 80s and that just wasn't right. It would get warm, even hot for a few hours only to be so cool in the evening. Some days it really felt like it was HOT for only an hour or two, then freezing. Or it would change depending on where I was. [more inside]
So, I'm back from my Portland trip and back in Los Angeles. I'm going to miss the overcast skies, the smallness of the place, the good public transit, the biking, and all the great friends I have there, but I'm seriously going to miss the crazy variety of sausages. Is there anywhere in LA I can get something like this huge variety of sausages? And if not, what is wrong with LA? 8 million people could eat a whole lot of sausages.
I just moved to Los Angeles and want to spend some time with this girl who is a lifelong resident of the city. She lives in Los Feliz, works in TV, and loves TV. Both of us are 34. Hivemind, do you have a good idea?

I'm spending tomorrow in Los Angeles with some family and friends. We usually park the car in a couple different places in some adjacent neighborhoods and explore denser neighborhoods on foot. We'd like suggestions for places to visit and things to do in Koreatown, Hollywood, and the surrounding areas (but not DTLA). [more inside]
For reference, I'm looking specifically for information about the city of Los Angeles, California. To be able to legally live in a building and call it home that building must be zoned as residential. There is a caveat to this and that is if you are considered to be a caretaker or custodian of that property. The problem is I can't seem to find where this situation is discussed in specifics in the civil code. [more inside]

I am still on the hunt for the perfect cafe in or around Los Angeles (preferably with a view of the ocean) where my husband and I can go read our books while sipping coffee. Google shows me lots of expensive beachside restaurants, but that is not what I am after. Outside Los Angeles within a 1-2 hour drive is fine, too.
I live in Los Angeles, and am thinking about buying a family cabin. Where should we look? [more inside]
We are completely lost for ideas. The last 4 years our non-profit group has held our holiday party at a Thai restaurant, at which, 2 employees couldn't eat because, peanuts. Our budget is around $42 per person (give or take). We are 30 employees. We need a private room. We are located in West L.A. Staff is willing to travel as far south as Culver City-ish. [more inside]

I live alone in West LA. I have a tiny car with no trunk to speak of. I would like to start shopping for some used furniture, but it won't fit into my not-trunk. Everywhere else I've lived, I've known friends or family who have access to pickups, SUVs, etc and coordinated with them when I needed furniture moved. Not here. How do people manage this single-handed? [more inside]
I took violin lessons for about 15 years when I was a kid. After 30 years or so, I've picked up the violin again and am interested in taking lessons and maybe finding a group to play with. I live in mid-city and work in downtown LA, so recommendations in those areas (or in between) would be preferred.

I just moved to LA (yay!). I've heard you can get lots of avocado varieties here that don't make it back East. I'd like to buy high-quality examples of several varieties and have a taste-test. I've found many articles on restaurants with good avocado dishes, but nothing about where to buy them whole. My location is West West Adams, near Culver City.
I'm more curious than anything else at this point. I moved to LA in February and since then I've noted that CA Diesel #2 (that's what they call it out here) is *either* about $2.50-$3.00 a gallon *or* about $4.25-$5.00 a gallon. What gives? [more inside]

I'm looking to enter a nursing program like a BSN or MSN in the next few years but was wondering about the best way to get all my pre-reqs out of the way this year. I'm 22 years old and I have a BA in Linguistics and Creative Writing. I haven't taken a math or science course since high school. Looking for information in Los Angeles (North Hollywood). So basically I'm wondering what the options are for someone with loans and other debt who needs a financial manager or advisor. I have recently become employed for a new company and while things are going well in that, I want to know where I can find someone to figure out my financial situation including calling debtors to find out exact amounts owed. I find it personally very emotionally difficult to do and it would be great if I could get help in doing that. [more inside]
I'd like to buy an ancient, byzantine or early middle ages gold coin as a gift for someone who likes ancient civilization and the idea of having a gold coin. Neither of us know anything about buying gold or coins or ancient things. I'd like advice on how to make this purchase without being taken for a ride. [more inside]
My wife and I are going to take a short break on the West Coast, visiting friends in SF and LA on consecutive weekends and taking the week to drive between the two along the coast down Route 1. We've not been to that part of the world before, so we'd welcome recommendations on cool places to stay and visit.
We - mum, dad and two teenage boys aged 13 and 17) - will be in Los Angeles for a few days at the end of July and San Francisco for a few days at the start of August. We'd like to spend one evening in either city letting someone else entertain us - a sporting event or a show - but we'd like it to be either a bit odd or typically Californian. (Or both!) [more inside]
It's very likely that I'll be moving to LA for work soon. If so, I'll only have a few weeks to find a place. I know very little about LA, so I'd love to get some insider info to help narrow my search. [more inside]
Moving my aging mother next month, from Salt Lake City to Los Angeles. Got some moving quotes. The two best were from A-1 Pioneer (a Wheaton agent) and Mergenthaler (a United Van Lines agent). Does anyone have any experiences, good or bad, with either of these? [more inside]

Need to move my mother from SLC (Utah) to LA (CA). Don't want to risk driving her aging car on the highways in July for fear of a mechanical breakdown or worse. Moving company quoted us $900-1000 to add car to the moving experience. Uship.com finds quotes from many services who offer car transport for considerably less. Does anyone have any recommendations, particularly with car transport companies to trust (and others to avoid)? [more inside]
