How to fix mouse problems in OS X

Why doesn't OS X recognize my mouse's middle button click and why does it slow down over clickable objects? I've got a Logitech Bluetooth MX Revolution (part of the Logitech MX 5500 Keyboard/Mouse bundle). The keyboard works fine, and the mouse gets recognized fine, and generally works, but:

1) If I mouse over a clickable object (link, icon in the dock, etc.) the mouse slows down - as if it's aiding me in being able to click (not quite snapping-to the object, but slows down when I mouse over it). I haven't changed anything in Universal Access, and for the most part nothing seems out of the ordinary there (mouse keys off, nothing checked, Initial Delay and Maximum Speed are both on the far left).

2) My middle mouse button doesn't work. It worked briefly, but now not at all - I can scroll just fine with it, but clicking does nothing. I downloaded Steermouse, and the middle click is not being registered there either. I've used the mouse on a Windows machine, and the middle click is fine.

Other notes. I'm running a Fall 2008 Unibody Macbook Pro. I just upgraded to Snow Leopard, and was hoping that'd fix the problem, but no. In Steermouse, problem 1 goes away, which is great, but I'd like to get this working without Steermouse if at all possible. The mouse's other buttons all seem to be fine in Steermouse.

Mostly question two is the one I'd really like answered, as I can live with spending the money on Steermouse if need be. Thanks.

jumpy mouse disease

my logitech mouse is jumping around frantically on os x. it's behaving completely normally one second and then it's off somewhere entirely different the other. lots of details inside. I purchased a logitech RX720 mouse a while back without realizing it was meant for windows only. being the hackjob that it is logitech's own control center refused to accept it accordingly and the site didn't provide any drivers. not to worry, macs still let you use such mice, they just don't have customizable a right button. alas, I wanted that right button, so I installed steer mouse, which I was assured was much better. fast forward a week of perfect behavior and my mouse is back to jumping around.

here's what I've tried thus far:

- I have changed batteries.
- I have uninstalled steer mouse and just used 10.4.11 to run the mouse.
- I have changed the surface below the mouse (it's an optical mouse. I tried a black mousepad, a yellow folder, a white piece of paper).
- I've tried to look for obvious smudges though I avoided looking into the laser hole for obvious reasons. or am I being overly cautious?

I'm ready to throw this dreck into the can and accept that this mouse (which sadly I can no longer return) needs to be replaced. other mice previously worked well with my mac book pro. I don't know what the issue is.

you are this little logitech mouse last hope. share ideas of suggest a painless death for it because I am ready to go postal on it.

Trouble with Logitech USB 350 headset under OSX 10.5.7

I've just upgraded a G5 tower from 10.2.x to 10.5.7. The upgrade went off without a hitch... but... i do have a problem using my Logitech USB 350 headset with the system now. When making a call with Skype, for example, the headset will typically work for a while (several minutes) before suddenly throwing out massive amounts of horrible noise via the mike channel. When this happens, I can hear the other side of the conversation just fine, they however can't hear anything except an aneurysm-inducing noise. If I hang-up and restart the connection, the game repeats. Sometime the noise sets in sooner, sometimes later - however, it always sets in. Facts: 1.) This headset worked without a hitch before the upgrade (from 10.2.x). 2.) Audio settings on a system level and within Skype are correct. Does anyone have any clue as to what is going on and what might remedy the situation?

Is there a way to, um, calibrate this Logitech mouse? I have this Logitech wireless mouse. I'm using a Macbook Pro with a second 24" Dell monitor.

Sometimes when I click to close a window on the second monitor, it minumizes it instead. Thing is... I know for a fact that I had the cursor on the close button. It's like sometimes, regardless of the cursors position, the actual location of my clicks are a few pixels off. What gives?

