So, I'm running a bit late in making my hotel reservation for E3 and the nicer down-town Los Angeles hotels are booked.
Any recommendations on where to look if I expand my search radius? I will need to be on-site at the convention center, so I suppose that car-free would be best... but open to suggestions. (I'd prefer not to be by the airport).
Cost isn't a major factor, but probably wouldn't go as high as the Four Seasons for example.
thoughts? I'll have a day or so available for touristy stuff, so those suggestions are welcome as well.
thank you!

You're considering a move to Los Angeles for a job in Irvine. You and your (stay-at-home) wife are both in your early 30s, and have two young (under two years old) children. You were raised in the midwest, and prefer the suburbs. You want to live in an area that has lots of other young families and easy access to eating and shopping and preschools and other things like that. You don't want to spend more than 30 minutes or so commuting. You want to spend about $3,000 per month on rent for a 3+ bedroom single-family-home (or condo, you suppose). What areas of Los Angeles do you focus on?

I hate my job. HATE my job. I've worked here for 21 years, doing soul crushing work for the state court system. I haven't had a pay raise in seven years, not even a cost of living raise, have had my benefits scaled back and am looking at an even greater workload due to potential layoffs for my fellow employees unlucky enough to have been here as long as I have. Is there any chance that I can pick up stakes, move to Los Angeles, and hope to find a job paying me something comparable to what I currently make? (I apologize for the blizzard of snow flakes within)

I'm looking for recommendations for a restaurant gift certificate to purchase for a friend living in Los Feliz in Los Angeles. Anywhere in LA is fine, but Los Feliz is preferred. I don't care if the place is super fancy or not, but the food should to be awesome and $100 would cover a couple's full meals plus a drink or two.
Thanks!

I live in Los Angeles with my girlfriend. We both work in TV. I want to move to New York City and she's game, but she recently got into her department's union which provides highly coveted health/pension benefits and needs to maintain an address in LA in addition to fulfilling her union days every year. We are not rich. Can we be bi-coastal?

Another dancing in LA question: Which LA club/bar is most like Rafters (in Mammoth)? (older crowd, friendly, people go to dance) -- I'm not looking for the clubs where the "partner dancing" people go to practice (been there, done that), but clubs where just normal people between 40 and 60yo go to dance for fun. If you've been to Rafters, you know what I'm talking about. Prefer westside but flexible. Thanks!

You've lived in New York/Brooklyn your whole life. You're moving to Southern California in three months. You have a lot of free time. (No car, but access to Zipcar.) You realize you won't be back in New York for a long time. You're making a list of everything you want to do before you go - places you want to visit, things you want to see, things you want to eat. What's on your list?

My husband and I are about to make an offer on a condo currently owned by an older acquaintance looking to move to Florida. This is in the Los Angeles area. It's not on the market yet, and the offer will almost certainly be accepted. It's a fair deal although not a bargain. It's within our budget as it stands (although the tiniest bit tight), and if/when my husband finds better employment (which could be a lengthy process, granted) the payments will be quite comfortable. We're both first time buyers. The market is ostensibly at the bottom, interest rates are low, and buying seems like a reasonable decision for us. But... is it?

I have a large level-ish lot toward the top of Laurel Canyon, with a pond, waterfalls, and mature landscaping that, due to a fire, has been ravaged. Does anyone have suggestions for a top-notch landscaper who understands water features (pond/waterfalls), is an expert in the latest, most water-efficient irrigation systems, and can provide an estimate of what it will cost to bring my formerly glorious yard back to life. I appreciate any and all references/suggestions.
