I have noticed that there seems to be a split between some banks/financial institutions who maintain complex security around their on-line account access and others who seem to have actively migrated towards a much simpler approach. Is there any evidence that the "simple" approach is either more or less secure than the "complex" one? [more inside]

How do I stop/view a domain login script? Work uses a domain login script with kixtart (kix32.exe), that maps shares, auto software installs, etc. Back with NT4 running novell, there was a nice checkbox to step through login scripts, but I have not seen anything like that in shareware/freeware.

OSX Security: I followed the instructions on this MacOSXhints article to setup my shiny new MacBook Pro to take a picture using the built-in iSight whenever there's a failed authentication attempt. I've noticed that every night at 9:53, there are multiple failed login attempts, but it's while I'm using the computer, so I end up with pictures of me. [more inside]

I tried turning off the welcome screen running Win XP Pro, but somehow managed to switch the default user to Administrator. So in order to get to my normal settings, I have to log out of that, then enter in my normal login name, and only then I'm back to normal. How can I switch it to the normal login (without the welcome screen)?

Why are many financial institutions moving to a two-step login process, where you enter your username on one page and then your password on the next? For instance, Vanguard and ING. Their rationale is just that it's "more secure", but that's not much of a reason.

This week my blog (languagehat.com) had an unprecedented flood of weird spam; as I was in the midst of deleting another chunk of it, I found myself locked out of my MT control panel (when I try accessing mt.cgi, I get "Invalid login"). Songdog, who helps me with stuff like this, posted a report at the Movable Type Community Forum, where you can find the horrid details; unfortunately, since I'm still using MT 2.63, there's not much in the way of support, and nobody's responded at the forum. If anybody here has suggestions, I'm all ears and deeply grateful.

I have a desktop that is located in a semi-public place. I have a bios password and a windows password on it. Sometimes I leave it logged out of windows so that I can leave in the middle of a project without restarting everything again. I was wondering how hard it would be to get my data? Short of stealing the actual hardware, is there a way to get past a bios password and access my data without me knowing? (From what I understand, resetting the cmos would clear the password so I would know if someone got in.) Also, is it possible to get in if I leave it logged out of windows with a password? How safe is my data?

I've got a old dell laptop which, just before I retired it, I loaded up with NT 2000 workstation from a legit cd I had. And I've forgotten whichever username/password combo I cleverly used. Furthermore I can't find the orginal cd anywhere so that I could just reload the OS.
Does anyone know of a way I can access this machine? I want to give it to my young daughter 'cause it's free.

When I try to log into hotmail, I get this error: "The operation timed out when attempting to contact..." This has been going on for a week. Yet my husband can get into his hotmail account just fine. I've tried logging in using Firefox and IE, but I get the error in both browsers. I've tried on my desktop and my laptop. Neither works. My husband can get into his hotmail using any browser and any PC. What gives? Does hotmail have a vendetta against me?

For some reason I can't stay logged into Flickr for very long. Do they have some function that kicks off users after thirty minutes or so? I find that if I click on other users' photostreams or want to add them as a contact (or add a photo my favorites, or do anything else that requires me to be logged in), I have to login again. Anyone else having this issue?

How do I gain access to a Windows 2000 computer when I've forgotten the password both to my account and the admin's?
I have physical access (it's here next to me) and it has a disk shared (can't remember if it's C: or a subdirectory, and can't look because it prompts for a password). I have other Linux and Windows machines available on the same network. However, it was kept up-to-date with patches until about 6 months ago.