Another issue: Sometimes I have to click two and three times to get the click to actually register. But it's not like I'm not pressing down hard enough, or the mechanics of the mouse aren't firing, because when I click, I see the visual evedence of the click happening in the proper place each time. Like, when I click to close a tab in Firefox, I see the X change color and depress, but it sometimes won't actually close until I click it two or three times. Or sometimes I have to actually click the tab to make it on top, then click close, and it works.

Also: I'm 99% sure this is an issue with this mouse specifically, not a monitor/computer/OS/software issue, because clicking is 100% accurate when I use the trackpad. Or when I had a different mouse.

I've looked in my system preferences, under both the mouse settings and the Logitech Control Center, and can't find anything that would allow me to calibrate this mouse.

Is there anything I can do to make this mouse work properly, or should I just cut my losses and buy a different one?

OS X 10.5.6 Dock remains hidden

I have OS X 10.5.6 and Logitech V470 bluetooth mouse. 1. When I hide the dock it stays hidden and there is no way for me to get the dock to reappear without turning off autohide 2. My courser works sporadically a. sometimes it will only work on some area's of the screen b. sometimes it won't recognize clicks Are these related? and can I fix this? will the plist file removal work?

I have a macbook 2.16GHZ Intel Core 2 Duo
with 2GB of SDRAM
running OS X 10.5.6

Why is my new wireless keyboard working, but not the wireless mouse it came with? Players:
Old Belkin Wireless Keyboard and Mouse (not sure of exact model - but the receiver plugs into a USB and ps/2)
New Logitech Cordless Desktop Wave (keyboard and mouse, receiver plugs into a USB)

I unplugged the old Belkin stuff, took out the batteries and plugged in the new Logitech stuff. It looks like the receiver is synching to both the keyboard and the mouse but while I'm able to use the keyboard, I'm unable to use the mouse.

I've tried restarting the computer. I called Logitech support and he had me synching and resyching and powering up and powering down, etc. I've looked online and I don't think I am searching correctly. Right now, I am using the new keyboard and the old mouse. I can't find anything on my add/remove programs about Belkin in case I needed to uninstall something.

I don't think it's the mouse because this is the second new Logitech wireless keyboard/mouse in 2 days that I've had this problem with. I have called my IT department and put in a request but it usually takes a few hours for someone to come by.

What am I doing wrong that the mouse isn't being recognized?

Help us find a case for our remote.

Seeking advice on what to do with (or looking for resources explaining how to fix) aging 5.1 PC speakers for when/if parts start breaking. So I've got a set of 5 or 6 year old set of Logitech z680 speakers (http://images.google.com/images?q=z680) that have served me well over the years but have recently begun to make popping/ppptttfff-ing noises sporadically (cycling through the 'effect' button makes it go away for a bit, but it ends up coming back eventually. I fear the command module is on its way out) Is there a buyer's market for replacement parts for these speakers? It would appear that Logitech has replaced this line with a newer set, therefore no longer supporting them.

I've seen the satellite speakers available on ebay for an affordable price (at least for now), but I am more concerned with replacement command module/preamp (the console part with the volume knob and buttons on it) or subwoofer parts.

1) Are there places that sell replacement command modules/preamp or am I SOL if this breaks? I have seen the entire set still being sold, but not the individual components.

2) Will I be stuck with trying to dismantle the sub and spend hours reading up on how to fix it (and perhaps fry something) if that goes out (any resources you audiophiles frequent?)? What are some ways to tell if it's the sub or the command module or something else that's bad?

3) The remote control ceased to function long ago, but it would be nice to be able to replace that too ...

4) What's the life expectancy of these type of things anyways? I would ideally like to migrate them over to use for my secondary 'media' center speakers (I prefer

While I am not averse to dismantling things and I consider myself to have somewhat above average mechanical aptitude (perhaps not when comparing within the set of mefites), when it comes to troubleshooting electronic innards/circuitry like what might be in the sub or pre-amp, I feel quite ignorant (learning resources welcome!).

