Favorite groups/volunteering opportunities/events venues in London?

I'm an American moving to London soon. Because I don't know anyone there, I'm going to try to join some groups, take classes, and volunteer to meet people and generally just get out of my house. Of course, finding available classes and volunteering opportunities is easy, but it's considerably harder to figure out which ones are actually likely to be worthwhile. What groups, volunteer organizations, classes, and events venues have you had the best experiences with? [more inside]

Casual dinner in London RIGHT NOW - where?

It's 23:00 / 11:00PM. I'm in London, near St. Pauls. Where can I eat right now? Nothing fancy, just something to get a decent late casual dinner. Takeaway or delivery is fine (or even preferred), and totally flexible on cuisine. A good curry or Kebab shop would be idea. I don't mind taking a taxi or the tube, but I don't want to be out all night. Any ideas?

Why don't they just go to Pizza Express?

In London there's a chain of restaurants called Aberdeen/Angus Steakhouse - dated decor, expensive, scorned by locals but seemingly extremely popular with tourists. Are there equivalents in other cities?

What should I see at London Open House

I'm overwhelmed by the possibilities of Open House London, which sees hundreds of usually inaccessible buildings thrown open to the public. What are the can't-miss places that are worth queuing for? What are the little-known gems I might overlook? (Worth mentioning: I have a particular fondness for the exuberant, the quirky, and the eccentric.)

Is it possible to get tickets for a cricket match at The Oval in London?

I really want to get two tickets to the third day of the third test between England and Pakistan at the Oval (in London). The only tickets on public sale are in the premium section at £100ish each. Any cricket fans know if there's likely to be another release of tickets nearer the time, or whether there's any other legitimate avenue for buying tickets?

Vegetarian food near the Roundhouse

I'm going to a gig tonight at the Roundhouse in London with some friends. We'd like to go somewhere to get some food beforehand and I'm wondering if any users here have any suggestions. Most of us are vegetarian and none of us have much money so ideally we'd want a cheap and cheerful little café or something. Anywhere within walking distance of the venue would be great. Thanks!
