This has become somewhat of a perennial AskMe question (previously in 2013, previously in 2012, previously in 2007), but as the mobile communications landscape is ever-shifting, it never hurts to have up to date information. So, if I'm spending the month of August in London, which of the several offerings is the best PAYG-SIM phone to grab upon arrival? I will be bringing my iPhone (AT&T), but turning off data roaming and using it as wi-fi only when I can. Are there deals on low-end smartphones that are worth the extra cash, or is it still best to just grab a simple flip-phone with SMS?
Where are some interesting places to walk in London? I am in London the next few days and would like to explore some new areas after work. All I know is Bloomsbury to Mayfair to Westminster, so not much at all! It would need to be reachable by tube and should be safe. I would love to find little shops or cafés as well as just a pleasant place to walk for a few hours. I am staying in Hackney, if that is relevant. [more inside]
I have a day to do shop for petite sized clothes and shoes in London. I need everything from t-shirts to dresses. Good quality clothes preferred, but getting some items at Topshop and the like would be fine. Where should I go?
We have booked our trip to London and Paris this summer-yay! My 17 year old daughter will be with us, and she loves everything related to fashion and beauty-style guides, shopping, makeup, museums, resale stores, all that. I don't love to shop, but am happy to include some in our trip. Any specific ideas for us in those two cities? [more inside]
Us: nice young couple with an infant. Seeking to try out a London neighborhood for a year, and then maybe buy (if the potential bubble doesn't scare us off). Budget for a flat/house would be about 650,000 to 700,000 pounds (maybe a little wiggle room). [more inside]
Planning Ahead Filter: My travel buddy already has a ticket on Airline A (ATL-LHR round trip) for our planned trip together in November. (Miles & awards redeemed so she is set). We're deciding what to do about my ticket. [more inside]
I graduated three years ago, and have spent most of the time since in healthcare/pharmaceutical PR. I loathe it. I want to sign up for an intensive Rails course, but I'm not sure if I should make the leap! [more inside]
I can't believe I waited this long to ask the MeFi hive-mind, but here we are. In 24 hours my wife and I will be leaving on our honeymoon to the above-mentioned destinations. What I'm looking for are some cool, unusual, secret, or just plain "local favorite" things to do and places to go. Rather than simply pointing me to other sites offering collected reviews of places (tripadvisor, et al) I'm hoping to get some first-hand recommendations from you all. Time will be rather short in each city (3-4 days each) so let's try to stay within the cities themselves, as we won't really have time for outlying excursions. To give you an idea of what we're after, my wife and I are both lifetime members of the gothic subculture, and she in particular is very interested in fashion. Eccentric bars/pubs are also favorites. We leave on May 4th, but feel free to contribute later in the week, as I'll be eagerly checking this thread for your suggestions. Cheers, MeFi!
Hi! We (husband, wife, child) are moving to London soon (more questions on that to come!) One thing that's really important to me is to be in an area that we can register with a really good GP. I've lived in the UK before, and had hit or miss experiences, and don't want this to happen again -- so much so that I want to suss out the great GPs to help make a decision on where we should live. So, who/where are the awesome GPs in London? Or how else would I go about researching this?
I would like to ask you for any advice/hints/tips for a complete beginner on buying a flat in London. This is the first time in my life when I am buying a property I am really overwhelmed by this whole thing. That's why I would appreciate any feedback and advice from you. Anything which could help me plan this whole process and do it in a proper, organized and satisfying way. [more inside]
I rent a flat with my SO in London. We've finally saved enough to be in a position to buy a home but the insanity of the market is making me hesitate. What to do? [more inside]
My husband will be at the ICANN conference in late June of this year, which is being held at the Hilton London Metropale. I think the kids and I might join him towards the end of his time, but since we're a family of 5, we're probably going to need something other than a hotel. I've been looking at VRBO a bit, and will check out Air BnB, but could use some recommendations of specific areas to go for or avoid-leads on specific rentals would be fabulous! [more inside]
My best friend - the loveliest, dearest, most wonderful of friends - is getting married in London and I can't be there. What can I send for her to open on her wedding day to let her know that I am there with her in spirit? [more inside]
Hi there, Based in North London close to Victoria line and I need to buy 80-100 cubic feet of helium to inflate a very large balloon. I want to inflate the balloon on location as it's too big to transport, so I'd rather buy a canister of helium than get it inflated at a party shop or whatever. Thanks for any recommendations!