Sending stuff back to the manufacturer.... does it work? I got this top of the line Logitech webcam as a gift a couple of years ago and never used it. Now the opportunity to use it presented itself, I tried to install it and... nothing. It is very likely broken. (And I have tried all sorts of things, so this is not a tech support question, don't worry about that part.)

So now I am not in the mood for going through customer support hell, so I'll probably go out and buy a much cheaper camera, because this one was way more than I needed anyway.

But I have heard about people sending broken products to the manufacturer and getting stuff sent back for free. Is it an urban legend? Has anyone tried that? Should I just put this in a box and ship it to Logitech and hope for the best?

Help with Logitech wireless keyboard/mouse trouble.. So I have this wireless keyboard/mouse deal. It's similar to the current MX Cordless Desktop line, with a rechargeable mouse and a keyboard, but it's a couple of years old.

I'd been using it fine with my PS3 on the rare occasion that I needed a keyboard, but I haven't had it hooked up in a month or so. I finally got around to getting a docking station for my laptop so I can plug it into my TV and use it from the couch. Sadly, no go with the keyboard and mouse. Neither work.

I replaced the batteries on both the keyboard and mouse. The mouse's laser lights up just fine, so I know that at the very least one of them has working batteries. I press the connect button on the base station, followed by the connect button on the mouse, but hte mouse still doesn't work. I think the issue is with the base station, as it has no lights whatsoever, and I vaguely remember the connect button lighting up when pressed, and it should presumably be showing the status of the num lock and caps lock since it's plugged into the computer.

I tried plugging it into a different outlet, but that didn't do squat. Not that the power strip isn't known good, but still. ;)

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to make this thing work before I go spend a ridiculous amount of money buying a new one?

What is the super-secret combination to reset a Logitech wireless keyboard? A while ago, I was having trouble getting my Logitech MX3000 wireless keyboard to connect - first it started acting up (strange input) and then it just disconnected.

I tried all the stock advice - the ususal "press the red button on the receiver, then press the red button on the keyboard..."; and also the "remove the batteries/flail on keys/discharge the capacitors" blah blah, the keyboard still wouldn't connect.

Then I found a reference to a mysterious key combination that reset the keyboard, and it worked perfectly immediately thereafter. However, I neglected to save the link, and now cannot find it for the life of me. Anyone?

Not So Mighty Mouse

Help me find a (non-Mighty) mouse for my Mac that can be programmed to function with Exposé and Spaces. I've been using my Mac Pro for a few years now, and the Mighty Mouse is starting to drive me crazy. The scroll ball jams up every few days and has to be thoroughly cleaned and smacked around just to work again.

I also have a Logitech gaming mouse from my previous PC, but it doesn't have the ability to assign buttons to Exposé and Spaces, which is something I really, really enjoy.

Is there a 3rd party mouse that can be programmed to take on these functions, but doesn't have that horrible little scroll ball of the Mighty Mouse?

If not, can I either clean the scroll ball so that it STAYS clean, or get software to make my Logitech (MX 5000, I think) work properly?

It doesn't have to be cordless, and it doesn't have to be too gamer-friendly, since I switch to my Logitech for WoW, etc. anyway.

Downsize my USB receiver?

Can I use a Logitech VX Nano wireless receiver with my MX Revolution mouse? If so, where can I buy just the receiver. So, I own a Logitech MX Revolution, which I love - except for the receiver. The receiver sticks out of the USB port on the side of my laptop, and I'm completely nervous all the time that it'll break off.

Logitech has another mouse, the VX Nano, meant for notebooks, which I dislike because it doesn't have a gazillion buttons (all of which I actually use), but it has a very cool receiver - tiny, doesn't stick out, etc.

Can anyone confirm or deny that I could use the VX Nano receiver with my MX Revolution mouse? If not, is there somewhere online where I could purchase *just* the receiver, so I could try myself? I've checked eBay and pricewatch.com and well, where else can I look?

(Alternatively, I imagine it's possible to create a USB Mouse to Bluetooth bridge device, but I doubt these even exist...)

