I'm in a new place, and my daughter just pushed the privacy lock on the bathroom door before closing it (she is outside the bathroom, thankfully). With most of these knobs you can just push something through the hole to pop it, but that is not working. There are no keys over the doorframe. There are no exposed screws on this side of the knob. The door hinges are on the other side of the door. Please help! [more inside]
My neighbor and I share a garage door that we'd like to keep secure. Without walking around the block, it's easier for me to open it from within and easier for him to open it from without. Currently, the door is locked with a latch and a padlock on the outside, but I'd like to be able to unlock it from the inside too. Is there a solution?
My Palmy U lock, with one of those simple circular keys, is stuck. How do I open it? [more inside]
Howdy MeFites! The lock on my front door is apparently suffering from separation anxiety; it refuses to release the key. The key still functions properly in all other ways but when I attempt to remove it from the lock it stubbornly stays put. While I empathize with their situation, I cannot leave for work without locking my front door and taking the key with me. Any recommendations for fixing besides "call a locksmith"? [more inside]
I'm moving and will be living out of a suitcase for a while... and I think I packed the suitcase lock key in a moving box *after* locking the suitcase (moving boxes are now on the road and inaccessible). How can I open the suitcase today? [more inside]
We've got some computers that run monitoring software that we'd like to remain visible. We also want to lock these computers so they require a password if someone wants to use the keyboard/mouse. Turning on the lock screen satisfies the second requirement, but not the first. Turning it off satisfies the first, but not the second... Does anyone know of anything that will do what we want?
Maintenance workers used my outside water spigot to fill up the gargantuan tanks on their trucks. No surprise, my water bill sky rocketed. I bought and installed a spigot lock which worked like a charm for about a year. Now, with warm weather and the need to water fast approaching, I can't get the damn thing off! [more inside]

I know YANML but if someone locks their bike to my gate, at what point am I allowed to remove it? Must there be a posted sign? And, then, am I responsible for the removed bike if it is damaged in the process? Do I have to hold it for the owner? If I do, can I charge $100 a day for this service? What exactly are the laws governing this kind of situation? If location is relevant, I'm in NYC. [more inside]
I have a bike lock that uses letters instead of numbers for the combination. I locked up my bike a month ago and, of course, have forgotten the code word. I'd love metafilter's help to create a list of dictionary words that are possible from the letters on the lock so I can try them all until it opens. There are four wheels, each with 10 letters. The only person who has a key to my house is out of town, so I can't even call a locksmith and have him let in. How can I get out of my bedroom? The door knob is the kind with screws only on the exterior. I've tried to slide a credit card in, but that did not yield results. Anyone have any advice to help me get out of my room?