Where in the London metro area -- Tube-accessible -- would be the best place to go for a ~10 mile run on a weekend morning without having to battle too much pedestrian and vehicle traffic? Closer to central London would be better, but I am flexible. Any advice received will be employed in April and considered in booking hotel accomodations.
In a few hours (5), I will leave Kuwait en-route back to the United States. I have a 24-hour layover in London and a hotel room (right across from Heathrow) that has already been bought and paid for my my company. I will arrive at around noon, and I will have until around 10 a.m.-ish tomorrow (Sunday) to explore London. Money is no significant concern (but let's keep it reasonable). What are the absolute must-see PG-13 things to do in London in 22 hours? GO!
As I get older, I get creakier and I'm hoping yoga may be the answer. Can anyone recommend a class in south-east or east London that focuses mostly on the physical side of yoga and less on the meditative/spiritual aspects? Bonus points for suggesting a particular style that would suit me, a physically active late 30s male who swims and cycles regularly.
My wife will be in London for 2 days in late April. She asked me to ask you some things. [more inside]
In just over a month, I will be moving to London to take up a new job. I'm a bit overwhelmed by the rental market so need some advice on locations, costs, and anything I have probably overlooked. [more inside]
My small business needs an independent 3rd party to keep a weather eye on us and ensure we stop slacking. Where should I go looking to find someone experienced who could give us 2 hours of their time every month for next-to-do nothing? [more inside]
I have decided I want a bike for my 14-mile round trip commute between North and West London. I don't currently cycle at all. What kind of bike do I need? [more inside]

Recommendations for a reasonably-priced service in London (which is where I currently am) that can help clean up my CV with an eye toward English teaching work? [more inside]
I'm headed to the UK for the first time, and would like to do some sightseeing related to William Blake. Is there anything worth seeing? I've haven't found anything apart from Poet's Corner and this very dodgy seeming walking tour. Alternatively, can anybody advise me as to which museums in the UK are best for viewing Blake's original prints?
On the South bank of the Thames in 2002 (and maybe still there), there was a structure, like a piece of public art, in which you could place your body and it would support you at a slight angle, enabling a wonderful view while totally relaxed. It was a tilted section of a cylinder, made of dark metal. Does anyone remember/know of this? An image, location, or name of the artist would be wonderful!
I've recently found myself with an excessive amount of holiday which needs to be taken in December so I've decided to buy myself a Digital SLR and go on a beginners photography course in London. However given that I won't be working and it's the winter (so limited hours of light), I want one that runs during the day. Help! [more inside]
So you're Jewish and homesick and in London and all you want for your Chanukah miracle is an inexpensive electric menorah. How can this be achieved? [more inside]
I'll be arriving at Marylebone station at 10:30am and departing from the same station around 5:00pm. What should I do with my six hours? I definitely want to have lunch somewhere fabulous.
I like M&S-style clothing, but as a slender man (35 chest 31 waist) I often have trouble finding something that fits, and the M&S range of winter coats, even in 'Small', looks a little baggy on me. Where else in London could I find something reasonably stylish, but also warm, to wear over a shirt & sweater, for less than, say, £300? [more inside]
I am helping a friend to expand her London based bar snack business and seek commercial kitchen space to rent in London. [more inside]
Howdy! We're relocating from New York City to London at the end of this year, and of course we're taking our cat Olive with us. What we're having a little bit of a hard time with is figuring out just *how* to bring her, and we're hoping you can help us. [more inside]
I'll be in London soon and wanted to see the West Ham vs Aston Villa Premier league game. I could not seem to get tickets through either team, and the only other options I see are websites that have lots of reviews that people got bad tickets and no refund. Are there any suggestions from people in London or premier league fans on how to get tickets?