How to Pair Logitech Bluetooth Headphones to Samsung Phone?

How can I pair Logitech Freepulse Bluetooth headphones with my Samsung D900 phone? I recently bought a Samsung D900 phone, which is also a Bluetooth A2DP media player.

I subsequently bought some Logitech Freepulse Bluetooth headphones, theoretically as a way to listen to stereo music wirelessly via my phone.

I read up on both devices prior to purchasing, and nothing in the Logitech documentation clearly stated that it would work without the supplied audio-jack dongle plugged into a mic-jack. Nevertheless, since it was advertised as a *Bluetooth* device, I figured there was a good chance it would work normally with other Bluetooth units.

Tonight I tried to pair the devices...I placed the headphones in pairing mode (the LED was flashing red and blue) and my phone would see them with a label of "Freepulse headphones". I entered the standard code (0000) and the connection *appeared* to work (the headphones showed up in my list of devices), but when I tried to play a song and transfer it to a Bluetooth device, I would get a "Connection Failed" error. This caused a sort of error tone to emit over my headphones, but beyond that there was no sign that the headphones could connect.

I paired several Bluetooth headsets to my phone so I'm sure the phone isn't the problem.

The Logitech documentation only mentions pairing with the dongle, so my guess is that it is designed to only work with that. However, since it's using Bluetooth, I also believe there must be a way to connect it to a standard Bluetooth device (like my phone)...probably there is some 'hidden' pairing code other than '0000' that links the two.

If anyone has any insight into how to get this to work I'll be most appreciative.

What to do with a Logitech NUON gamepad? NUON was enhancement to some DVD players about 5 years ago that made it act like a video game console. During the last Woot.com Bag of Crap offering, I received a brand-new, totally useless Logitech NUON gamepad (http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Gamepad-NUON-DVD-Players/dp/B00005BIDY).

Now the question is, what can I do with such a useless gamepad?

I probably will not be able to sell it since no one uses the NUON, let alone know what the heck it is.

I'm an aspiring engineer by major, so it would be fun to do some sort've reverse-engineering or something to it. The connector appears to be some sort've mini-USB, so I'm wondering it there's a way to connect it to a computer or something.

In any case, it's just sitting in a box in my room in need of some love. I'm in the mood to get creative.

Does the Logitech/Slim Devices takeover matter?

I just got a webcam and in lieu of using audio from a microphone, I'd like to play music along with the streaming video. I can't figure out how to accomplish this though and I don't really know what I'm doing. The camera in question is a Logitech QuickCam Pro 5000, which has been working pretty well for me so far. As I said above, I'd like to play music from winamp along with the video. Of course, I can accomplish this by playing it through speakers and letting the mic pick it up, but I'd like to skip the mic entirely and use the soundcard output as the audio source.

Now, I thought I could accomplish this by going into camera audio setup and selecting my soundcard under "Primary audio capture device" instead of the logitech microphone. But doing that and playing music doesn't show any volume reading at all.

I know there has to be a way to get this going, but I really have no freaking clue what I'm doing regarding audio capture sources.

USB Headset with distorted audio

I just bought a USB Headset, but the audio through the earpiece is majorly distorted. Ive tried plugging it into my iBook and Laptop and it sounds fine. Whats my Desktop doing differently? Its one of these headsets, the kind that was included with the original SOCOM on the PS2 (infact thats EXACTLY what it is. I have discarded the game and kept the headset).

High pitched stuff sounds tinny, bassy stuff is completely distorted. The mic works fine (actually sounds really great). Ive tried all the settings i can think of but cant seem to improve it :(

I'm using a Dell XPS 600 if thats of any use.

Can I get Logitech SetPoint working on Windows 2003? I've tried installing SetPoint 3.01 both normally and in XP compatibility mode - it installs without errors but no executable shows up after installing. I can copy the SetPoint dlls and exes from an older XP install, but it won't let me configure mouse speed or any of the extra buttons.

