Why do bus shelters face the way they do?

A colleague who has recently moved to London asked me why bus shelters here sometimes face towards and sometimes away from the road, seemingly at random. I guessed maybe to do with the location of under-road pipes/wiring, but couldn't find anything concrete online. Anyone know?

Going from Southwest to Northeast London quick and cheap

Often I want to go from Southampton UK to Islington. The public transportation system in London is awesome! There must be a better way than the white-knuckle drive through the city I currently do... Given that I want to do the first leg of the trip via car, I expect there is somewhere in SW London I can park and take public transportation, and get to Islington relatively quickly (~1 hour) and cheaply. I've played around with Google maps, and there are a bajillion options.... anyone know one that is near optimal? Ideally with free/cheap parking, and outside the congestion fee zone.

London bus engines - are they turbines?

I've noticed that most newish London busses don't sound like a normal diesel engine: they sound more like some kind of turbine. What engines do they use and why? [more inside]

Been hit by a bus... What next?

This morning I was hit by a bus while cycling to work. I'm not badly hurt but currently in hospital waiting to have my shoulder checked and cuts cleaned out. I'm in London, England. The bus driver was 100% to blame. The police have taken a statement from me and I have two phone numbers from witnesses. What should I be doing now to make sure I receive adequate compensation and the driver is dealt with appropriately?

Bus-spotting meets font-spotting

Does anyone know what font is used on these vintage bus blinds? I know of a London Underground font but these look quite different. Any similar ones out there, preferably free?

London Busses

In London, what's the difference between a white "Bus Stop" and a red "Request Stop"? Cause, like, I've never seen them used differently.