Going to London on a very quick and dirty business trip next week. I'd like to acomplish two things. 1) Bring my friend, a French foodie living in Brixton, something from America that she might find difficult or can't get there (value up to $50-$100) and 2) pick up some thing(s) for myself as a cool souvenir that I can't get over here. [more inside]
I have escalophobia (vertigo related) and so as a rule avoid the extra long escalators on the tube network (namely Angel, Holborn and Leicester Square) as I've previously had panic and vertigo attacks on them. This evening I need to get to Goodge Street and TfL recommends I change from the Piccadilly line to the Northern line at Leicester Square. I'm struggling to find out from google whether this change involves using the very long escalators. Do you know? [more inside]
So, after leaving her job to pursue another degree in a field that she loves and having been out of work (or studying) for nearly 3 years my other half has been offered the job of her dreams. Yay! Unfortunately we're in Yorkshire and the job is in South West London, and the job is (initially at least) a 7 month short term contract. So she needs accommodation. [more inside]
I am looking for a new career direction and am curious about UK emergency services/NHS dispatcher jobs. I have found a little bit of information about these sorts of jobs online, but never seen them advertised. Have you ever done this sort of job? Can you point me towards any information? I am particularly looking for information about pathways into this sort of career, and what the work itself is like. (I already know about the sadly defunct Nee Naw blog.) I am based in central London. Thanks!
Where can my girlfriend and I sit down, relax, read, and talk for a long while during our visit to London? When weather is good, we love parks. When it's raining, we're at a loss. Are there any especially good libraries or other places for this kind of thing? Thanks!
I would like to to like to buy some IKEA-style furniture, and I'm willing to pay a premium of around £60-£100 so that I don't have to build it myself. But I can't find any way to buy any! Surely this must be possible? [more inside]
Spending a week in accommodation in Brockley, London, in early October. To be specific, Manor Avenue Brockley London, SE4 1TE. As London seems to be the place where you literally breathe out money in order to survive, keen to do this on as low a budget as possible. Will not have a car and prefer walking where possible. [more inside]
Going through architecture sites, it looks as if all residential projects in London are of the mostly-glass, super clean type, like this one or the output of these fine people. Are there residential architects who like to do thing in a more, hm, bohemian, messy way, or is that totally out of fashion?
You are male, single, employed, 20/30-ish, looking to settle down and start a family with a similar lady within the next three years or so. Where in London do you go to find potential dates? (Asking for a friend.)
I'm in London again, and having a whale of a time thanks to all the advice I garnered last year. One new thing I want to try this time is having a little flutter-I want to place a small bet on something. I don't expect to win, but would like to know how to bet intelligently so as to improve the odds. [more inside]
I'm looking for book recommendations for thorough, engaging, and rigorous histories of Savile Row tailoring and/or books that talk about the history and philosophy of fine men's tailoring and dress. I'm not averse to books with technical information, as well as historical and cultural information. Thank you!
I'm trying to rebuild a mix tape made for me by a London friend around 1989-1990. One track I'm having trouble finding started out with "Are you sitting comfortably? [Good.] Then I'll begin," which is a sample from the BBC's "Listen with Mother" radio series (click on the second old time radio for a clip, starts at the :16sec mark). After that it had a very deep man's voice saying "Welcome," over and over again while the music ramped up behind it. I always thought the man sounded like Worf, from ST: TNG. Any leads?
I'm looking to get a one-off print of a digital image printed in London. It's going to be mounted and framed as a birthday gift - a Google search turns up lots of options but I'm looking for somewhere highly recommended and with a great reputation. [more inside]

It's our second time in London as a married couple, but now we're vegan. Recommendations for a lovely night out for just the two of us? [more inside]
The recently released movie Closed Circuit uses London's extensive use of the CCTV technology in ways I had only envisioned in my own screenplays. What movies within the past 10-15 years or so also do this? I am thinking more like how the Bourne movies used the technology than movies like The Conversation and The Lives of Others. What movies use CCTV's in an interesting way? Bonus points if it's in London, but it can be anywhere.
We just moved back to London, joy! But our very heavy Dutch style bike does not lend itself to our new flat. What is your advice for finding a light compact bike relatively cheaply, ethically sourced? [more inside]