These problems resemble the ones that people have when installing it on Vista:
Logitech SetPoint v3.0.107 (32 Bit) [NOTE: Installs without errors, but when you open it, there's only one tab showing the about and website links.]

I just need the two buttons on the side of my mouse working - if there's a better way (maybe capturing with AutoHotKey?) that could work too. Thanks.

BluetoothFilter: Help a friend connect her phone to her Wintel PC A friend of mine picked up a "Logitech Bluetooth 2.0 EDR" USB dongle (model C-UV35, product number 831406) from somebody at work who was cleaning house, hoping she'd be able to use it to connect her Nokia phone and bluetooth headset to her PC.

Google makes it pretty clear that this is the USB dongle used for a variety of Logitech cordless keyboards and mice, and my powerbook responds to it with the "identify your bluetooth keyboard" screen when I plug it in.

So, the question: Is there any way I can make this dongle talk to non-Logitech-keyboard USB devices?

If not, does anyone have reccomendations for a good quality PCI or USB bluetooth adapter that would? Google can give me plenty of products, but experiences/reviews would be helpful.

my round, global map, mouse pad freebie (oracle, circa 1994) is gross. can i wash it? or do you have a cool (new) round mousepad link? nothing for gaming, please, (icemat, func, aluminum, mouse rugs, please no.) and it must match a black logitech v200 wireless and a immaculate G3 iBook. i like dark colors cuz they don't show dirt.... i like round, well, cuz i do.

yeah, i'm picky, and i don't really want to design one a' la cafe press.

After adding new hardware to my computer setup, my "extra" mouse buttons and mouse wheel no longer work. Here's the situation: I have a Logitech Cordless MX keyboard and mouse hooked to my computer, the kind of mouse with the extra buttons for Back, Forward, etc. on it. It's worked fine for the years that I've had it.

Now this morning I've added a second desktop computer to the office and am using a OmniView Keyboard/Mouse passthrough from Belkin to control both computers with the one keyboard and mouse. The problem is that since plugging into the passthrough neither computer recognizes the Logitech mouse or its mouse wheel and extra buttons. The proper software is installed on both machines, but both computers only see a "regular" two button mouse.

Has anyone run into this problem before? How can I solve it? I need my extra buttons back!

Firefox vs. Trackball

Firefox dislikes my trackball. I have no idea how to fix this, and I'm hoping you do. Firefox version: 1.0.1

Computer: WinXp home, with SP2 installed.

Trackball: "Logitech Marble Mouse USB." It doesn't have a scroll wheel, but is set so that when I click both buttons simultaneously, I can rotate the ball to scroll all four ways through a document.

IE will allow this, as will Adobe Acrobat. In Photoshop I can zoom in and out of images with the same method. Firefox won't accept it. I've reinstalled the drivers that came with the trackball, and that didn't fix the problem. Google was not helpful.

Do I need to install a plugin? Is this an irreconcilable difference between the trackball and Firefox?

I have a logitech laser mouse. I bought it three years ago, and it's well-broken in. In fact, it's *so* well broken in that the 'feet' (for lack of a better term) on the bottom ... the little slick plastic things that it slides on ... have started to come off. The adhesive is all goopy. Any idea what I could do to either re-attach them or get new 'feet'? I'm afraid to try glue because I don't want to upset the 'level'ness of the mouse. I don't use a mousepad. I do a bit of graphic design, so I'm worried about affecting the way the mouse moves on the desk.

Quickcam with OSX?

At one time I had the URL for a website that provided a patch/driver that allowed you to use a Logitech USB Quickcam Messenger -- the ones with the good Christmas rebates? -- with OS X. But now I can't find it, whether via Google or Sourceforge or Google Groups (which appear to be down). Can anyone help? I'm about to belatedly give one to my sister for her Powerbook, and I'd like to be able to, you know, make it work.
